Growth and survival of ectomycorrhizal and ectendomycorrhizal seedlings of Pinus resinosa on iron tailings

The survival and growth of ectomycorrhizal and ectendomycorrhizal red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) seedlings transplanted from a nursery onto iron tailings were examined. Seedlings were inoculated with the E-strain fungus BDG-58 (Complexipes sp. Walker emend. Yang & Korf), Phialophora finlandia Wang & Wilcox, Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch, or Suillus subluteus (Peck) Snell ex Slipp & Snell. The first two isolates are ectendomycorrhizal fungi and the last two ectomycorrhizal fungi. Two-year field data on the tailings indicated a mycorrhizal treatment effect only in root-collar diameter at the end of the first growing season. The mycorrhizal treatments had a higher survival rate than the controls, with BDG-58 and Ph. finlandia seedlings having the greatest percent survival. Results from freehand root sections indicated that ectendomycorrhizae persisted in young roots of 4-year-old red pine seedlings that had been transplanted 2 years previously.

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is an economically important source of timber in Mongolia and has been widely used in reforestation programs. In this study, we investigated the effects of mycorrhizas on the growth of pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings. Inoculation with ectomycorrhizas and endomycorrhizas increased the height, root length, and root collar diameter of the pine seedlings compared to the non-inoculated seedlings. Furthermore, the results of the study showed that the percentage survival rate is higher in mycorrhizal inoculated pine seedlings than control seedlings. These results demonstrated that inoculation could effectively form ectomycorrhizas with pine seedlings and promote its growth, which can be used to restore Mongolian forest. The ability of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Hebelomaarenosa Burdsall, MacFall & Albers to enhance growth and survival of container-grown red pine seedlings (Pinusresinosa Ait.) was investigated. Shoot height of H. arenosa inoculated seedlings was 28% greater than noninoculated seedlings when grown without fertilizer applications. Eight-week-old seedlings transplanted into a Ball mix (a mixture of peat, bark, and perlite) containing up to a 1:64 dilution of fungal inoculum had significantly greater root dry weights and root/shoot ratios than noninoculated seedlings when grown for an additional 14 weeks. Under experimental greenhouse conditions, root and shoot dry weights of container-grown red pine seedlings that had been directly seeded into Ball mix containing up to a 1:256 dilution of fungal inoculum were significantly greater than weights measured for noninoculated seedlings. Root and shoot dry weights of container-grown seedlings seeded directly into a 1:5 dilution of H. arenosa inoculum and Ball mix and then grown under commercial production conditions were greater than comparable weights of noninoculated seedlings. Hebelomaarenosa inoculation significantly increased seedling survival following outplanting, but did not increase seedling growth. Hebelomaarenosa did not colonize roots growing from the root plug into the surrounding soil.

Abstract Dazomet, metam sodium, and oxamyl were evaluated for nematode control and production of loblolly pine seedlings in a field infested by a Longidorus sp. Fumigation with dazomet or metam sodium reduced population densities of Longidorus to nondetectable levels early in the growing season but population densities subsequently increased to levels found in untreated control plots by the end of the growing season. Oxamyl had no effect on Longidorus population densities. Seedlings in dazomet-treated plots had significantly greater root and shoot weights than seedlings in control and oxamyl-treated plots within 6 weeks of seed sowing. At the end of the growing season, seedlings in the control and oxamyl plots were very stunted with poorly developed root systems. Seedling shoot length and root collar diameter in dazomet-treated plots averaged 27.4 cm and 4.0 mm, respectively, but in nonfumigated control plots these variables averaged 10.5 and 2.5 mm, respectively. Although dazomet and metam sodium were effective in reducing Longidorus populations for the first seedling crop after fumigation, production of a second crop without additional treatment would be inadvisable based on the increased population of Longidorus by the end of the first growing season. Most commonly used morphological attributes were correlated with nutrient concentration in order to standardize quality assessment of two-year-old hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.) seedlings. Diameter has proven to be the best single morphological indicator of seedling quality given its strong positive correlation with all other observed morphological attributes. Seedling dry mass (shoot and root dry mass) and Dickson Quality Index can be considered the most comprehensive indicators of hop hornbeam seedling quality. However, the measuring of mass is destructive and requires a certain amount of time. The absence of strong correlations between physiological and morphological attributes of two-year old seedlings of hop hornbeam suggests the need for further research. The only significant correlation between physiological and morphological attributes (weak and positive) was recorded between the potassium concentration in root and root collar diameter after the second growing season.

