An experimental program, exploratory in nature, has been carried out to investigate the effect of interface gap on the load–slip behaviour of joints fabricated with multiple nails. In total, 320 joint specimens have been tested. Modification factors are developed to account for the effects of number of nails and interface gap on the overall load-carrying capacity of joints with multiple nails. The current practice for the design of nailed joints is that a joint fastened together with multiple nails in a row, regardless of the interface characteristics of that joint, carries lateral load equal to the product of the lateral-load capacity of the corresponding joint with a single nail and the number of nails in a row of the joint. The findings of this investigation indicate this practice to be somewhat of an overestimation of the overall capacity of the joint. Key words: design, interface gap, interface friction, joint slip, loads (forces), modification factors, multiple fasteners, nailed joints, stiffness, structural engineering, tests, timber construction.

This paper illustrates the results of experimental and analytical investigation carried out on masonry panels built by grey clay brick (GCB) from the Lingnan Region, China, reinforced with externally bonded Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) system. The experimental program involves diagonal compression tests on two unreinforced and two double side reinforced panels. The main outcomes of the experimental tests include load-displacement response, stiffness, load capacity and failure mechanism. The results show that the contribution of the strengthening system to the increase of the load carrying capacity and ductility. Finally, analytical model is proposed and compared with experimental results.

Latticed built-up columns are applied more extensively than solid columns in structural engineering because of their excellent load-carrying capacity and light weight. Studies on the bearing capacity of latticed columns, particularly multiple-legged latticed columns, need to be conducted in detail. In this investigation, seven four-legged latticed column specimens of different bar sections, bar distributions and loading eccentricities under compressive loads were subjected to experimental tests. The initial geometric imperfections of the legs and bars were measured and introduced into the FE numerical method. The experimental results were then compared with those of Geometrical and Material Non-Linear Analysis with Imperfection in ABAQUS software. The combined data indicate that the bar section, bar distribution and loading eccentricity significantly influenced the ultimate strength of four-legged latticed columns, producing maximum variations of 105.67%, 65.7% and 48.48%, respectively. This investigation demonstrates the influence of lacing bars and improves the results obtained from FE numerical analytical techniques.

In this research, an experimental study is conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of high strength reinforced concrete corbels externally bonded with CFRP fabric sheets and Plates with different patterns taking into account the effect of adopted variables in enhancing the ultimate strength; the effect of shear span to effective depth (a/d), configuration, type and amount of bonding. Eleven high strength reinforced corbels were cast and tested under vertical loads. Test results showed there was an improvement in the behavior and load carrying capacity of all strengthened corbels. An increasing in the ultimate strength of strengthened corbel by inclined CFRP strips reached to (92.1%) while the increasing reached to (84.21%) for using one horizontal CFRP Plates compared to un-strengthened reference specimen. Also, it can be conducted that the increase of (a/d) ratio from (0.6 to 0.8) resulted in decreasing by 21.05% in ultimate load capacity of corbels and from (0.4 to 0.6) by 31.25% and 58.69% in cracking and ultimate loads respectively Using CFRP .

This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental investigation into the performance of a short multi-grooved bearing subjected to a range of static and alternating loads. Lubricating oil was supplied, at pressures of up to 2000 lb/in2, to capillary type restrictors connected to 10 closed-end axial grooves in the bearing. The bearing had a length/diameter ratio of 1/3 and operated with a journal speed and load frequency of 327 c/min. Measured load capacity, stiffness, and flow characteristics indicate that bearings of this type have a significant load-carrying capacity at zero journal speed and that the load capacity is increased by journal rotation. A feature of the journal behaviour under alternating loads is the movement of the journal centre along a straight line coincident with the load plane. The extensive oil film pressure surveys indicate for the first time the pressure distribution within narrow hydrostatic bearings and provide a basis for a realistic theoretical analysis of this type of bearing.

High-speed rotating system development has drawn considerable attention of the researchers, in the recent past. Foil bearings are one of the major contenders for such applications, particularly for high speed and low load rotating systems. In foil bearings, process fluid or air is used as the working medium and no additional lubricant is required. It is known from the published literature that the load capacity of foil bearings depend on the operating speed, viscosity of the medium, clearance, and stiffness of the foil apart from the geometric dimensions of the bearing. In case of foil bearing with given dimensions, clearance governs the magnitude of pressure developed, whereas stiffness dictates the change in radial clearance under the generated pressure. This article deals with the effect of stiffness, clearance, and its interaction on the bump foil bearings load-carrying capacity. For this study, four sets of foil bearings of the same geometry with two levels of stiffness and clearance values are fabricated. Experiments are carried out following two factor-two level factorial design approach under constant load and in each case, the lift-off speed is measured. The experimental output is analyzed using statistical techniques to evaluate the influence of parameters under consideration. The results indicate that clearance has the maximum influence on the lift-off speed/ load-carrying capacity, followed by interaction effect and stiffness. A regression model is developed based on the experimental values and model is validated using error analysis technique.

The static characteristics of misaligned three-axial water-lubricated journal bearing in the turbulent regime are analyzed for groove angles 36° and 18°. Ng and Pan’s turbulence model is applied to study the turbulence effects in the journal bearing. The static parameters such as load-carrying capacity, friction coefficient, and side leakage are found for different degree of misalignment (DM). The change in flow regime of the lubricant from laminar to turbulent and the increase in misalignment, improved the load capacity of the bearing. For lightly loaded bearings, the friction coefficient of the bearing increased with the increase in Reynolds number.
