A New Experimental Method Allowing a Quantitative Measure of Orthopositronium Magnetic Quenching

A new method for determining the amount of magnetic quenching of the orthopositronium atom is described. This method, still using angular correlation techniques, allows a direct measure of the quantities which the orthopositronium magnetic quenching deals with. By this way, an experimental measurement has been performed, as a check, in water at temperature T = 20 °C and with a magnetic field H = 10 kG. The obtained value ΔIs = (1.73 ± 0.22)% is in very good agreement with the theoretical one.

The sensation of phantom motion or exhibition of bodily sway is often reported in the proximity of an MR scanner. It is proposed that the magnetic field stimulates the vestibular system. There are a number of possible mechanisms responsible, and the relative contributions of susceptibility on the otolithic receptors and the Lorentz force on the cupulae have not yet been explored. This exploratory study aims to investigate the impact of being in the proximity of a 7.0 T MR scanner. The modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance (mCTSIB) was used to qualitatively ascertain whether or not healthy control subjects who passed the mCTSIB in normal conditions 1) experienced subjective sensations of dizziness, vertigo or of leaning or shifting in gravity when in the magnetic field and 2) exhibited visibly increased bodily sway whilst in the magnetic field compared to outside the magnetic field. Condition IV of the mCTSIB was video recorded outside and inside the magnetic field, providing a semi-quantitative measure of sway. For condition IV of the mCTSIB (visual and proprioceptive cues compromised), all seven locations/orientations around the scanner yielded significantly more sway than at baseline (p < 0.01 FDR). A Student’s t-test comparing the RMS velocity of a motion marker on the upper arm during mCTSIB condition IV showed a significant increase in the amount of motion exhibited in the field (T = 2.59; d.f. = 9; p = 0.029) compared to outside the field. This initial study using qualitative measures of sway demonstrates that there is evidence for MR-naïve individuals exhibiting greater sway while performing the mCTSIB in the magnetic field compared to outside the field. Directional polarity of sway was not significant. Future studies of vestibular stimulation by magnetic fields would benefit from the development of a sensitive, objective measure of balance function, which can be performed inside a magnetic field.

The resistance of Al-21%Cu alloy under no magnetic field, DC magnetic field and AC magnetic field from liquid to solid was measured by a four-probe method. The difference of resistance versus temperature curves (R-T curves) was analyzed. It is found that the R-T curves of Al-21%Cu alloy are monotone decreasing and have two obvious turning points. Under DC magnetic field, the liquidus and solidus temperatures of the alloy both decrease, while under AC magnetic field, the liquidus and solidus temperatures both increase. There is a good agreement between the microstructure of quenching sample and R-T curves. The mechanism of the effect of magnetic fields was discussed.

In this work, we present and discuss on the deflection estimation of a bi-dimensional panel by using Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) as strain sensors embedded in the structure and a method based on the classical beam theory. The existing difficulties in the direct measure of the deflection are overcome thanks to the proposed technique and a real-time indirect structural monitoring is possible both on small and large structure. In many tests the estimated deflection with the proposed method has been compared with direct deflection measurements obtained with a mechanical comparator showing good agreement. A resolution of few tens of microns over a surface of the order of 1 m2 has been reached.

Collisions in a cylindrically symmetric non-neutral (electron) plasma, where the Larmor radius is much smaller than the Debye length, and the consequent particle transport, are studied. The plasma is confined radially by a strong axial magnetic field and axially by electric potentials. Hence two particles may interact repeatedly. Eventually they drift too far away from each other poloidally to interact any more, owing to shear in the E × B drift. The consequent build-up of correlation is limited by correlational disintegration due to collisions with ‘third particles’ between the repeated interactions. A kinetic equation including these effects is derived, and the cross-field particle transport along the density gradient is found. An associated equilibration time is shown to scale as B and to be in good agreement with the experimentally obtained values of Briscoli, Malmberg and Fine.

The rotational potential functions for the borohydride ion embedded in potassium and rubidium halides are derived from atom–atom potentials of the Buckingham (exp-6) type. The librational frequencies computed from the potential functions are in good agreement with the observed frequencies. The potential functions for rubidium and potassium borohydrides derived from the atom–atom potentials yield librational frequencies that are about 10% higher than the observed values. Since the entropy of transition for potassium and rubidium borohydrides is less than expected, there is a possibility that there is some ordering of the borohydride ions above the transition temperature. An experimental method is presented for studying the ordering of the borohydride ions based on the difference in the ground level degeneracy of a tetrahedral ion in ordered and disordered states.

According to Van Gelder the microwave absorption by a thin metal film in the presence of a static magnetic field normal to the film contains a series of peaks as the magnetic field is varied. In the present paper it is argued that these peaks correspond to Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonances of the carriers in the metal due to the quantization of electron momenta normal to the plane of the film. A simple quantum calculation is presented for the case of free electrons where the film is thin enough that to first order the microwave fields within are determined only by the boundary conditions and Maxwell's equations. The quantum expression is in good agreement with the absorption calculated using semiclassical arguments which can be readily extended to more complicated Fermi surfaces.

Impact of nanofluid natural convection due to magnetic field in existence of melting heat transfer is simulated using CVFEM in this research. KKL model is taken into account to obtain properties of CuO–H2O nanofluid. Roles of melting parameter (δ), CuO–H2O volume fraction (ϕ), Hartmann number (Ha), and Rayleigh (Ra) number are depicted in outputs. Results depict that temperature gradient improves with rise of Rayleigh number and melting parameter. Nusselt number detracts with rise of Ha. At the end, a comparison as a limiting case of the considered problem with the existing studies is made and found in good agreement.
