This chapter presents a short and fairly standard history of the First Command of Capital (Primeiro Comando da Capital - PCC) and the individuals and spaces that will follow in successive chapters. Some official characteristics of the penitentiary system in São Paulo, Brazil, are intertwined with the everyday operation of the prisons and its informal (although sometimes official) aspects. This chapter introduces the way inmates rules are taught and learned by the prisoners, in order to absorb everyday practices and come to understand the importance and the central characteristics of the PCC. Biondi focuses on how to practice equality and humility without confusing it with weakness, and how it is coherent with the ideals of the PCC. The knowledge produced in these practices constitutes trul theories of prison life, and the specialists in these theories are invited to join the PCC.

This document compares two videos that date from the same year (1969) and provide a basis for discussion about two different paradigms of urban thinking present in the 1960’s: an interview with Jane Jacobs on the show "The way it is", on Canadian broadcaster CBC, in which she disputes the plans to build Spadina Expressway in Toronto, and a presentation by the then Mayor of São Paulo, Paulo Salim Maluf, on the plans to build Elevado Presidente Costa e Silva (currently named Elevado João Goulart, nicknamed Minhocão [the Big Worm]), an elevated expressway in São Paulo. By confronting the videos, the antagonism of the discourses regarding the role of road infrastructure, the value given to the urban environment, and the idea of quality of urban life becomes clear. The materials are also an illustration of two different outcomes: the halting of the Spadina Expressway works in Toronto and the completion of the Minhocão works in São Paulo.

AbstractIn January 2020 China reported to the World Health Organization an outbreak of pneumonia of undetermined origin in the city of Wuhan, Hubei. In January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Interest (PHEI).ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to assess the impact of a COVID-19 epidemic in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil.MethodsWe used a generalized SEIR (Susceptibles, Exposed, Infectious, Recovered) model, with additional Hospitalized variables (SEIHR model) and age-stratified structure to analyze the expected time evolution during the onset of the epidemic in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. The model allows to determine the evolution of the number of cases, the number of patients admitted to hospitals and deaths caused by COVID-19. In order to investigate the sensibility of our results with respect to parameter estimation errors we performed Monte Carlo analysis with 100 000 simulations by sampling parameter values from an uniform distribution in the confidence interval.ResultsWe estimate 1 368 (IQR: 880, 2 407) cases, 301 (22%) in older people (≥60 years), 81 (50, 143) hospitalizations, and 14 (9, 26) deaths in the first 30 days, and 38 583 (IQR: 16 698, 113, 163) cases, 8 427 (21.8%) in older people (≥60 years), 2181 (914, 6392) hospitalizations, and 397(166, 1205) deaths in the first 60 days.LimitationsWe supposed a constant transmission probability Pc among different age-groups, and that every severe and critic case will be hospitalized, as well as that the detection capacity in all the primary healthcare services does not change during the outbreak.ConclusionSupposing the reported parameters in the literature apply in the city of São Paulo, our study shows that it is expected that the impact of a COVID-19 outbreak will be important, requiring special planning from the authorities. This is the first study for a major metropolitan center in the south hemisphere, and we believe it can provide policy makers with a prognosis of the burden of the pandemic not only in Brazil, but also in other tropical zones, allowing to estimate total cases, hospitalization and deaths, in support to the management of the public health emergence caused by COVID-19.

This article aims to analyse the polysemy as an interpreting of conflicts between social voices, and it is based on the dialogical theory of discourse and on the enunciation theory of Benveniste. To do so, it is verified the way polysemy marks the confrontation between social voices: a) as an oppressive designation given by dominant groups to the oppressed people and as a strategy of revaluation of the oppressive words by oppressed groups and b) as a critical designation of the dominated groups to their oppressors and as an attempt of the dominant group to revaluate/neutralize the critical dominations given to it by the oppressed groups. Then, it is observed a contemporary example of the mentioned phenomenon: the word revaluation of “balbúrdia”, in 2019, used by Brazilian university students, in response to a polemic statement of Abraham Weintraub, Minister of Education of the current management. It is found that the social contradictions do not enclose in one or other statement, they should be observed through the dialogue stablished between different social voices. This paper presents and discusses three case studies of scientific organizations involving geology, based on successive institutional models of geological surveys, namely: the "Geological Commission of Brazil", the "Geographical and Geological Commission of São Paulo", and the "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of Brazil". The issues linked to the exploitation of the land opened the way to the development of geological sciences in Brazil. Contrary to what one might expect, in view of Brazil's considerable mineral resources, the institutionalization of geology was linked more directly to agriculture rather than to mining. It was the interests of agriculture, especially those related to coffee planting, that influenced the direction of research and the results obtained.

DIY electronic music parties in São Paulo are deeply immersive, corporeal and sensorial. In March 2020, due to the pandemic, the parties stopped, and the scene gradually moved online manifesting itself on a new type of canvas. However, the digital manifestations of the virtual scene lost their performative and multisensorial appeal. By using multimodal elicitation methods (photos, videos, audio tracks, internet memories) this article is exploring the triggered or involuntary memory of embodied and sensorial affects that are being recalled and missed by the “clubbers.” The article intends to exhibit autoethnographic memories of party participation while problematizing the way in which the memory of this missed intense experience comes from a regular attendance to electronic music gatherings and its relationship with the complex feeling of “saudade.”

This article deals with the symbolic experiences of urban participants of the União do Vegetal (UDV), in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Through the analysis of participant speech, it seeks to identify the discursive axes of disciples of the UDV. Subjects’ experiences under the effects of the tea are strongly liminal, and frequently act as mediators through which the subject articulates elements of his life with those of the UDV worldview, experiencing them as a single reality. This experience is labeled by the author as encompassment in the force of the burracheira (the UDV designation for the ‘strange force’ that accompanies ingestion of the tea). As elaborated by Brissac, this idea denotes both the subjective experience of being ‘swept up’ by the effects of ayahuasca, and the way in which the UDV as a symbolic system draws to itself elements of other religious practices.
