Performance of a Short Multi-Grooved Capillary Compensated Hydrostatic Journal Bearing

This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental investigation into the performance of a short multi-grooved bearing subjected to a range of static and alternating loads. Lubricating oil was supplied, at pressures of up to 2000 lb/in2, to capillary type restrictors connected to 10 closed-end axial grooves in the bearing. The bearing had a length/diameter ratio of 1/3 and operated with a journal speed and load frequency of 327 c/min. Measured load capacity, stiffness, and flow characteristics indicate that bearings of this type have a significant load-carrying capacity at zero journal speed and that the load capacity is increased by journal rotation. A feature of the journal behaviour under alternating loads is the movement of the journal centre along a straight line coincident with the load plane. The extensive oil film pressure surveys indicate for the first time the pressure distribution within narrow hydrostatic bearings and provide a basis for a realistic theoretical analysis of this type of bearing.

The static characteristics of misaligned three-axial water-lubricated journal bearing in the turbulent regime are analyzed for groove angles 36° and 18°. Ng and Pan’s turbulence model is applied to study the turbulence effects in the journal bearing. The static parameters such as load-carrying capacity, friction coefficient, and side leakage are found for different degree of misalignment (DM). The change in flow regime of the lubricant from laminar to turbulent and the increase in misalignment, improved the load capacity of the bearing. For lightly loaded bearings, the friction coefficient of the bearing increased with the increase in Reynolds number.

The present study examines the influence of partial texturing of bearing surfaces on improvement in load capacity and reduction in friction coefficient for slider and journal bearing. The geometry of partially textured slider and journal bearing considered in this work composed of a number of successive regions of groove and land configurations. The nondimensional pressure expressions for the partially textured slider and journal bearing are derived taking into consideration of texture geometry and extent of partial texture. Partial texturing has a potential to generate load carrying capacity and reduce coefficient of friction, even for nominally parallel bearing surfaces.

This study aims to strengthen the flexural behavior of structural elements with external pre-stressing tendons, thereby improving their load-carrying capacity and increasing their resistance against the external load. Different techniques were used to apply external pre-stressed strengthening to RC beams and RC frames. Seven identical RC frames were analyzed: an original sample without an external tendon, two strengthened samples with external tendons at the positive bending zone, two strengthened samples with external tendons at the beam–column connection zone, a strengthened sample with external straight line tendons along the beam and, finally, a strengthened sample with external U-shape tendons along the beam of the frame. The analysis and the results were obtained using ANSYS WORKBENCH finite element (FE) program. Comparisons were performed between these techniques to determine which technique is better for strengthening. The failure mode, vertical deflection, column stress, load-carrying capacity, and ductility of the samples were listed and analyzed under four-point vertical loading. The results show that using external tendons significantly increases the load capacity and the stiffness of structural frames. Moreover, the tendon in the beam zone is more effective than the tendon in the column zone.

This work presents the load carrying capacity of partially textured journal bearing with trapezoidal recess. The partial texture geometry is composed of a number of successive cells of trapezoidal recess and land configurations. The non-dimensional pressure expressions for the partially textured journal bearing with trapezoidal recess are derived. Results of nondimensional load capacity are provided taking into consideration of texture geometry with trapezoidal recess and extent of partial texture.

A theoretical analysis of an infinite full journal bearing is presented for the case of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a radial magnetic field. The analysis is based on general external loading conditions. The pressure distribution is obtained under the Reynolds’ boundary conditions in which the cavitation occurrence in the low-pressure region is taken into account. The characteristics of the magnetohydrodynamic journal bearing, namely, load-carrying capacity, altitude angle, and journal driving torque are determined. Furthermore the influence of the wall properties on the load capacity is clearly shown.

