Effect of altitude on endurance running of Peromyscus maniculatus

One subspecies of deer mouse is distributed from the floor of Death Valley to the tops of California's highest peaks. Endurance studies were made on two populations from 4,000 and 12,470 ft, respectively, at the Owens Valley and Barcroft Laboratories of the White Mountain Research Station. Mice ran on a treadmill at a speed of 40 m/min and an inclination of 50 % (22.5 deg). Studies were made in February and March, so all animals used were adults. The mean of 25 performances by valley mice was 15.8 min; the mean of 22 performances by mountain mice was 7.5 min. The chief factor of difference between the two groups is in the reduced pO2 of the mountain environment and consequent hypoxia at this altitude. However, customary ambient temperatures are quite different, although room temperatures in which the animals were kept were similar. Although there is a possible differential effect of the same ambient temperature on the two mice populations, it was not discernible within each population except possibly in those trials run at over 20 C. The documentation of diurnal patterns in body temperature in lions could be important because disruption of circadian patterns can be a useful measure of distress. This study quantified changes in body temperature of seven African lions (Panthera leo) at 5 min intervals during cold conditions from noon until the ingested body temperature loggers were expelled the next day. Thirteen loggers were fed to 11 lions during their daily noon feeding, while ambient temperatures were also recorded using six data loggers. The lions had continuous access to their dens and exercise pens during the day but were restricted to their heavily bedded dens that also contained a heat lamp from 23:00 until 08:00 the next day. Body temperatures averaged 37.95 ± 0.42 °C at 15:50, and 36.81 ± 0.17 °C at 06:50 the next day, 30 min before the first loggers passed from a lion, and were significantly different (t-test, t = 8.09, df = 6, p < 0.0003). The mean duration for the time of passage was 22 ± 2.69 (h ± SD), so future studies using the noninvasive feeding of temperature loggers need to consider that time frame.

The establishment, staffing and structure and observations made in the first year of the existence of coronary care in an intensive care unit in a general hospital are recorded. Two hundred and twenty eight patients were admitted during the year in whom the diagnosis of myocardial infarction was confirmed. There were 29 deaths in the unit and 14 deaths occurred in the wards of the hospital after discharge from the unit. 49.1 per cent of the patients were admitted within 4 hours of the onset of symptoms and the mean duration of stay in the unit was 86.5 hours. The type of arrhythmia detected in the unit, and the treatment given to the patients both before and after admission to the intensive care unit are described.

Surgical process re-engineering is a methodology where the entire surgical process is systematically analysed and re-designed. The process starts with mapping of the current process followed by in-depth analysis of the existing process. A new process is drafted with the aim of making the whole procedure more efficient. The new process is then discussed with all the staff involved in the operating room. Following implementation of the process, surgical process re-engineering should ideally be routinely carried out to continuously improve the procedure. We present an example of surgical process re-engineering which we carried out on the procedure of carpal tunnel release. We used carpal tunnel release as a model as it is a very common operation, with predictable intra-operative findings, and the patient is likely to benefit directly from procedure time reduction. A preliminary mapping of three procedures was done followed by a detailed timed mapping of five routine carpal tunnel decompression procedures. The mapped process was analysed in detail and a number of changes were made in the process. After implementing the new process, a further five procedures were mapped and timed again. In comparison to the original process, we achieved a reduction of 20% in the mean procedure time and a reduction of 42% in the number of steps from 66 to 37.

Calamus brandisii Becc. is one of the endemic slender rattans found in the Western Ghats of India. The genetic diversity of two main populations available in Kerala was investigated using 20 RAPD and 9 ISSR markers. Two parameters viz., gene diversity and genetic diversity within and among populations were analyzed. ISSR analysis showed quite high genetic diversity in Pandimotta compared to Bonacaud population whereas in RAPD markers both these populations were moderately diverse. The percentage of total genetic differentiation (Gst) among two populations is relatively higher than the mean Gst value indicating high genetic diversity within the populations. The genetic distance between these two populations was 0.1739 with ISSR markers and 0.1971 with RAPD markers. Because of its high genetic diversity, Pandimotta population can be treated as an important population of gene diversity with potentially useful genes. This may be included in the high priority reservoir for genetic conservation also.

A process used to prepare the test portion of ground wheat from the whole grain laboratory sample for ochratoxin A (OTA) analysis using dry comminution with homogenisation and sub-sampling via a rotary sample divider was developed and evaluated. With respect to OTA content, the developed process produced a homogeneous sample of ground wheat from 10 kg of whole grain. Relative standard deviations of the mean OTA concentration for five naturally contaminated wheat samples processed using the developed method ranged from 9% to 19% over a relevant concentration range of 1.7 to 7.6 mg/kg. Additional studies demonstrated that OTA was stable in ground wheat with moisture content between 12 to 13% for at least a year when stored at ambient temperatures. Further examination of the developed comminution and dividing procedure demonstrated that higher concentrations were measured in smaller sized particles, indicating that the accuracy and precision of OTA analyses could be affected by the particle size of ground wheat.

