This paper presents a virtual maintenance application for the maintainability analysis and evaluation of flexible cables to provide recommendations on the maintainability of products containing cables during the early stages of product design. This paper provides a methodology for complex products containing cables detecting the potential defects via virtual maintenance technology. An integrated platform for analyzing and evaluating cable maintenance in a virtual environment is designed. Then, based on the maintenance simulation platform DELMIA, a cable maintainability evaluation system is proposed. The system consists of an evaluation element, a evaluation criteria, and an evaluation method. A case study on aviation aircraft subsystem disassembly was used to validate the feasibility of virtual maintenance in improving cable maintainability designs.

AbstractIn order to protect the offshore environment and strengthen the comprehensive rectification of sewage outfalls, an evaluation method of regional sewage outfalls by combining the marine numerical simulation and comprehensive evaluation technology was constructed, considering the marine environmental capacity and the ecological impact of sewage discharge from outfalls on the marine eco-environment sensitive areas. Then the layout rationality of each outfall was evaluated and the discharge scale was optimized with a case study of existing sewage outfalls in Xiamen. The results show that, the comprehensive evaluation score of Yundang outfall was 3 points in 2025, evaluated as the outfall with irrational layout. In 2035, the comprehensive evaluation scores of Fenglin and Dalipu outfalls were 3 and 2 points respectively, evaluated as the outfall with irrational discharge scale. It is suggested to control the scale of expansion or increase the reclaimed water reuse rate in Jimei and Gaoqi Wastewater Treatment Plants. This method has enriched the evaluation system for layout optimization of sewage outfalls, providing scientific supports for comprehensive improvement of sewage outfalls and marine environmental management.

Furniture products are the main sources of indoor air pollution due to the emission of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is great significant to establish a scientific certification and evaluation system to promote furniture manufacturers to reduce the harmful substances release in furniture products and protect human health in China. This paper describes an investigation on release of formaldehyde, soluble heavy metals, benzene, toluene, xylene and other substances from 28 furniture products by dryer method and environmental chamber method. Studies on current development status of certification and evaluation of harmful substance release from furniture products in China were carried out. Case study of certification and evaluation method suitable for furniture production industry was made, and the existing problems and suggestions were provided for improvement of certification and evaluation method system based on the characteristics of furniture industry.

Simulation has become an essential way and sometimes the only way to study complex systems (e.g., system of systems, SoS). Simulation is the model-based activity. How to build a high-quality model is the first consideration in simulation. Fidelity and credibility are the two mostly used metrics to evaluate the quality of a model. However, the definitions and evaluation methods of fidelity and credibility vary from one research to another and it’s hard to evaluate the metrics precisely. More importantly, the evolution process of a model in use cannot be directly reflected by the two metrics. Therefore, this paper introduces the model maturity to track the status of a model during its life cycle, especially in the use and management phases, which will be an important supplement to the quality evaluation system of models. The concept of model maturity is given and a framework of index system for model maturity evaluation is established. Then, a hierarchical evaluation method based on qualitative and quantitative analysis (HEQQ) for model maturity is proposed. Finally, a case study is used to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have numerous inherent challenges, including running out of power frequently and taking a long time to charge. To make matters worse, current automotive navigation systems cannot provide proper route searches that include charging plans. One way to tackle these challenging problems is to propose several route plans and select one which meets the driver’s needs. In this paper, the following three evaluation criteria are proposed: shortening travel time by predicting charging queues, maintaining high residual capacity of the battery, and utilizing charging time. The proposed method is applied to Okinawa, Japan as a case study. The simulation results using this evaluation method in Okinawa demonstrate its potential utility and open the way for future work on relieving the stress of EV drivers.

In order to make a reasonable evaluation of highway traffic safety facilities, a comprehensive evaluation method based on set pair analysis was proposed. An evaluation system of freeway traffic safety facilities was established. Combined with relevant norms and standards, each indicator in the evaluation system was divided and a reasonable threshold has been set. Through the calculation of the connection degree of ‘identicalness, differentness and reverse’, the maximum connection degree criterion was used to judge the evaluation results of freeway traffic safety facilities. Finally a case study was conducted to verify the proposed evaluation method. The case study shows that the selected highway traffic safety facilities are at a good level and this method can provide scientific decision basis for highway traffic facility renovation.

