Comparative study of the lipid composition of rabbit and lobster sarcoplasmic reticulum

Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) membranes isolated from rabbit and lobster muscles have similar phospholipid classes, but they differ in plasmalogen content. The plasmalogenic species are mostly distributed among phosphatidylethanolamines (PE's) and make up about 62% of the total in rabbit SR and about 46% in lobster membranes. Lobster SR phospholipids contain large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids which are present in low amounts in rabbit membranes. The total unsaturated fatty acids of phosphatidylcholines (PC's) represent about 53% and 73% of the total fatty chains for rabbit and lobster SR, respectively. The values found for PE's were about 56% and 64%., respectively. Furthermore, lobster membranes contain significant amounts of PC and PE molecular species with unsaturated fatty acids in positions 1 and 2, whereas rabbit SR contain low amounts.

Summary A comparative study of the oil yield and fatty acid composition of three Salvia species seeds collected in different locations has been conducted. Seed oil extraction was made using a Soxhlet-extractor and fatty acid analysis was undertaken using a GC-FID. The effect of the collecting site on oil yield, as well as the content of individual fatty acid and total fatty acid and fatty acid content was significant. Seed oil yield varied from 14.94 to 22.83% and the total fatty acids ranged from 67.36 to 82.49 mg/g DW. α-Linolenic (24.02-49.19%), linoleic (20.13-42.88%), oleic (12.97-17.81%) and palmitic (8.37-16.63%) acids were the most abundant fatty acids in all analyzed samples. α-Linolenic acid was found to be the major fatty acid in S. verbenaca and S. officinalis species, however, S. aegyptiaca was characterized by the prevalence of linoleic acid. Among the unsaturated fatty acids, which were represented in all samples in high amounts (78.16-89.34%), the polyunsaturated fatty acids (α-linolenic and linoleic acids) showed important levels ranging from 63.09 to 74.71%. Seeds of S. verbenaca were the richest in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Consideration of recent analytical data supports the conclusion that the longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of marine origin are all structurally homogeneous in that the double bonds are cis, the double bonds methylene interrupted, and that, with the exception of the C16 chain length, the ultimate double bond will normally be three, six or nine carbon atoms removed from the terminal methyl group.

Abstract The lipid composition of Piqui (Caryocar coriaceum) seed oil and pulp oil was analyzed and found to contain triacylglycerols (95.1/95.3%) as major components followed by free fatty acids (1.7/1.6%), diacylglycerols (1.6/1.5%), squalene (0.3/0.3%) and monoacylglycerols (0.1/0.1%). Phospholipids were found only in seed oil (0.2%). They were identified as phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol. The sterol fraction (0.1/0.1%) contained stigmasterol and β-sito-sterol. In seed oil triacylglycerols the C-53 molecular species were dominated (52.8%) follow ed by C-55 (37.7%), C-57 (6.9%) and C-51 (2.6%) in minor quantities. In pulp oil triacylglycerols C-55 (51.7%) was predominant followed by C-53 (30.6%) and C-57 (17.7%). Palmitic (16:0) and oleic (18:1) acids were always the major fatty acids in both oils. In seed oil their quantities were nearly the same, whereas in pulp oil oleic acid was predominant. Composition of Lipids of Piqui (Caryocar coriaceum Wittm.)
