The viscous damping force in the mixed form asfd(x˙)=c1x˙+c2|x˙|x˙can well describe damping characteristics of isolators and dampers in many cases. In this paper, performance characteristics of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) linear-stiffness isolators with mixed and piecewise mixed viscous damping are analytically examined under harmonic base excitation. Based on the first-order harmonic balance method (HBM), both relative and absolute displacement transmissibility expressions with the equivalent linear damping coefficient (ELDC) are given. And the analytical calculations show good agreement with the numerical results. Also, the influence of nonlinear damping on the response characteristics is investigated by comparing the transmissibility of linear and nonlinear systems. The resonant frequency always shifts to a lower value as the nonlinear damping component of the forcefd(x˙)=c1x˙+c2|x˙|x˙becomes stronger, and when the damping ratio in the corresponding linear model is relatively high, the relative transmissibility decreases at frequencies higher than the resonance frequency of the corresponding linear damping system and the absolute one increases for the frequency ratios above2. Finally, the displacement transmissibility of a nonlinear isolator with piecewise mixed viscous damping is discussed and the process shows research similarity with the non-piecewise case.

This paper discusses the performance characteristics of single degree-of-freedom vibration isolation systems in which the isolator damping force is proportional to the relative velocity across the isolator raised to an arbitrary power. The concept of equivalent viscous damping is employed to develop a general equation for the equivalent viscous damping ratio which is used to determine approximate isolation system response parameters. A range of isolator damping nonlinearity is studied by varying the relative velocity exponent between 0.5 and 5 for a fixed value of damping. Detailed results for parametric variations in damping are presented for specific values of the relative velocity exponent that correspond to Coulomb, viscous, quadratic, and cubic damping mechanisms.

This paper presents the damping characteristics of a linear magneto-rheological (MR) damper with dual controllable ducts based on numerical and experimental analysis. The novel MR damper consisting of a dual-rod cylinder system and a MR valve is used to reduce the influences of viscous damping force and improve dynamic range. Driven by the dual-rod cylinder system, MR fluid flows in the MR valve. The pressure drop of the MR valve with dual independent controllable ducts can be controlled by tuning the current of two independent coils. Based on the mathematical model and the finite element method, the damping characteristics of the MR damper is simulated. A prototype is designed and tested on MTS machine to evaluate its damping characteristics. The results show that the working states and damping force of the MR damper can be controlled by the two independent coils.

A theoretical method is derived for predicting the linearized response characteristics of constant deadrise high-speed planing boats in head and following waves. Comparisons of the theoretical predictions of the pitch and heave response amplitude operators and phase angles with existing experimental data show reasonably good agreement for a wide variety of conditions of interest. It appears that nonlinear effects are more severe at a speed to length ratio of 6 than of, say, 4 or less, principally because of the reduction of the damping ratio of the boat with increasing speed, and the consequent increase in motions in the vicinity of the resonant encounter frequency. However, it is concluded that the linear theory can provide a simple and fast means of determining the effect of various parameters such as trim angle, deadrise, loading, and speed on the damping, natural frequency, and linearized response in waves, and that this can furnish valuable insight into the actual boat dynamics, even though the accurate predictions of large motions and peak accelerations would require a nonlinear analysis.

Research on nonlinear dynamic response of passive vibration isolator, which was excited by foundation vibration and isolated by viscoelastic material was done. Nonlinear stiffness was expressed by the cubic polynomial function of deformation and nonlinear damping was characterized by viscoelastic fractional derivative operator. Then the fractional derivative nonlinear dynamic equation of passive vibration isolator was established. The dynamic response characteristics were analyzed by harmonic balance method and the frequency response equation and amplitude-frequency curve were obtained, and furthermore, the influence of nonlinearity on system was analyzed. Finally, the stability and the stable interval of the periodic solution were argued by the Floquet theory. The result s indicates that the proposed equation can precisely describe the dynamic characteristics of viscoelastic vibration isolator. The ignorance of nonlinearity of stiffness and damping will result in obvious error. The proposed method provides theoretic reference for design of viscoelastic isolator and the evaluation of its effect.