It is of great significance to establish a scientific and reasonable water resources carrying capacity evaluation system and evaluation method on the basis of studying the interdependence and mutual relations of water resources, society, economy and the ecological environment. This can guide water resources utilization and economic and social development planning, and promote the sustainable development of water resources and the socio-economic system. Projection pursuit technology can achieve automatic index selection and index weight confirmation. When used to assess water resources carrying capacity, the subjectivity and uncertainty of index weights can be avoided. Meanwhile, it can also be used to optimize the index system, and can improve the accuracy of evaluation results and discrimination. In this paper, the projection pursuit grade model of water resources carrying capacity is established. The evaluation criteria are determined by combining the theory with practice. Grades I to IV indicate that the water resources capacity declines gradually. This is the first study of water resources carrying capacity in four municipalities in China. The results show that the water resources carrying capacity of the four municipalities in 2012 belong to the third level, Chongqing is close to the second level and Tianjin is close to the fourth level.

Abstract In the field of machine vision, image edge detection is an important technology, which can make necessary preparation for the later image processing. Consequently, accurate evaluation of the edge detection effect of the processed image is a more critical technology. In this paper, the new three criteria are proposed, which is based on Canny's three criteria for edge detection. Through theoretical analysis, three quantitative basic evaluation indexes are given to the new three criteria, namely SSIM index of image reconstruction similarity, BIdx index of edge reliability and CIdx index of edge continuity. Additionally, noise evaluation criteria is also considered. Then the four basic evaluation indexes are fused to get the objective evaluation index EIdx of image edge detection.Finally, the experimental data show that the accuracy of the method is better than that of the subjective evaluation system.

Purpose Manufacturing firms delivering complex products and systems are increasingly offering advanced data-based services. Customers, however, are not always willing to adopt manufacturers’ advanced services, so manufacturers need knowledge of how to promote customers’ service readiness. The purpose of this paper is to further develop the concept of service readiness by proposing a framework for industrial customers’ organizational dimension of service readiness and by increasing the understanding of the conditions underpinning that service readiness. Design/methodology/approach This case study explores service readiness among customers of a manufacturer delivering complex systems and related services. Interviews were conducted within the company and among key customers as the potential users of those services. Findings Customers use versatile processes, engage multiple people and use different evaluation criteria when considering adoption of data-based services. The organizational component of service readiness involves requirements in the service context, supplier relations and organizational habits and culture. Actions are proposed for manufacturers to promote customers’ readiness for new services. Research limitations/implications The research is limited through its qualitative design and case selection. Mapping of the organizational dimension of service readiness further develops the concept of service readiness and offers a framework for further research. This research offers novel understanding of organization-level service adoption to complement individual-centric technology adoption. Practical implications New knowledge is offered to manufacturing firms about customers’ challenges and requirements in adopting advanced services. This knowledge will help manufacturers to support customers and develop the activities of their own salespeople when introducing advanced services. Originality/value The findings expose the contents of the organizational dimension of customers’ service readiness. The study provides a more complete picture of service readiness and shows it to be a multilayered concept with interdependencies between its levels, between individuals in customer organizations and even between the manufacturer and the customer organization.

Abstract In virtual maintenance, the most widely used accessibility evaluation method is to use virtual human reach envelope surface to judge and evaluate accessibility. However, this method can only give two kinds of evaluation results: reachable and unreachable. There is not enough data and theoretical support for the construction of envelope surface, and the precision and accuracy of evaluation need to be improved. In this paper, a parameterized accessibility evaluation method and a method of accessibility envelope surface construction are proposed. Firstly, to objectively describe the movement of human body, a 6-joint and 5-link D-H (Denavit-Hartenberg) link model is established from the waist to the fingertip of the human body, and the ranges of 10 degrees of freedom and angles related to accessibility are determined according to ergonomics. Then, comfort is introduced to refine the accessibility evaluation, and a multi-level accessibility evaluation system based on comfort is constructed according to RULA (the rapid upper limb assessment). In order to facilitate the application of this method in virtual environment, a method of accessibility envelope surface construction is proposed. Firstly, the reachable points are generated by Monte Carlo simulation based on the D-H model. Secondly, the accessibility envelope surface is composed of the outermost random reachable points. Finally, the comparison experiment with the reachable envelope provided by DELMIA in virtual environment shows that the proposed method is more accurate, meticulous and objective. Based on this method, an accessibility evaluation tool has been developed in CATIA and has been applied in some scientific research institutes.
