This paper charts the history and debates surrounding the introduction of academic, university-based training of nurses in South Africa. This was a process that was drawn out over five decades, beginning in the late 1930s. For nurses, university training was an important part of a process of professionalization; however, for other members of the medical community, nursing was seen as being linked to women's service work. Using the case-study of the University of the Witwatersrand, one of South Africa's premier universities and the place in the country to offer a university-based nursing program, we argue that an historical understanding of the ways in which nursing education was integrated into the university system tells us a great deal about the professionalization of nursing. This paper also recognises, for the first time, the pioneers of this important process.

Казанович) и Ксения Милорадович: судьба, письма, творчество (авторы А.В. Востриков и Н.Х. Орлова), готовится к изданию третья. Автор рецензии высоко оценивает проект и его перспективы, а также отдает должное качеству архивно-библиографической работы, проделанной авторами первых двух книг серии. Представленные книги и в целом идея издательского проекта Парадигмы вносят серьезный вклад в исследование истории Санкт-Петербургского университета и истории высшего образования в России. При этом характер подачи материала и язык книг, живой и увлекательный, позволяют рекомендовать их не только исследователям, специализирующимся в данной тематике, но и широкому кругу читателей, интересующихся историей университетского образования, женщин-ученых и в целом историей России.As part of a new publishing project, the St. Petersburg almanac Paradigm started the production of a series of books on the history of the Higher Womens (Bestuzhev) Courses told through biographies of female students. In 2018, two books of the series were published: The Diary of a Living Being: From the Life of a Bestuzhevka (by N.Kh.Orlova), devoted to Evlalia P.Kazanovich, and Ksenia Miloradovich: Destiny, Letters, Creativity (by A.V. Vostrikov and N.Kh. Orlova), the third book of the series is being prepared for publication. The author of the review highly appreciates the project and its prospects, and the quality of archival and bibliographic work performed by the authors of the first two books of the series. The presented books and the whole idea of the publishing project developed by Paradigm make a serious contribution to the study of the history of St. Petersburg University and the history of higher education in Russia. In the diaries and correspondence of Miloradovich and Kazanovich, which are published for the first time, a significant place is occupied by teachers of the Bestuzhev Courses, wellknown scientists such as A.I.Vvedensky, E.L.Radlov, I.A.Shlyapkin. The biography of the heroines of the books reflects the era not only the joy of gaining opportunities for women to get a university education, to freely choose their own profession, but also revolutionary whirlwinds, political repression and personal losses. Their lives were intimately intertwined not only with the history of the Higher Womens (Bestuzhev) Courses, but also with the entire cultural life of Saint PetersburgPetrogradLeningrad. Much is said about the content of philosophical lectures in the prerevolutionary years, about the anxieties and hopes of their listeners. For the authors of the books who are closely associated with the university (Aleksey Vostrikov is incharge of the Bestuzhev library, Nadezhda Orlova studied in the building of the former Bestuzhev Courses, and later became a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy), this is also a fulfillment of a duty of memory. At the same time, the nature of the presentation of the material and the language of the books, lively and fascinating, allows recommending them not only to researchers specializing in this topic, but also to a wide circle of readers interested in the history of university education, women scientists and, in general, the history of Russia.

In the history of botany, Adam Zalužanský (d. 1613), a Bohemian physician, apothecary, botanist and professor at the University of Prague, is a little-known personality. Linnaeus's first biographers, for example, only knew Zalužanský from hearsay and suspected he was a native of Poland. This ignorance still pervades botanical history. Zalužanský is mentioned only peripherally or not at all. As late as the nineteenth century, a researcher would be unaware that Zalužanský’s main work Methodi herbariae libri tres actually existed in two editions from two different publishers (1592, Prague; 1604, Frankfurt). This paper introduces the life and work of Zalužanský. Special attention is paid to the chapter “De sexu plantarum” of Zalužanský’s Methodus, in which, more than one hundred years before the well-known De sexu plantarum epistola of R. J. Camerarius, the sexuality of plants is suggested. Additionally, for the first time, an English translation of Zalužanský’s chapter on plant sexuality is provided.

