Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the level of knowledge and awareness about metabolic syndrome (Met S) and its components among the 1st year physiotherapy students and also the difference in the level of knowledge and awareness among male and female students. Methods: A self-administered structured questionnaire consisting of 90 questions about components of Met S was distributed among 38 students studying 1st year physiotherapy at Apollo College of Physiotherapy, Hyderabad, after obtaining a written consent from them. The data extracted were tabulated, statistically analyzed and results were obtained. Results: Physiotherapy students have good knowledge about types and causes of diabetes and poor knowledge about symptoms, biochemical process, and complications of Met S. They expressed poor knowledge to understand the link between hypertension and pregnancy. They could understand the role of hereditary factors only in diabetes but not in other components. Conclusion: Met S is a common disorder in the society; therefore, the awareness should be raised among the student population and as paramedics, it is their responsibility to communicate with the public about the risk factors and complications associated with it and counsel them to adopt a healthy lifestyle to protect themselves from the complications.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major fast growing non-communicable disease (NCD) and causes threats to global public health. Prior to initiating an educational program or interventions for diabetic patients, their current level of knowledge (K), attitude (A), and practice (P) should be evaluated. The purpose of this study was thus to determined current diabetes-related knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of adults with Diabetes mellitus..Methods: Current study was cross sectional study from August to December 2014 in medicine outpatient department of Tertiary care hospital of Bhopal. A semi‑structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection, and it consisted of four sections. Results: A total of 150 study participants were enrolled for the study. Among them, 58% were male and 425 were female diabetic patients. Around 16% of the participants having good level of knowledge, 34.6% of participants have poor knowledge and 49.3% having moderate knowledge. Out of the total participant 43.3% have positive attitude and only 34% patients had positive practice. Conclusions: In our study most of the patients belong to moderate and poor knowledge score as well as negative practice and negative attitude that emphasizes the need for increasing diabetes awareness activities. The efforts should be more focussed on female patients, younger patients and those who have no family history of diabetes.

Some mechanisms have been proposed to explain the role of bradykinin on glucose homeostasis and some studies reported that theBDKRB2+9/−9 polymorphism was associated to the transcriptional activity of the receptor. In this scenario, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the association of theBDKRB2+9/−9 polymorphism with diabetes mellitus risk in the Brazilian general population. This study included 1,032 subjects of the general urban population. Anthropometrical, blood pressure, biochemical, and genotype analyses for theBDKRB2+9/−9 bp insertion/deletion polymorphism were performed. Individuals carrying +9/+9 or +9/−9 genotypes had higher glucose values (84.5 mg/dL versus 80.6 mg/dL, resp.) and higher frequency of diabetes mellitus (7.6% versus 3.6%, resp.) compared to individuals carrying −9/−9, adjusting for age and gender. In addition, higher diabetes mellitus risk was associated to presence of the +9/+9 or +9/−9 genotypes (OR = 1.91; 95% CI = 1.09–4.19;P=0.03). Our data suggest that theBDKRB2+9/-9 polymorphism may act as a genetic modulator of glucose homeostasis. It was previously associated to insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, and insulin secretion, and, in this study, data suggest that the polymorphism may increase susceptibility to chronic metabolic conditions such as diabetes in the Brazilian population.

Background: Inadequate knowledge and misconceptions about tuberculosis (TB) contribute to the burden of the disease by influencing patients’ behavior and attitude towards the disease and undermining infection control efforts. This study assesses the level of knowledge, attitude and perception of TB and its management among TB-infected patients. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional was used to interview 712 TB patients using a semi-structured questionnaire between June and October 2016. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed with SPSS version 20.Results: About 70% had a good knowledge of TB. Patients’ perception of stigma was high (37.5%). A high proportion of the patients had a poor perception of their illness (88%). Healthcare workers attitude was rated as satisfactory by 97.2% of respondents. Patients who had good knowledge about TB experienced high self-stigma (42%) compared to those who had poor knowledge (27.2%), p<0.05. Poor knowledge of TB was highest among relapse TB cases. Respondents with poor TB knowledge were less likely to be male (OR: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.95), married (OR: 0.24; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.55; p=0.001) and have tertiary education (OR: 0.06; CI: 0.37, 0.87; p=0.010). Patients with good knowledge about HIV and in the richest wealth status were 91% less likely to have high perceived stigma (OR: 0.09, 95%CI: 0.02, 0.35; p=0.001).Conclusions: The level of knowledge of TB among patients is satisfactory, however perception of illness is poor. Tuberculosis diagnosis can create self-stigma because of the fear of being isolated and discriminated which may determine the success of treatment.
