The Appalachian Orogen is divided into five broad zones based on stratigraphic and structural contrasts between Cambrian–Ordovician and older rocks. From west to east, these are the Humber, Dunnage, Gander, Avalon, and Meguma Zones.The westerly three zones fit present models for the development of the orogen through the generation and destruction of a late Precambrian – Early Paleozoic Iapetus Ocean. Thus, the Humber Zone records the development and destruction on an Atlantic-type continental margin, i.e., the ancient continental margin of Eastern North America that lay to the west of Iapetus; the Dunnage Zone represents vestiges of Iapetus with island arc sequences and mélanges built upon oceanic crust; and the Gander Zone records the development and destruction of a continental margin, at least in places of Andean type, that lay to the east of Iapetus.The Precambrian development of the Avalon Zone relates either to rifting and the initiation of Iapetus or to subduction and a cycle that preceded the opening of Iapetus. During the Cambrian Period, the Avalon Zone was a stable platform or marine shelf.Cambrian–Ordovician rocks of the Meguma Zone represent either a remnant of the continental embankment of ancient Northwest Africa or the marine fill of a graben developed within the Avalon Zone.Silurian and younger rocks of the Appalachian Orogen are mixed marine and terrestrial deposits that are unrelated to the earlier Paleozoic zonation of the system. Silurian and later development of the orogen is viewed as the history of deposition and deformation in successor basins that formed across the already destroyed margins and oceanic tract of Iapetus.

The Congo Basin region is believed to be the site of the cross-species transmission event that yielded HIV-1 group M (HIV-1M). It is thus likely that the virus has been present and evolving in the region since that cross-species transmission. As HIV-1M was only discovered in the early 1980s, our directly observed record of the epidemic is largely limited to the past four decades. Nevertheless, by exploiting the genetic relatedness of contemporary HIV-1M sequences, phylogenetic methods provide a powerful framework for investigating simultaneously the evolutionary and epidemiologic history of the virus. Such an approach has been taken to find that the currently classified HIV-1 M subtypes and Circulating Recombinant Forms (CRFs) do not give a complete view of HIV-1 diversity. In addition, the currently identified major HIV-1M subtypes were likely genetically predisposed to becoming a major component of the present epidemic, even before the events that resulted in the global epidemic. Further efforts have identified statistically significant hot- and cold-spots of HIV-1M subtypes sequence inheritance in genomic regions of recombinant forms. In this review we provide ours and others recent findings on the emergence and spread of HIV-1M variants in the region, which have provided insights into the early evolution of this virus.

‘History of reptiles’ describes the origin and early evolution of reptiles, from the early ancestor-like Hylonomus and Petrolacosaurus 320 million years ago (mya) in the Carboniferous period. The end-Permian mass extinction, 250 mya, removed over 90 per cent of the world’s species of animals and plants, but one group—the archosaurs—began to expand and diversify. The archosaurs included the dinosaurs, made up of the Theropoda, the Sauropodomorphs, the Ornithischia, the pterosaurs, and the crocodiles. In the Mesozoic Era, several new kinds of reptiles evolved adaptations for life in the sea—plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and others. The end-Cretaceous mass extinction, 66 mya, ended the dinosaurs, but many lizards, snakes, chelonians, and crocodiles survived.

The spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) is a forest pest in all Canadian Provinces and Territories, and in the northeastern, midwest, and northwestern Unired States. It is by iar the most destructive insect affeiting the extensive balsam fir-spruce forest types in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritime Provinces, and Maine. Outbreaks of varying extent have been reported from these regions almost every year for the past half-century (deGryse, 1947). Periods in which outbreaks were particularly severe and widespread occurred from about 1909 to 1920 and in the 1940's and 1950's. In both periods, outbreaks showed a tendency to shift from west to east, intensifying first in parts of northern Ontario and Quebec and dying out in the Atlantic region south of the St. Lawrence River.

The history of clinical neuropsychology and development of the profession into its present form depended on several lines of inquiry about human behavior, illness, and brain function. Clinical neuropsychology required apparatus to measure cognitive functions, group research to objectively measure and catalogue those functions across the normative spectrum, more sophisticated neurodiagnostic nosology, and an approach that integrated behavioral, psychological, medical, and statistical expertise. Many scientists and practitioners since the late 1880s participated and contributed to this endeavor. This chapter describes how several “forgotten” and better-remembered founders of neuropsychology were able to advance the development of this profession, and how their contributions fit into the ongoing science that became clinical neuropsychology.

