Postexercise serum hepcidin response to repeated sprint exercise under normoxic and hypoxic conditions

We determined the effects of repeated sprint exercise under normoxic and hypoxic conditions on serum hepcidin levels. Ten male athletes (age: 20.9 ± 0.3 years; height: 175.7 ± 6.0 cm; weight: 67.3 ± 6.3 kg) performed 2 exercise trials under normoxic (NOR; fraction of inspiratory oxygen (FiO2): 20.9%) or hypoxic conditions (HYPO; FiO2: 14.5%). The exercise consisted of 3 sets of 5 × 6 s of maximal pedaling (30-s rest periods between sprints, 10-min rest periods between sets). Blood samples were collected before exercise, immediately after exercise, and 1 and 3 h after exercise. Serum hepcidin levels were significantly elevated after exercise in both trials (both P < 0.01), with no significant difference between the trials. The postexercise blood lactate levels were significantly higher in the HYPO than the NOR (P < 0.05). Both trials caused similar increases in plasma interleukin-6 and serum iron levels (P < 0.001), with no significant difference between the trials. A significant interaction (trial × time) was apparent in terms of serum erythropoietin (EPO) levels (P = 0.003). The EPO level was significantly higher in the HYPO than the NOR at 3 h after exercise (P < 0.05). In conclusion, repeated sprint exercise significantly increased serum hepcidin levels to similar extent in 2 trials, despite differences in the inspired oxygen concentrations during both the exercise and the 3-h postexercise period.

This study was conducted to investigate the sub-scales of sports instructions of elite athletes with hearing impairment or hearing loss due to different reasons. A total of 173 hearing-impaired athletes constituted of 54 female and 119 male athletes who are active national team athletes in the age range of 15-25 years. The study was conducted based on Self Determination Theory of Deci and Ryan [9] and on the developed Sports Motivation Scale, Pelletier et al. [24] Kazak [18] applied the validity and reliability of the scale for Turkish athletes. Accordingly, since the p_values calculated for the inner motivation sub-scale and its sub-scales are less than the value of α = .05 which is taken as the level of significance, there is a statistically significant difference in the average scores of the hearing-impaired athletes in their internal motivations and sub-scales. According to gender and educational status, there was no difference in the motivation of the hearing-impaired athletes. According to the age variable, it was seen that older athletes had more external connections. Considering the general motivation scores, the athletes in tennis and swimming were less motivated than others. Elite hearing-impaired athletes are affected by both internal and external impulses. However, internal motivation scores are higher than the external. Internal motivation scores are seen as the lowest in the branch swimming area.

This systematic review with a meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effects of small-sided games (SSGs)-based interventions with the effects of running-based high-intensity interval training (HIIT) interventions on soccer players’ repeated sprint ability (RSA). The data sources utilized were Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and PubMed. The study eligibility criteria were: (i) parallel studies (SSG-based programs vs. running-based HIIT) conducted in soccer players with no restrictions on age, sex, or competitive level; (ii) isolated intervention programs (i.e., only SSG vs. only running-based HIIT as individual forms) with no restrictions on duration; (iii) a pre–post outcome for RSA; (iv) original, full-text, peer-reviewed articles written in English. An electronic search yielded 513 articles, four of which were included in the present study. There was no significant difference between the effects of SSG-based and HIIT-based training interventions on RSA (effect size (ES) = 0.30; p = 0.181). The within-group analysis revealed no significant effect of SSG-based training interventions (ES = −0.23; p = 0.697) or HIIT-based training interventions (ES = 0.08; p = 0.899) on RSA. The meta-comparison revealed that neither SSGs nor HIIT-based interventions were effective in improving RSA in soccer players, and no differences were found between the two types of training. This suggests that complementary training may be performed to improve the effects of SSGs and HIIT. It also suggests that different forms of HIIT can be used because of the range of opportunities that such training affords.

Abstract Hypoxia is known to reduce the expression of hepcidin, the master regulator of iron metabolism. However, it is not clear whether this response is primarily related to increased erythropoiesis driven by hypoxically stimulated erythropoietin or to a more direct effect of hypoxia on hepcidin expression. The germline loss-of-function VHLR200W mutation is common in Chuvashia, Russia, and also occurs elsewhere. VHLR200W homozygotes have elevated hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) and HIF-2α levels, increased red cell mass, propensity to thrombosis, and early mortality. Ninety VHLR200W homozygotes and 52 controls with normal VHL alleles from Chuvashia, Russia, were studied under basal circumstances. In univariate analyses, serum hepcidin concentration was correlated positively with serum ferritin concentration and negatively with homozygosity for VHLR200W. After adjustment for serum erythropoietin and ferritin concentrations by multiple linear regression, the geometric mean (95% confidence interval of mean) hepcidin concentration was 8.1 (6.3-10.5) ng/mL in VHLR200W homozygotes versus 26.9 (18.6-38.0) ng/mL in controls (P < .001). In contrast, a significant independent relationship of serum erythropoietin, hemoglobin, or RBC count with hepcidin was not observed. In conclusion, up-regulation of the hypoxic response leads to decreased expression of hepcidin that may be independent of increased erythropoietin levels and increased RBC counts.

To determine pulmonary function abnormalities in patients with neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), we measured distribution of ventilation by nitrogen washout, minute and tidal volume, and arterial and alveolar gases in three groups of ten preterm infants with similar birth weights (mean = 1,340 g) and gestational ages (mean = 30.3 weeks). Infants in group A were never artificially ventilated, those in group B were ventilated but had no subsequent BPD, and those in group C were ventilated and developed BPD. Infants with BPD had severe maldistribution of ventilation (pulmonary clearance delay 223% versus 47% and 60% for groups A and B). They had decreased tidal volumes (5.3 ml versus 7.0 and 6.2 ml) and higher respiratory rates (60/min versus 47 and 48) but similar minute volumes. They also had increased Paco2 (53.6 torr versus 41.9 and 43.4 torr) and increased arterial-alveolar carbon dioxide gradients (6.8 torr versus 3.1 and 1.8 torr). There was no statistically significant difference between groups B and C for the time spent in fractional inspired oxygen &gt; 0.40 and &gt; 0.60, or the time ventilated or intubated, or the incidence of patent ductus arteriosus. Early pulmonary interstitial emphysema was much more common in the infants who subsequently developed BPD (eight of ten versus two of ten, P &lt; .01).

Six subjects rode a bicycle ergometer on three occasions breathing 17, 21, or 60% oxygen. In addition to rest and recovery periods, each subject worked for 10 min at 55% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and then to exhaustion at approximately 90% VO2 max. Performance time, inspired and expired gas fractions, ventilation, and arterialized venous oxygen tension (PO2), carbon dioxide tension (PCO2), lactate, and pH were measured. VO2, carbon dioxide output, [H+]a, and [HCO3-]a were calculated. Performance times were longer in hyperoxia than in normoxia or hypoxia. However, VO2 was not different at exhaustion in normoxia compared with hypoxia or hyperoxia. During exercise, hypoxia was associated with increased lactate levels and decreased [H+]a, PCO2, and [HCO3-]a. The opposite trends were generally associated with hyperoxia. At exhaustion, [H+]a was not different under any inspired oxygen fraction. These results support the contention that oxygen is not limiting for exercise of this intensity and duration. The results also suggest that [H+] is a possible limiting factor and that the effect of oxygen on performance is perhaps related to control of [H+].