Electronic learning or online learning is a part of recent education which is dramatically used in universities all over the world. As well as the use and integration of e-learning is at the crucial stage in all developing countries. It is the most significant part of education that enhances and improves the educational system. This paper is to examine the hindrances that influence e-learning in Nigerian university system. In order to have an inclusive research, a case study research was performed in Evangel University, Akaeze, southeast of Nigeria. The paper demonstrates similar hindrances on country side. This research is a blend of questionnaires and interviews, the questionnaires was distributed to lecturers and an interview was conducted with management and information technology unit. Research had shown the use of e-learning in university education which has influenced effectively and efficiently the education system and that the University education in Nigeria is at the crucial stage of e-learning. Hence, some of the hindrances are avoiding unbeaten integration of e-learning. The aim of this research is to unravel the barriers that impede the integration of e-learning in universities in Nigeria. Nevertheless, e-learning has modified the teaching and learning approach but integration is faced with many challenges in Nigerian University.

SummaryThe Devonian brachiopod Tropidoleptus is recognized for the first time in South Africa. It is present in the lower part of the Witteberg Group at four widely separated localities. Data regarding the stratigraphical range of the genus elsewhere, combined with information on recently described fossil plants and vertebrates from underlying strata of the upper Bokkeveld Group, suggest that a Frasnian or even Givetian age is reasonable for the lower part of the Witteberg Group. The recognition of Tropidoleptus in a shallow water, near-shore, molluscan association, at the top of the South African marine Devonian sequence, is similar to its occurrence in Bolivia, and suggests a common Malvinokaffric Realm history of shallowing, prior to later Devonian or early Carboniferous non-marine sedimentation. It is noteworthy that Tropidoleptus is now known to occur in ecologically suitable environments around the Atlantic, but is absent from these same environments in Asia and Australia. Tropidoleptus is an excellent example of dispersal in geological time — first appearing in northern Europe and Nova Scotia, then elsewhere in eastern North America and North Africa, followed by South America and South Africa, while continuing in North America.

The inseparable connection between the life of the faculty and the university as a whole is demonstrated.

This article presents the results of the interdisciplinary collaboration of the authors, from their fields of research, to reflect on the guidelines of the three substantive functions of the university: training, research and extension, linked these last two with the social projection, to support the design of an architectural observatory at the Antonio Nari- ño University, Villavicencio headquarters, under the premise that a research scenario of this type, in addition to linking these functions offers a series of conditions and benefits in terms of the demands of university education and the role of the university in society.

Using the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa (TRC) and the concept of reconciliation as a case study, the article attempts to assess the knowledge and understanding of the registered undergraduate history students at the University of the Free State’s main campus about the TRC and the concept and process of reconciliation in the country at large. The research will firstly assess whether the younger generation of students, specifically students taking history as a subject, have any knowledge of such a significant and contemporary event in South African historiography as the TRC process. Secondly, in relation to the aims and recommendations of the TRC and against the background of reconciliation efforts in the country, to perceive the views and thoughts of undergraduate history students on the progress in reconciliation endeavours in South Africa. As a result, a sample of 128 undergraduate history students was randomly selected to complete a quantitative questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of both closed and open-ended questions. Group interviews, as a qualitative research method, were added and used to conduct interviews with 16 undergraduate history students selected randomly and answers were recorded. Accordingly, an explanatory mixed- method research method approach was employed by implementing both the qualitative and quantitative method.

On April 5, 1982 in her capacity as President of the South African Nursing Association, the author received a letter from the then Minister of Health. Dr. the Hon. L A P A Munnik to inform her that the Minister of Education had submitted the information to him that the Advisory Council of the Universities of South Africa had approved the principle whereby universities could develop an association with nursing colleges on the same lines as exist in respect of teacher training colleges, that is, as colleges external to the university but linked on an academic level to the university concerned.

AbstractThis article focuses on the work and efforts put forth by the University of Houston’s Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage program (Recovery) to create the first digital humanities center for US Latina/o Research: #usLdh. Recovery is a program to locate, preserve, and make available the written legacy of Latinas/os in the United States since colonial times until 1960. Through 27 years of successful work Recovery has not only been able to inscribe the excluded history of Latinas/os, but also has created an inclusive and vast digital repository that facilitates scholarship in this area of studies. This article focuses on the importance of recovery work in the writing, teaching, and understanding of history and considers how local personal archives have helped to fill in the gaps of mainstream history. We will detail the goals and challenges of this mission, as well as the importance of educating the community in digital methods that preserve and disseminate minority voices.
