SiC and SiO 2 nano-particles were co-deposited with electroless NiP coating onto API-5L-X65 steel substrates with 7g/L load of nano-particles in the bath at pH 4.6 ± 0.2 and temperature of 90 ± 2°C. The hardness and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were measured using micro-hardness, polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Moreover, the structure of the composite coatings was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, while their morphologies and elemental compositions were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Results showed that co-deposited nano-particles caused an increase in the hardness of the composite coatings. Corrosion tests showed that addition of nano- SiO 2 particles improved corrosion resistance of electroless Ni - P coatings in salty atmosphere but addition of nano- SiC particles decreased, due to the agglomeration of SiC nano-particles together with an increase in the porosity of the composite coatings.

Electroless composite coatings have been vastly used in various industries during last decades due to their good properties, such as corrosion and wear resistance, hardness and uniform thickness. In this paper, co-deposition of TiO 2 nano-particles with Nickel-Phosphorus electroless coatings on API-5L-X65 steel substrates was investigated. Surface morphology and composition of coatings were studied via SEM and EDX, respectively. XRD analyses showed that these coatings had amorphous structure with TiO 2 crystalline particles. TiO 2 nano-particles increased microhardness of coatings. Corrosion resistance of these coatings was tested using linear polarization in 0.5M sulfuric acid electrolyte. Results showed that NiP - TiO 2 electroless composite coatings increased corrosion resistance of substrates.

Ni-P/nano- SiC composite coatings were deposited in different concentrations of SiC nano-particles in the bath. The hardness and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings with different content of SiC nano-particles were measured. Moreover, the structure of the composite coatings was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), while their morphologies and elemental composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Results showed that co-deposited SiC nano-particles contributed to increase the hardness but corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-P coatings decreased due to agglomeration of nano-particles and increasing porosity of coatings.

Ni–W–Al2O3 nanocomposite coatings were deposited on the low-carbon steel substrates from aqueous sulfate-citrate electrolytes containing various amounts of Al3O2 nanoparticles. Their surface morphology, element and phase composition were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance was carried out using the potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is shown that incorporation of Al2O3 nano-particles into amorphous Ni–W coating would transform its structure to being crystalline and influence its properties. The hardness sharply increases and corrosion resistance performance significantly decreases even after few Al2O3 nanoparticles (2 g/L) were added into the bath. In addition, with increase of Al2O3 addition in the bath, a tendency of increase in hardness and corrosion resistance performance is observed.

The process of electroless plating Ni - P and Ni - P /nano- SiO 2 on API-5L X65 carbon steels was improved. The Ni - P /nano- SiO 2 composite coatings were prepared from the bathes containing different concentrations of nano- SiO 2 particles. The coatings surface and morphologies were observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions were analyzed by EDAX. The corrosion behaviors were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The experimental results indicated that SiO 2 nano-particles co-deposited but some agglomeration occurred. Micro-hardness of electroless Ni - P - SiO 2 composite coatings increased due to the existence of nano-particles. Corrosion tests showed that both electroless Ni - P and Ni - P /nano- SiO 2 composite coatings demonstrated significant improvement of corrosion resistance of substrate in salty atmosphere and latter coating type appeared to offer a better corrosion protection.

Composite coatings constitute a new class of materials which are mostly used for mechanical and tribological applications. The corrosion resistance of these composite coatings, however, has not been systematically studied and compared. In this study, electroless Ni – P composite coatings are formed on St 37 steel through the addition of nano-scale SiC particles to the plating bath. This work aimed to investigate the corrosion characteristics of electroless nickel composite coatings using electrochemical measurements which include polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The morphology and structure of the composite coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that both electroless nickel and electroless nickel composite coatings demonstrated significant improvement of corrosion resistance in salty atmosphere.

Composite coatings were prepared using electroless nickel bath containing different concentrations of Al2O3nano-particles. The analyses of coating compositions, carried out by EDS, showed that there is marginal difference between phosphorus contents of NiP and NiP/nano-Al2O3deposits. The structure of the coatings was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It has been found that the co-deposition of nano-Al2O3particles with Ni disturbs the NiP coating’s regular surface structure and increases its surface roughness. DC and AC electrochemical tests were carried out on such coatings in a 3.5wt.% solution of NaCl in order to evaluate their corrosion resistance. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests both showed that, the corrosion resistance of NiP-Al2O3coatings firstly increases and then decreases when Al2O3concentration in electroless bath is increasing, but the corrosion resistance of NiP-Al2O3composite coating is better than that of amorphous NiP coating.

Electroless nickel coatings are widely popular in various industrial sectors due to their excellent tribological properties. The present study considers optimization of coating parameters along with annealing temperature to improve microhardness and corrosion resistance of Ni-P-TiO2 composite coatings. Grey relational analysis is used to find out the optimal combination of coating parameters. From the analysis, it is confirmed that annealing temperature of the coating has the most significant effect and amount of titanium particles in the coating has some significant effect on corrosion properties of the coating. The same trend is observed in case of combined study of corrosion behavior and microhardness. The surface morphology, phase transformation and the chemical composition are examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and energy dispersive analysis respectively. The Ni-P-TiO2 composite coating revealed nodular structure with almost uniform distribution of titanium particles and it turns in to crystalline structure after heat treatment.

Ni–B4C composite coatings on carbon steel substrates with various contents of B4C nano-particulates were prepared by electrodeposition in Ni plating bath containing B4C nano-particulates. Microhardness, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Tafel polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were used to compare pure nickel coatings and Ni–B4C composite coatings. Pure Ni coating microhardness is lower than that of Ni–B4C coatings and the microhardness of the composite coatings increases with the increase of the content of B4C nano-particulates. The effects of various contents of B4C nano-particulates on the corrosion resistance were investigated and it was found that the best anti–corrosion property of Ni–B4C composite coatings is at 6 g/L B4C in the bath formulation.

The Ni-P-W/nano-Al2O3composite coatings were deposited on the surface of sintered NdFeB permanent magnet by electroless plating method. The morphology and the phases of Ni-P-W/nano-Al2O3composite coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction respectively. The hardness and the corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were also tested. The results indicated that the composite coatings morphology appears closely nodules morphology, and the microhardness increases with increasing incorporation of Al2O3ratio. Compared with NdFeB magnet and Ni-P-W alloy coatings, the corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was superior to that of the NdFeB magnet and the alloy coating obviously.

Electroless nickel plating with potassium titanate whisker was co-deposited on medium carbon steel substrates. The microstructure of the composite coatings was investigated. The effect of aging temperature on the microstructure of the composite coatings was studied using X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the composite coatings will turn into crystal state with increasing heat treatment temperature. Experimental results also show that a maximum hardness is achieved for the composite coating after heat treatment at 400°C for 1 hour. The corrosion resistance and tribological properties of the composite coatings are not inferior to those of electroless Ni-P coating.
