AbstractThis study examined the impact of dynamic capacities on the performance of food and beverage enterprises in Lagos, Nigeria. The following sub-variables (strategic decision-making capacity, product innovation capacity, strategic flexibility, competitive intensity, technological turbulence, and technological capability) were employed to represent the variable of dynamic capacity. Also, the following sub-variables (sales growth, enterprise survival, enterprise efficiency, and competitive advantage) were employed to represent the variable of enterprise performance. Primary data was used to achieve descriptive and inferential statistics, and the statistics is estimated by the PLS-SEM method which was calibrated on Lisrel 8.70 software. This study found that product innovation, competitive intensity and technological turbulence, technological capability and competitive intensity, and strategic flexibility are critical sub-variables in determining the robustness of dynamic capacities, as they adequately improve increasing sales growth, survival, and sustenance of enterprise into the unforeseeable future, efficiency of enterprise, and competitive advantage of food and beverage manufacturing enterprises, respectively, particularly in this trying period that is evidenced with technological change and competition, among others.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to explore how technological capability and exogenous pressure interactively influence business model (BM) dynamics over time in new technology-based ventures.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a longitudinal case study of the BM innovations of a Chinese financial technology venture. The structural approach and temporal bracket are used to analyze and theorize the data.FindingsThe findings indicate that distinct contextual changes impel a firm to refine or abandon existing BMs over time. In different stages, the antecedents interactively influence BM dynamics with three successive patterns, namely pressure dominance, parallel influence and hybrid influence. While both antecedents trigger changes during the initiation and implementation of new BMs, they also serve as the filter and the enabler, respectively, during the ideation and integration of BMs.Research limitations/implicationsThe study inductively develops three propositions regarding the relationship between BM dynamics and its antecedents, which is based on the data collected from one single firm. Future research should test the propositions in other domains and take more cross-level antecedents into consideration.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the nascent research stream of BM dynamics by offering in-depth insights into the interaction of internal and external antecedents and by linking the differentiated roles of antecedents to the BM innovation process. The research offers some practical implications for new technology-based ventures seeking to develop BMs in a fast-changing environment.

In recent years, the impact of technology management and technological capability on new product development performance has aroused widespread concern. As a result, research models based on the notion of fit between technology management and technological capability seems to show promise. This paper aims to whether there exists a fit between technology management and technological capability and the effect of this fit on new product development performance. Research results show that the fit between technology management and technological capability has a positive effect on new product development performance. Moreover, the fit between technology management and technological capability in firms with high new product development performance is dominated by technological capability, while that in firms with low new product development performance is dominated by technology management.

This study examined differences in basic occupational competence, career decision making self-efficacy and major continuity intention according to specific majors between college students majoring in beauty art, and the effects career decision making self-efficacy had on major continuity intention. The results are presented as follows: First. as results of analysing the differences in, basic occupational competence, career decision making self-efficacy and major continuity intention according to specific majors, there were statistically significant differences in sub-variables including communication ability, personal relationship ability, problem solving ability, technological capability, major satisfaction, career decision making self-efficacy. Second, as a result of examining the effects basic occupational competence had on Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy, it was discovered that technological capability and personal relationship ability had a significant effect on career decision making self-efficacy. Third, as a result of examining the effects basic occupational competence had on major continuity intention, it was discovered that personal relationship ability had a significant effect on major continuity intention. Fourth, as a result of examining the effects career decision making self-efficacy had on major continuity intention, it was discovered that the former had a significant effect on the latter.

Drawing on the Coase theorem, we consider a firm’s decision to transfer patent ownership to another firm in the markets for innovation. We deem that the proximity of a patent’s technology structure to that of a firm’s patent portfolio will generally result in greater marginal productivity of the patent, leading to enhanced prospects for the firm’s economic return. We thus predict that firms are more likely to trade patents when the technology structure of a patent is closer to the technology stock of a potential buyer compared with that of its original assignee. However, such a relationship will be weaker when a potential buyer and the original assignee have greater product-market overlap or when the assignee has superior technological capability. We test these predictions by employing a dyad-level analysis of transactional decisions during the 1987–2016 period on 40,110 U.S. patents assigned to 57 major biopharmaceutical firms. Our study provides novel insights on factors that facilitate or inhibit patent trade in the markets for innovation.

This study aims to gain an understanding of the role of technological capability as a moderating variable on the effect of ERP implementation on operational performance. Companies are expected to utilize information technology capability to encourage the sustainability of information technology developments. This study used secondary data from companies that have implemented ERP in Indonesia. The data were tested for validity and reliability and classical assumptions. It used moderated regression analysis by considering technological capability as a moderating variable. The sample taken consists of companies in Indonesia that have used ERP for at least three years. The result indicates that there is an effect ERP implementation on operational performance but there is no effect of technology capability as a moderating variable on the effect of ERP implementation on operational performance. This study provides theoretical and practical contributions by explaining how to build IT capability so that the implementation of ERP drives the operational performance of business processes. This implies the importance of companies implementing ERP and understanding ERP development systems such as good corporate strategies, executive support, and changes in business processes. The results of this study imply that there are factors that strengthen or weaken the effect of ERP implementation on operational performance in addition to IT capabilities.

China is a developing country but has made impressive progress in technological capability development. One strategy proved to be effective is the use of large-scale programs to help technological capability development. Examples include the subway equipment industry, the high-speed rail industry, the power generation equipment industry, the power transmission industry, the telecom equipment industry, etc. In all these sectors, China was lagging behind the technological innovation frontier before the related large-scale programs but is now among the world leaders. In this chapter we will try to understand the process of initiating and managing these large-scale programs.
