ObjectiveThe limited existing asthma control questionnaires that are available for children 5 years of age or younger in China mostly assess only the impairment domain of asthma control. Here, the English version of the Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) was translated into Chinese and validated for its application in asthma control in preschool children.DesignProspective validation study.Setting and participantsA total of 321 Chinese preschool children suffering from asthma completed the study from December 2017 to February 2018.MethodThe TRACK translation into Chinese employed the translation and back translation technique. The caregivers of the preschool children with asthma symptoms completed TRACK during two clinical visits over 4–6 weeks. Moreover, the physicians completed a Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)-based asthma control survey at both visits. The utility of TRACK for assessing the change in asthma control status and its reliability and discriminant validity were evaluated.ResultsThe Chinese version of TRACK showed internal consistency reliability values of 0.63 and 0.71 at each visit, respectively (Cronbach’s α). The test–retest reliability was 0.62 for individuals whose GINA-based assessment results were the same at both visits (n=206). The TRACK scores for the children in the various asthma control categories were significantly different (p<0.001). Children recommended for increased treatment by the physicians had lower TRACK scores than those recommended for no change in treatment or decreased treatment (p<0.001).ConclusionThe study verifies the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of TRACK. Changes in the TRACK scores effectively reflected the level of asthma control in preschool children and guided further treatment strategies.Trial registration numberNCT02649803

Universal screening of social–emotional deficits in preschool children is a promising avenue for detecting children in need of early intervention. Due to the enormity of this task, it is vital that the instruments used in universal screening be brief, inexpensive, and capable of accurately measuring social–emotional development. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social–Emotional (ASQ:SE) fulfills these requirements, but has been established only as a parent-report instrument, which makes it difficult to assess preschool-based child behavior and reporter bias. The current study examined the reliability and validity of the ASQ:SE in a sample of 443 preschool children and their teachers. Overall, the teacher-report ASQ:SE produced promising findings, including adequate internal consistency reliability (α = .73-.74) and strong concurrent validity. Further studies should include discriminant validity analyses, and more representative samples to allow for generalization of results.

Background and Purpose: Teamwork is an essential component of hospital nursing quality and safety. The purpose of this study is to test the validity and reliability of the Brief TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Perception Questionnaire (Brief T-TPQ). Methods: The 20-item questionnaire was completed electronically by a sample (N = 456) of hospital bedside nurses and tested for reliability and validity. Results: The survey demonstrated internal consistency reliability of .83–.94 with a total survey reliability of .93. A hierarchical relationship three factor subscale structure was confirmed, explaining 64% of the variance and acceptable factor loadings. A secondary five-factor structure revealed statistically and conceptually coherent skills and behaviors sub-subscales. Discriminant validity was demonstrated with self-esteem and control over practice. Conclusions: The 20-item Brief T-TPQ is a valid and reliable survey to measure hierarchical teamwork relationships as well as teamwork skills and behaviors.

Abstract. Varimax rotated principal component scores (VRPCS) have previously been offered as a possible solution to the non-orthogonality of scores for the Big Five factors. However, few researchers have examined the reliability and validity of VRPCS. To address this gap, we use a lab study and a field study to investigate whether using VRPCS increase orthogonality, reliability, and criterion-related validity. Compared to the traditional unit-weighting scoring method, the use of VRPCS enhanced the reliability and discriminant validity of the Big Five factors, although there was little improvement in criterion-related validity. Results are discussed in terms of the benefit of using VRPCS instead of traditional unit-weighted sum scores.

Objectives.To (1) describe participation in decision-making as a systems-level property of complex adaptive systems and (2) present empirical evidence of reliability and validity of a corresponding measure.Method.Study 1 was a mail survey of a single respondent (administrators or directors of nursing) in each of 197 nursing homes. Study 2 was a field study using random, proportionally stratified sampling procedure that included 195 organizations with 3,968 respondents.Analysis.In Study 1, we analyzed the data to reduce the number of scale items and establish initial reliability and validity. In Study 2, we strengthened the psychometric test using a large sample.Results.Results demonstrated validity and reliability of the participation in decision-making instrument (PDMI) while measuring participation of workers in two distinct job categories (RNs and CNAs). We established reliability at the organizational level aggregated items scores. We established validity of the multidimensional properties using convergent and discriminant validity and confirmatory factor analysis.Conclusions.Participation in decision making, when modeled as a systems-level property of organization, has multiple dimensions and is more complex than is being traditionally measured. Managers can use this model to form decision teams that maximize the depth and breadth of expertise needed and to foster connection among them.