Reaction in a scalar mixing layer in grid-generated turbulence is studied experimentally by doping half of the flow with nitric oxide and the other half with ozone. The flow conditions and concentrations are such that the chemical reaction is passive and the flow and chemical timescales are of the same order. Conserved scalar theory for such flows is outlined and further developed; it is used as a basis for presentation of the experimental results. Continuous measurements of concentration are limited in their spatial and temporal resolution but capture sufficient of their spectra for adequate second-order correlations to be made. Two components of velocity have been measured simultaneously with hot-wire anemometry. Conserved scalar mixing results, deduced from reacting and non-reacting measurements of concentration, show the independence of concentration level and concentration ratio expected for passive reacting flow. The results are subject to several limitations due to the necessary experimental compromises, but they agree generally with measurements made in thermal mixing layers. Reactive scalar statistics are consistent with the realizability constraints obtainable from conserved scalar theory where such constraints apply, and otherwise are generally found to lie between the conserved scalar theory limits for frozen and very fast chemistry. It is suggested that Toor's (1969) closure for the mean chemical reaction rate could be improved by interpolating between the frozen and equilibrium values for the covariance. The turbulent fluxes of the reactive scalars are found to approximately obey the gradient model but the value of the diffusivity is found to depend on the Damköhler number.

Developed from the cross AC Watson/FP1043 made in 1995, Prairie Thunder was evaluated in the Flax Cooperative Trials (2002–2004) before being registered in 2006. Prairie Thunder's desirable combination of improved agronomic traits, seed quality and superior wilt (Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. f. sp. lini (Bolley) Snyder & Hansen) resistance should make this cultivar useful for producers and the flax industry.

Introduction: The controversy over the presence of empathic decline within the course in students of medicine, dentistry and health sciences in general, has not fully been studied. This controversy could be partially solved if massive studies of empathy levels are made in similar cultural, social and economic contexts.Material and Methods: Empathy levels within the course were studied in eighteen dental schools from six countries in Latin America (2013). The mean of the empathy levels were used to study the behavior between first and fifth academic years. The values of empathy levels within the course were observed by applying the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, the Spanish version. All these studies were cross-sectional. The value of means observed, were subjected to regression studies and further adjustment curves were obtained and the coefficient of determination were calculated.Results: Six different models of behavior were observed, which found that five of them suffer empathic decline within the course, but with different final results: in some the decline persists until the fifth academic year and in others, this decline ‘recovers’ persistently until the fifth academic year. The sixth model is characterized by a constant and persistent increase of levels of empathy within the course until the last academic year.Discussion: There are six different models for the behavior of means of levels of empathy within the course evaluated by a common methodology in eighteen dental schools from six countries of Latin America. These findings support the existence of variability of empathic response and a comprehensive approach is needed to find the causes that give rise to this variability.Conclusion: In dental students of Latin America, there is variability in the behavior of the distribution in means between the academic years of the dentistry schools examined in this study.

SummaryIndividual increase in inbreeding coefficients (ΔFi) has been recommended as an alternate measure of inbreeding. It can account for the differences in pedigree knowledge of individual animals and avoids overestimation due to increased number of known generations. The effect of inbreeding (F) and equivalent inbreeding (EF) calculated fromΔFi, on growth traits were studied in Nilagiri and Sandyno flocks of sheep. The study was based on data maintained at the Sheep Breeding Research Station, Sandynallah. The pedigree information and equivalent number of generations were less in Sandyno compared with Nilagiri sheep. The average F and EF for the Nilagiri population were 2.17 and 2.44, respectively and the corresponding values for Sandyno sheep were 0.83 and 0.84, respectively. The trend of inbreeding over years in both the populations indicated that EF was higher during earlier generations when pedigree information was shallow. Among the significant effects of inbreeding, the depression in growth per 1 percent increase in inbreeding ranged from 0.04 kg in weaning weight to 0.10 kg in yearling weight. In general, more traits were affected by inbreeding in Nilagiri sheep, in which greater regression of growth traits was noticed with F compared with EF. Higher values of EF than F in earlier generations in both the populations indicate that EF avoided the potential overestimation of inbreeding coefficient during recent generations. In the Sandyno population, the magnitude of depression noticed among growth traits with significant effects of inbreeding was higher. The differences in response to F and EF noticed in the two populations and possible causes for the trait wise differences in response to F and EF are appropriately discussed.