The fertilizers, Mg at a rate of 100 lbs/acre and K at 200 lbs/acre, were applied around each of 15 red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) to promote increased growth in a 20-year-old plantation which had failed to fulfil growth expectations. Successive measurements of diameter and height showed that the fertilizers stimulated diameter significantly after the second growing season, but height only after the third growing season. Beneficial effect of fertilizer applications on diameter and height persisted, and the differences in diameter and height between treated and untreated trees at the end of the seventh growing season was equivalent to two years' current growth.

Loblolly (Pinustaeda L.), longleaf (Pinuspalustris Mill.), shortleaf (Pinusechinata Mill.), and eastern white (Pinusstrobus L.) pine seedlings inoculated with Pisolithustinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch (Pt) were raised in a greenhouse in containers painted with latex paint containing 50 g/L cupric carbonate (CuCO3). To determine the effects of CuCO3 on root development and morphology, seedlings were sampled in the middle and at the end of the test. The treatment was effective in preventing most first-order laterals of all species from growing down the container wall, yet it had no significant effect on seedling height, root-collar diameter, or top and root fresh weight. Cupric carbonate had little effect on ectomycorrhizal formation on loblolly and shortleaf seedlings, but significantly increased it on longleaf seedlings and decreased it on eastern white seedlings. Using CuCO3 to alter root morphology of containerized southern pine seedlings inoculated with Pt has the potential for developing stock that will grow long laterals near the soil surface for anchorage and increase the rate of spread of Pt ectomycorrhizae from the plug to new roots after planting.

Differences in survival and growth of black and white spruce seedlings planted on boreal mixedwood sites were tested for stock types (transplant versus container), site preparation (Donaren disc trenching versus no trenching), and plantation types (open versus sheltered) in southeastern Manitoba after eight or nine growing seasons. Mortality of open plantation (32.3%) and container stock (32.5%) were significantly higher than sheltered plantation (23.7%) and transplant stock (22.8%), respectively. Donaren trenching slightly reduced the mortality of black spruce but significantly increased the mortality of white spruce. Seedlings of container stock (110 cm) were significantly shorter than transplant stock (157 cm). Significant difference in height was found between open and sheltered plantations for black spruce but not for white spruce. Root collar diameter of container stock (15.6 mm) was significantly smaller than transplant stock (23.1 mm). Root collar diameter in sheltered plantations was significantly larger than that in open plantations for black spruce but not for white spruce. Black spruce open plantation had significantly smaller volume (97 cm3) compare to black spruce sheltered (210 cm3) and white spruce open (175 cm3) and sheltered (229 cm3) plantations. White spruce open plantations also had smaller volume than white spruce sheltered plantations. Container stock had smaller volume (89 cm3) than transplant stock (267 cm3). For transplant stock, strip plantations had a significantly higher volume (329 cm3) than open plantations (204 cm3). Based on above results, we recommend that (1) transplant stock should be used, (2) sheltered plantation site preparation should be used on boreal mixedwood sites, and (3) Donaren disc-trenching is not necessary for planting white spruce. During two consecutive years, 2 + 0 bareroot red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) seedlings were planted in the spring in clearcuts and in old fields. In the fall of the same years, treeshelters 120 cm in height were installed to protect plants from browsing. Tree growth and survival were assessed over a four-year period following outplanting. Sheltered trees were then significantly higher than the controls, and their root collar diameters were larger, on average. Trees planted on clearcuts were taller than those on old fields. Four years after outplanting, sheltered trees had a slightly better survival rate than the controls with overall survival rate exceeding 97% for both planting years. We tested the influence of exogenous application of brassinosteroids (BRs) on survival, growth and biomass production of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings. BRs are natural substances, supposedly having many positive effects on plants such as improving growth, stress tolerance, survival and biomass production. One part of the seedlings was treated with a low concentration of synthetically prepared BRs and the other part was designated as the control without any treatment. Mortality, height and root collar diameter were measured in two subsequent years, the root-to-shoot ratio of biomass volume was determined in autumn 2013. The application of BRs significantly slowed height and radial growth of pine. The height increment of the BRs-treated seedlings was lower by 11% between 2012 and 2013 compared to the control. The increment in root collar diameter (2012–2013) in the BRs-treated seedlings was lower by 13% than in the control. The BRs-treated pines also experienced a significantly higher mortality compared to the control. No significant influence of BRs on biomass production was found.