Current applications of gas film bearings in high-speed oil-free micro-turbomachinery (<0.4 MW) require calibrated predictive tools to successfully deploy their application to mass-produced systems, for example oil-free turbochargers. The present investigation details the linear rotordynamic analysis of a test rotor supported on externally pressurized gas bearings. Model predictions are compared with the test rotordynamic response determined through comprehensive experiments conducted on a small rotor supported on three lobed hybrid (hydrostatic/hydrodynamic) rigid gas bearings. Predictions for the rotor-bearing system synchronous response to imbalance show good agreement with measurements during rotor coast downs, and manifest a decrease in damping ratio as the level of external pressurization increases. The rotor-bearing eigenvalue analysis forwards natural frequencies in accordance with the measurements, and null damping ratios evidence the threshold speeds of rotordynamic instability. Estimated whirl frequency ratios are typically 50% of rotor speed, thus predicting sub synchronous instabilities at lower rotor speeds than found experimentally when increasing the magnitude of feed pressurization. Rationale asserting the nature of the discrepancies calls for further analysis.

Nonlinear vibrations of an elastic structure coupled with liquid sloshing in a square tank subjected to vertical sinusoidal excitation are investigated. Previous studies examined the vibrations of a structure coupled with only one sloshing mode in a rectangular tank. However, square tanks are expected to work more efficiently as a vibration suppression device (Tuned Liquid Damper, TLD) because two sloshing modes, (1,0) and (0,1) modes, simultaneously appear when the internal resonance ratio 2:1:1 is satisfied. In reality, it is impossible to build a perfectly square tank. Therefore, a nearly square liquid tank is also considered when the tuning condition is slightly deviated. In the theoretical analysis, the fluid in the tank is assumed to be perfect. The modal equations of motion for seven sloshing modes are derived using Galerkin’s method, considering the nonlinear terms. The linear damping terms are then incorporated into the modal equations to consider the damping effect of sloshing. The frequency response curves are determined using van der Pol’s method (based on the harmonic balance method). From these response curves, the influences of the liquid level, the aspect ratio of the tank cross section, and the deviation of the tuning condition are investigated. For a square tank it is found that (1,0) and (0,1) modes are nonlinearly coupled. When the liquid level is high, there are three patterns for sloshing: (I) both (1,0) and (0,1) sloshing modes appear at identical amplitudes; (II) these two modes appear at different amplitudes; and (III) either (1,0) or (0,1) mode appears. Compared with the performance of a rectangular TLD, a square TLD works more efficiently when the liquid level is low. Small deviations of the tuning condition may cause amplitude modulated motion to appear. Bifurcation sets are also calculated to illustrate the influence of the system parameters on the performance of the TLD. Experiments were also conducted in order to confirm the validity of the theoretical results. These results were in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract This study of the behavior of non-linear stiffness systems with variable preload displacements and constant amplitude decay ratios showed that the energy loss per cycle is dependent on these preload displacements. By introducing a non-linear damping force, which is a function of both displacement and velocity, the associated work per cycle can be made approximately the same function of the preload displacement as is the case for the energy loss. In this manner, it becomes possible to make the resulting damping coefficient essentially independent of the preload displacement. This new damping model was incorporated into the mathematical description of an over-running sprag clutch. Confirming experimentation showed very good agreement with computed results.

The paper proposes a new variable friction system, of which the friction force can increase linearly with the displacement of system. This new system can be used in TMD to avoid the disadvantage of Coulomb friction TMD. Using first order harmonic balance method, the equivalent damping ratio and frequency of SDOF variable friction system is deduced and analyzed. The frequency response characteristics of SDOF variable friction system is discussed. The control effectiveness of variable friction TMD under harmonic excitation is analyzed theoretically. The results demonstrate that the frequency response curves of variable friction TMD and classically damped TMD are similar and both can effectively reduce structural response under harmonic excitation.

Damping elements are used in ships and offshore structures as response reduction devices for maintaining the hydrodynamic response within acceptable limits. The use of such elements so far has been based on past experience or using empirical based design approach. An investigation of the wave excitation forces acting on these structures with and without damping elements may give an insight into the damping effects of such elements. Also understanding the flow pattern and the magnitude of flow variation around these elements may be useful to improve the design methods. In the present study, measurement of damping forces and response were carried out to establish the relationship between wave frequency amplitude and damping ratio. It was observed that the damping varies with wave period non-linearly and linearly with wave height. Also it was observed that increase in added mass combined with viscous damping is a key factor for the effectiveness of heave plates in reducing motion response of spar platforms. Of the various configurations tested, the spar with double heave plate at the bottom has higher damping compared to other configurations.

The linear and nonlinear damping performance of a common type of gas-turbine vibration isolator, consisting of a squeeze-film journal bearing in parallel with a linear retainer spring, is computed and used to prescribe limits to the use of linear damping coefficients.