Nocturnality is widespread among extant mammals and often considered the ancestral behavioural pattern for all mammals. However, mammals are nested within a larger clade, Synapsida, and non-mammalian synapsids comprise a rich phylogenetic, morphological and ecological diversity. Even though non-mammalian synapsids potentially could elucidate the early evolution of diel activity patterns and enrich the understanding of synapsid palaeobiology, data on their diel activity are currently unavailable. Using scleral ring and orbit dimensions, we demonstrate that nocturnal activity was not an innovation unique to mammals but a character that appeared much earlier in synapsid history, possibly several times independently. The 24 Carboniferous to Jurassic non-mammalian synapsid species in our sample featured eye morphologies consistent with all major diel activity patterns, with examples of nocturnality as old as the Late Carboniferous ( ca 300 Ma). Carnivores such as Sphenacodon ferox and Dimetrodon milleri , but also the herbivorous cynodont Tritylodon longaevus were likely nocturnal, whereas most of the anomodont herbivores are reconstructed as diurnal. Recognizing the complexity of diel activity patterns in non-mammalian synapsids is an important step towards a more nuanced picture of the evolutionary history of behaviour in the synapsid clade.

In many slave societies manumission coexisted with perpetual bondage, often featured by self-purchase by slave artisans, a practice that some societies monitored through recognition of the slave's legal personality as a contracting party. Manumission played a comparatively minor role in shaping North American slavery, with debatable exceptions in the mid-Atlantic region; historians of slavery there have portrayed manumitters as individuals of conscience and/or economic maximizers seeking profitable exits from a locally declining labor institution. This contrast was first noted by Frank Tannenbaum, who characterized slavery in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking America as milder than in British America, and targeted differences in religion and in the European history of slavery of each society as key explanatory factors.

Phytophthora capsici Leonian, the causal agent of lima bean pod rot, was first identified as a pathogen of lima bean in 2002 (1) and poses a new threat to lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) production in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The phenylamide fungicide mefenoxam (Ridomil Gold; Syngenta Crop Protection) is widely used in the region for controlling foliar and soilborne diseases caused by Oomycetes. Isolates of P. capsici were collected from lima bean pods from production fields in Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey from 1998 to 2004. These isolates originated from survey samples of lima bean fields for another pathogen, P. phaseoli, in 1999 and 2000 and diagnostic samples were submitted to the Plant Disease Clinic. Isolates were from lima bean, except for one from pepper (basal stem). Identification was made on the basis of morphometric characteristics. No known sensitive or insensitive isolates were included in the evaluation. Single zoospore cultures were evaluated for mefenoxam sensitivity on V8 agar plates amended with 100 ppm of mefenoxam, a previously tested concentration (2). Seven-millimeter-diameter agar plugs of each isolate were cut from the edge of actively expanding cultures of P. capsici with a cork borer and transferred to three V8 agar plates amended with mefenoxam and three unamended V8 plates. The plates were arranged in a completely randomized design and incubated at 25°C in the dark for 3 days. After incubation, colony growth was measured in millimeters and averaged for the three replicate plates of each isolate and percent growth relative to the unamended control was calculated. Mefenoxam sensitivity was assigned according to methods of Lamour et al. (2). The experiment was repeated once, and also run with a treatment of 200 ppm of mefenoxam. Of sixteen isolates screened, nine were rated as sensitive, four were intermediately resistant, and three were resistant. There was no difference between the 100 and 200 ppm results, except for a slight increase in sensitivity for one isolate. A subsequent experiment tested five isolates at concentrations of 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 ppm. Results were consistent with previous tests, with resistant isolates exhibiting some growth at the highest concentration of mefenoxam. One resistant isolate was from a field in Delaware previously cropped to slicing cucumbers with a history of mefenoxam applications. The second was from Caroline County, MD, which is heavily cropped to pickling cucumbers and likely to have been exposed to mefanoxam applications for the control of fruit rot; the origin of the third insensitive isolate from lima bean is unknown. Mefanoxam usage on lima bean is usually limited to one foliar application of mefenoxam+copper hydroxide to control downy mildew in the fall crop in wet seasons. This study indicates that mefenoxam resistance is present in populations of P. capsici in lima bean fields in the Mid-Atlantic Region, presumably as a result of mefenoxam applications to other vegetable crops, principally cucurbits, which are planted in rotation with lima beans or from nearby cucurbit fields. Implementing strategies to minimize fungicide resistance in other vegetables is important to slow resistance development associated with this emerging pathogen on lima beans. Lima bean pod rot continues to be seen sporadically each year in fields with a history of P. capsici and abundant rainfall or excessive irrigation. References: (1) C. R. Davidson et al.