The tribological characteristic of journal bearing systems can be enhanced with the integrating of textures in the contact interfaces, or using the lubricating effect of non-Newtonian fluids. In this study, the combined effects of bearing surface texturing and non-Newtonian lubricants behavior, using micropolar fluid model, on static characteristics of hydrodynamic circular journal bearings of finite length are highlighted. The modified Reynolds equation of micropolar lubrication theory is solved using finite differences scheme and Elrod's mass conservation algorithm, taking into account the presence of the cylindrical texture shape on full and optimum bearing surfaces. The optimization textured area is carried out through particle swarm optimization algorithm, in order to increase the load lifting capacity. Preliminary results are in good agreement with the reference ones, and present an enhancement in the performances of micro-textured journal bearings (load carrying capacity and friction). The results suggest that texturing the bearing convergent zone significantly increases the load carrying capacity and reduce friction coefficient, while fully texturing causes bad performances. It is also shown that the micropolar fluids exhibit better performances for smooth journal bearings than a Newtonian fluid depending on the size of material characteristic length and the coupling number. The combined effects of fully surface textured with micropolar fluids reduce the performance of journal bearing, especially at lower eccentricity ratios. Considering the optimal arrangement of textures on the contact surface, a significant improvement in terms of load capacity and friction can be achieved, particularly at high eccentricity ratios, high material characteristic lengths and high values of the coupling numbers of micropolar fluids.

The double pocket bearing design is discussed and compared to the plain three axial groove bearing. Rigid rotor stability, load capacity, and stiffness and damping curves are shown for the two bearing designs illustrating the stability and load capacity advantages of the double pocket bearing. Results show that placing double opposing stepped pockets in the top pads of a three axial groove bearing is a simple, inexpensive, expedient modification that is effective in suppressing oil whirl instability. Furthermore, the bottom plain pad retains the load carrying capacity of the original three axial groove design. Frequency spectrums substantiating the stabilizing ability of the double pocket design are shown for a test stand instability problem.

In this research, an experimental study is conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of high strength reinforced concrete corbels externally bonded with CFRP fabric sheets and Plates with different patterns taking into account the effect of adopted variables in enhancing the ultimate strength; the effect of shear span to effective depth (a/d), configuration, type and amount of bonding. Eleven high strength reinforced corbels were cast and tested under vertical loads. Test results showed there was an improvement in the behavior and load carrying capacity of all strengthened corbels. An increasing in the ultimate strength of strengthened corbel by inclined CFRP strips reached to (92.1%) while the increasing reached to (84.21%) for using one horizontal CFRP Plates compared to un-strengthened reference specimen. Also, it can be conducted that the increase of (a/d) ratio from (0.6 to 0.8) resulted in decreasing by 21.05% in ultimate load capacity of corbels and from (0.4 to 0.6) by 31.25% and 58.69% in cracking and ultimate loads respectively Using CFRP .

Purpose The current trend of modern industry is to use machineries which rotate at high speed along with the capability of carrying heavy rotor loads. This paper aims at static thermal analysis of two different profiles of non-circular journal bearings – a true elliptical bearing and orthogonal bearing. Design/methodology/approach The Reynolds equation has been solved through finite difference method to compute the oil film pressure. Parabolic temperature profile approximation technique has been used to solve the energy equation and thus used for computation of various bearing performance characteristics such as thermo-hydrodynamic oil film pressure, temperature, load capacity, Sommerfeld number and power loss characteristics across the bearing. The effect of ellipticity ratio on the bearing performance characteristics has also been obtained for both the elliptical and vertical offset bearing using three different commercially available grades of oil (Hydrol 32, 68 and 100). Findings It has been observed that the thermo-hydrodynamic pressure and temperature rise of the oil film is less in orthogonal bearing as compared to the true elliptical bearing for same operating conditions. The effect of ellipticity ratio of non-circularity on bearing performance parameters have been observed to be less in case of elliptical bearing as compared to orthogonal bearing. It has been concluded that though the rise in oil film temperature is high for true elliptical bearing, but still it should be preferred over orthogonal profile under study, as it has comparably good load-carrying capacity. Originality/value The performance parametric analysis will help the designers to select such kind of non-circular journal bearing for various applications.
