Some mechanisms have been proposed to explain the role of bradykinin on glucose homeostasis and some studies reported that theBDKRB2+9/−9 polymorphism was associated to the transcriptional activity of the receptor. In this scenario, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the association of theBDKRB2+9/−9 polymorphism with diabetes mellitus risk in the Brazilian general population. This study included 1,032 subjects of the general urban population. Anthropometrical, blood pressure, biochemical, and genotype analyses for theBDKRB2+9/−9 bp insertion/deletion polymorphism were performed. Individuals carrying +9/+9 or +9/−9 genotypes had higher glucose values (84.5 mg/dL versus 80.6 mg/dL, resp.) and higher frequency of diabetes mellitus (7.6% versus 3.6%, resp.) compared to individuals carrying −9/−9, adjusting for age and gender. In addition, higher diabetes mellitus risk was associated to presence of the +9/+9 or +9/−9 genotypes (OR = 1.91; 95% CI = 1.09–4.19;P=0.03). Our data suggest that theBDKRB2+9/-9 polymorphism may act as a genetic modulator of glucose homeostasis. It was previously associated to insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, and insulin secretion, and, in this study, data suggest that the polymorphism may increase susceptibility to chronic metabolic conditions such as diabetes in the Brazilian population.

Online dating is becoming an increasingly used method for meeting significant others. As the research of lying behavior has advanced so has the technique of detecting the act of lying, especially in the online environment where deception is more likely to happen. The aim of this chapter is to simplify the perception of lying behavior to the general population and examine gender differences of lying behavior, namely, to verify whether one can observe a statistically significant difference in the speech behavior and exploitation of lying cues among men and women. The study shows correlation between gender and deception in online environment.

The relevance of the study of glycemic variability in patients with diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy is due to disability of the able-bodied population and high mortality against the background of the almost irreversible progression of diabetic nephropathy. The article highlights modern ideas about the influence of various factors on the occurrence of diabetic nephropathy and its course. The article is devoted to a review of current recommendations on diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy; the etiopathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy was described in detail. The role of the kidneys in glucose homeostasis, renal gluconeogenesis, and glucose reabsorption by the kidneys in healthy and in pathology is described. Detailed expositions of glycemic variability parameters, their changes in patients with diabetes mellitus depending on the stage of diabetic kidney damage are presented. The role of the kidneys in maintaining energy homeostasis, impaired glucose homeostasis in conditions of chronic kidney disease is described. We analyzed different options for insulin therapy, their advantages, and disadvantages in patients with diabetes mellitus with diabetic nephropathy. The presented material is extremely relevant for the development and implementation in the clinical practice of glycemic control methods to optimize treatment tactics, prevent the formation of microvascular complications, and early disability of patients with diabetes mellitus.

A study to assess the level of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among selected community, Coimbatore. Convenient sample of 50 samples were selected for this study. Data collection was conducted to assess the level of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus; it was assessed by using semi-structured questionnaire. Informational booklet was given to sample regarding diabetic management. It was concluded that general population had poor knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus because of uneducation and strong perception of diabetes mellitus.

Promoting health and well-being for older adults is a priority among many jurisdictions worldwide. Canada’s population is aging and becoming increasingly diverse; one axis of a diverse aging population is aging members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) communities. We sought to examine the lived experiences of older LGBTQ2S+ people in Canada to understand the barriers and facilitators to healthy aging among members of these communities. A total of 10 focus groups were held in 10 cities from across Canada. Sixty-one older LGBTQ2S+ people (Mean age = 67) participated in the study. Data were analyzed using a constructivist grounded theory approach. Through analysis, we identified themes related to the importance of community capacity, resources, resilience, and personal histories in shaping aging experiences. The findings highlight the importance acknowledging diverse sexual and gender identities and the role of the life course in developing and implementing approaches that promote healthy aging.

The frequent combination of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an important socially significant and far from being studied problem. However, only a few works are devoted to it. To solve this problem, we analyzed the possible pathogenetic mechanisms from the standpoint of the impact on glucose homeostasis of the main hormones — insular and contrainsular.The analysis was carried out using various literature databases, including Index Medicus, Scopus, Pub Med, Embase, Cochrane and others for the period, with rare exceptions, for 2000–2020, of which the works devoted directly to the aspect considered in this work were published in the last 5 years.The analysis revealed a mutual aggravating effect of COPD and T2DM, in which COPD plays an initiating role. It also revealed a significant role of counterinsular hormones, which largely determines the nature of the pathogenesis of T2DM in COPD.In addition, the article draws attention to the possible role of genetic factors that can be common for COPD and T2DM and have a significant role in the comorbidity of COPD and T2DM. The data obtained can be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the correction of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism in COPD, which is the lot of further research.