Introduction: Oral health problems are more chronic and severe. Various instruments have been developed to measure Oral Health Quality of Life. General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) is a well-established, frequently used questionnaire for measuring OHQoL for geriatric and general population.  Objectives: The objective of the study is to translate the GOHAI in Nepali and to assess its reliability and validity.  Methodology: This study was conducted on the patient attending department of Prosthodontics, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences from March 2017 to February 2018. The GOHAI questionnaire was translated into Nepali version from English and back translated. Nepali version of GOHAI was pilot tested on 50 adult population to test the comprehensibility of the questionnaire, and then required alterations were done. The final Nepali version of GOHAI was administered to 301 (aged 20-70 years) adults along with the self-informed questionnaire. Clinical examination was done on the same day by a single examiner using World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Reliability was analyzed using test-retest, cronbach alpha and split half reliability. For validity, discriminant validity and construct validity were calculated.  Results: Cronbach's alpha was 0.749, which indicated good overall internal consistency and homogeneity. For test-retest, the spearman's rho correlation coefficient between visits ranged from 0.641-0.952 for all twelve questionnaires indicating strong correlation with p-value< 0.001.  Conclusion Nepali version of the GOHAI exhibited acceptable reliability and validity in the people of Kathmandu valley, Nepal. This instrument can be applied to evaluate OHRQoL of different age groups as it was carried out in all the age groups.

In this study a Chinese version of the Situational Self-Awareness Scale (SSAS; Govern & Marsch, 2001) was developed and tested for validity and reliability. Participants were 1,244 undergraduate students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and other statistical methods yielded results indicating a good correlation of items in the Chinese (C-SSAS) and English version of the scale. When private self-awareness was assessed in a private setting the score of participants was significantly greater and likewise the public self-awareness scores were higher when the scale was completed in a public setting. Test-retest reliability was significant across situations and time. The reallocation of one item to public self-awareness in the C-SSAS from private in the SSAS was indicative of differences between Eastern and Western cultures and this is discussed. In general, the results indicated that the Chinese version of the SSAS has good reliability and validity. The scale should, therefore, be suitable as a reference to develop scales for evaluating personnel working in specific occupations.

Background: To translate and assess the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of Tinnitus Handycap Inventory (THI) as an psychometric instrument for evaluating the quality of life in tinnitus patients. This instrument will support the clinicians to determine the appropriate tinnitus management for them.Methods: A cross-sectional psychometric validation study was performed to assess the internal consistency, reliability and validity of the Indonesian version of THI in 50 subjective tinnitus patients at ENT outpatient clinic of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital between May-August 2010. 25 question items of original THI were translated, back-translated and validated using the transcultural validation by WHO.Results: The validity test demonstrated a significant correlation in the emotional and the catastrophic scale whilst there was no significant correlation in the functional scale for item F2 and particularly for item F15. Nevertheless, the validity test on the functional scale showed a good result. This study also showed high internal consistency and reliability for the total scale (Cronbach-α = 0.91)Conclusion: The evaluation result indicated that the reliability of adapted Indonesian version of the THI in our study is relatively high and could be applied in clinical examination or further otolaryngology study by both specialists and general physicians.

The purpose of this study was to translate the Nursing Stress Scale (NSS) into Chinese and test its reliability and validity among Chinese nurses in Taiwan. Potential participants were asked to self-administer a Chinese version of the NSS. The agreement estimation was used to determine the equivalence of the meaning between the Chinese and original English versions and was rated by five bilingual nurses as 92% accurate for the 34 items. The test-retest reliability for the NSS at 2 weeks was .71 (p = .022, n = 10). Internal consistency reliability and factor analysis were tested with 770 nurses from 65 inpatient units at a medical center in Taiwan. The internal consistency of the Chinese version of the NSS for an overall coefficient alpha is .91 for the total scale, and ranges from .67 to .79 for the subscales. The Chinese version of the NSS explains 53.77% of the variance in work stressors among Chinese nurses in Taiwan. Overall, the Chinese version of the NSS is internally consistent but may not be stable over 2 weeks. There was adequate evidence of the reliability and validity of the NSS-Chinese as an instrument appropriate to measure work stress among Chinese nurses. The translated NSS could be a useful tool for examining the frequency and major sources of stress experienced by Chinese nurses in hospital settings, and for the development of appropriate interventions for stress reduction.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties in terms of validity and reliability of the scale Self-efficacy and their child's level of asthma control: Brazilian version. Method: Methodological study in which 216 parents/guardians of children with asthma participated. A construct validation (factor analysis and test of hypothesis by comparison of contrasted groups) and an analysis of reliability in terms of homogeneity (Cronbach's alpha) and stability (test-retest) were carried out. Results: Exploratory factor analysis proved suitable for the Brazilian version of the scale (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkim index of 0.879 and Bartlett's sphericity with p < 0.001). The correlation matrix in factor analysis suggested the removal of item 7 from the scale. Cronbach's alpha of the final scale, with 16 items, was 0.92. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of Self-efficacy and their child's level of asthma control presented psychometric properties that confirmed its validity and reliability.
