Science-Based Innovation in China: A Case Study of Artemisinin from Laboratory to the Market

Science-based innovation emerged from novel and discontinuous innovations which provoked irreversible yet significant changes in science and technology. This research investigated the commercialization process of artemisinin, a typical science-based innovation in China. Due to her research involvement with artimisinin (qinghaosu), Tu Youyou received the 2011 Lasker Award in clinical medicine and the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura. In this paper, the authors reviewed the process of artemisinin’s innovation from labs in a research institute to its entrance into the market. Based on the research, we reached the following conclusions. First, during the process of science-based innovation, a “new technology platform” might be established and a series of applications might be invented. Second, the extensive cooperation among research institutions and companies played a vital role in the science-based innovation. Third, the science-based innovation emerged through multidisciplinary research teams as well as contacts among scientists with cross-fields expertise. Fourth, for science-based innovation, early research funding mainly relied on public funds. During the commercialization stage, corporate funding plays a major role. Fifth, a clear research objective, an overall planning, coordination, and the stability of policies were also important factors in the entire science-based innovation process.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to explore how technological capability and exogenous pressure interactively influence business model (BM) dynamics over time in new technology-based ventures.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a longitudinal case study of the BM innovations of a Chinese financial technology venture. The structural approach and temporal bracket are used to analyze and theorize the data.FindingsThe findings indicate that distinct contextual changes impel a firm to refine or abandon existing BMs over time. In different stages, the antecedents interactively influence BM dynamics with three successive patterns, namely pressure dominance, parallel influence and hybrid influence. While both antecedents trigger changes during the initiation and implementation of new BMs, they also serve as the filter and the enabler, respectively, during the ideation and integration of BMs.Research limitations/implicationsThe study inductively develops three propositions regarding the relationship between BM dynamics and its antecedents, which is based on the data collected from one single firm. Future research should test the propositions in other domains and take more cross-level antecedents into consideration.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the nascent research stream of BM dynamics by offering in-depth insights into the interaction of internal and external antecedents and by linking the differentiated roles of antecedents to the BM innovation process. The research offers some practical implications for new technology-based ventures seeking to develop BMs in a fast-changing environment.


Stamping die industries had been a significant impact on research and development of new technology for bigger and advance. To sustain the stamping die industry under the current global situation, cost and time are most important factors that need to be focus. In this case study, the main problem of design and analysis of progressive die is cost spent for die fabrication is high, the number of station or stages is high that will affect the production time and lifespan of tool is short. This paper focused at the stages or station that will be redesign to reduce the cost for the die, station optimization to reduce time taken for stamping process and simulate the design of tools to calculate the life cycle of punch. The study is conducted through AutoCAD and Solidwork to redesign the die and strip layout optimization. Subsequently, the ABAQUS/CAE and e-fatigue are used to completed the analysis and life cycle results for punch with various design of punch edge. Theoretical analysis indicates that design of punch plays a vital role in life cycle analysis.

After excavation, insitu stress conditions are changed which lead deformation due to the stress concentration. For the stability in the excavated tunnel profile, appropriate support system is essential. To recommend the support system, site specific data are used from Higher Himalayan Region of Nepal. Study is focused on 3 m and 6 m size inverted D Shaped tunnel with three different overburden thickness. For the analysis of support system: Empirical method, Analytical method and Numerical Modeling are performed. Result obtained from the different approaches for three different overburden heights as well as for both size tunnels are compared and finally required support system is recommended. It was found significant change in deformations while increase in size of tunnel. Overburden thickness is also playing the vital role in this parameter but size effect is more prominent.

Rural electrification is an essential requirement for improving the lives of people residing in rural areas and improving their image among the international community. To install Photo Voltaic (PV) panels in isolated regions as per government plans and regulations, solar-based micro grids are needed for Efficiency in the Energy Sector. There are many components required for installing and operating a micro grid. In addition, the location of the micro grid also plays a vital role in the installation. To analyze the difficulties and challenges, especially in hilly terrains, a detailed review of the factors involved in installation of solar-based micro grid is carried out. The general challenges involving the technical difficulties such as the stability, reliability, power imbalance, control and operation are presented in this paper. Stand-alone models of micro grids are described along with its advantages. The government initiatives like subsidies and funding for rural electrification is discussed. As a case study, two micro grids in India, one at Ladakh and one at west Bengal are presented. These case studies bring out the problems and issues faced during the rural electrification and recommendations were given for the future scope.

The healthcare hub is the leading factor for current economic growth of India. Human Factor Engineering (HFE) plays a vital role in this field. In medical or healthcare, the field is named as Medical Human Factor Engineering (MHFE). This paper discusses on how MHFE responsible for strengthen the Technology Management of Hospital, Hazards from device failure and use related, Human Factors consideration in medical device use and case study on (Infusion Pumps) errors committed by users in each clinical area. Now the challenging issue for HFE is to design a proper workspace to avoid human errors and the four workspace design principles of Sanders & McCormick (1993) is also discussed. This paper deals with the Computer-aided-design (CAD) systems and a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique with Simple Organizational Structure of HFE in designing the workspace.

Current supply chain methods are having difficulties in resolving problems arising from the lack of trust in supply chains. The root reason lies in two challenges brought to the traditional mechanism: self-interests of supply chain members and information asymmetry in production processes. Blockchain is a promising technology to address these problems. The key objective of this paper is to present qualitative analysis for blockchain in supply chain as the decision-making framework to implement this new technology. The analysis method used Val IT business case framework, validated by the expert judgements. The further study needs to be elaborated by either the existing organization that use blockchain or assessment by the organization that will use blockchain to improve their supply chain management.

In this study we propose the establishment of theological rules (qawāʿid iʿtiqādiyya) similar to the jurisitic rules (qawāʿid fiqhiyya) which have for centuries been very important to Islamic jurisprudence, and which play a vital role in jurisprudence and uṣūl al-fiqh. The present article takes the second sura of the Qur'an, Sūrat al-Baqara, as a case study, identifying three fundamental principles in this sura: (i) man is honoured (al-insān mukarram), (ii) the Resurrection is a reality (al-baʿth ḥaqq) (iii) belief in all prophets is obligatory (al-īmān bi-kāfat al-anbiyāʾ wājib). These three rules are emphasised and reiterated in many parts of the sura, to a greater extent than any other principle. This study calls for other scholars to consider this proposition and develop it further.
