The different Na contents (0 ≤ Na ≤ 0.35, based on mole of NaOH) of doped Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3(BST) powders synthesized via sol-gel process were studied. The substitution of Na+ions into a partial A-site of BST powders provided the reduction in vacancy defects as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-visible spectroscopy. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra appeared in violet, blue, and green emissions. The phase structure, oxygen deficiency, and titanium deficiency of BST powders were further investigated as a function of Na content. X-ray diffraction (XRD) result was found that low Na content (0 ≤ Na ≤ 0.15) exhibited the tetragonal structure, while it was transformed to the cubic phase when high Na content. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result revealed that the partial oxidation of Ti3+ions to Ti4+ions was observed at Na content lower than 0.05 mole, while more addition of Na content resulted in the increasing of the oxygen and the titanium deficiency. Furthermore, the result indicated the oxygen deficiency significantly formed at the A-site of Sr atoms more than that of Ba atoms.

Abstract Vanadium dioxides are strongly correlated systems which undergo an insulator-metal transition (IMT) from a low-temperature semiconducting phase to a high-temperature metallic phase. Among them, Vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes IMT close to room temperature, accompanied by a structural transition resulting change of several orders of magnitude in the electrical and optical properties. Here, we present the synthesis of VO2 by sol-gel process which employs cost-effective precursors to synthesize pure phase of VO2 thin films. The synthesized thin films were characterized using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm phase purity and high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM) to study the crystallite and particle size for the synthesized films. The film’s surface was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the valence state and chemical composition of vanadium dioxide.

Thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction results and the humidity sensing properties of poly(vanadium–molybdenum acid) H2V9.5Mo2.5O32.0 · 8.8H2O xerogel thin films, which were fabricated by the sol-gel process, are described in this paper. The conductance and the capacitance of the thin films strongly depend on the relative humidity. Different electrodes have different influences on the humidity-sensing properties of the thin films.

The compounds Bi2Mo1-xWxO6 (x = 0.0, 0.2, and 0.4) were obtained through a Citrate sol-gel process. Thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques were used for characterization. Reitveld refinement of the XRD data confirmed the crystal structure of all the compositions to be orthorhombic, having Pca21 space group. XPS studies indicated the presence of +6 as well as +4 oxidation state for Mo. Surface acid enrichment of all the catalysts was done and monitored by NH3-TPD studies. Partial oxidation of propylene was studied over all the compounds. The W doping was found to increase the catalytic activity. Moreover, as-prepared catalysts and acid enriched catalysts were compared for their catalytic activity wherein, acid-enriched catalysts showed the improved conversion of propylene without hampering the product selectivity profile. Black TiO2 with doped nitrogen and modified carbon (b-N-TiO2/C) were successfully prepared by sol-gel method in the presence of urea as a source of nitrogen and carbon. The photocatalysts were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The doped nitrogen, introduced defects, and modified carbon played a synergistic role in enhancing photocatalytic activity of b-N-TiO2/C for the degradation of chlorophyll-a in algae cells. The sample, with a proper amount of phase composition and oxygen vacancies, showed the highest efficiency to degrade chlorophyll-a, and the addition of H2O2 promoted this photocatalysis degradation. Based on the trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) signals, a photocatalytic mechanism of b-N-TiO2/C was proposed. In the photocatalytic degradation of chlorophyll-a, the major reactive species were identified as OH and O2−. This research may provide new insights into the photocatalytic inactivation of algae cells by composite photocatalysts.

AbstractThe SiO2/TiO2/Nb2O5 material was set by the sol–gel method and was characterized by several techniques through thermogravimetric, spectroscopic, and textural analyzes. For the two synthesized materials, the specific surface area was 350.0 and 494.0 m2 g−1 (SiTiNb-A and SiTiNb-B, respectively). An enhance of the crystalline order with the temperature increase of the thermal treatment was observed. Through X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis, the binding energy values for the Ti 2p and Nb 3d levels showed the insertion of Ti and Nb atoms in the silica matrix. The Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy analyses also confirmed the high dispersion of the metals presented on the materials surface. The Thermogravimetric Analysis showed weight loss for the of 37.6% (SiTiNb-A) and 29.7% (SiTiNb-B). The presence of the crystalline phases TiO2-anatase and monoclinic-Nb2O5 in the materials was confirmed through the data obtained by association of powder X-ray Diffraction and FT-Raman. Values obtained from optical band-gap aimed the dependence of the oxides concentration and the calcination temperature. Finally, the pyridine adsorption studies have indicated the presence of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites.

Zn2SiO4:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphors have been prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and ddifferential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR spectra and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The results of XRD indicated that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1000oC. In Zn2SiO4:Eu3+,Dy3+ phosphors, the Eu3+ and Dy3+ show their characteristic red(613nm, 5D0-7F2), blue (481nm, 4F9/2–6H15/2) and yellow (577nm, 4F9/2–6H13/2) emissions.

ABSTRACTStudies of the mixed-metal interface in metal impregnated alumina have indicated the possibility of much metal-metal and metal-substrate interaction. Studies were carried out on NiCu/Al2O3 system which was evaluated to develop a better understanding of the forces that drive modification of the catalytic selectivity of Ni in the presence of Cu. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), Powder X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and theoretical calculations were carried out on this bimetallic system, using Ni,Ag/Al2O3 as a reference as Ni shows negligible electron perturbation on co-adsorbance with Ag onto alumina. XRD results indicate that gross modification of the electronic fields of Ni and Cu are due to direct coupling and intercalation into the alumina matrix. As a result of this phenomena, these materials may form a good base for the development of novel ceramics based on mixed-metal interactions where the intermetallic perturbations are driven by the substrate effects.

Mn, Fe doped ZnO powders (Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2, x≤0.05) were synthesized by an ameliorated sol-gel method, using Zn(CH3COO)2, Mn(CH3COO)2and FeCl2as the raw materials, with the addition of vitamin C as a kind of chemical reducer. The resulting powder was subsequently compacted under pressure of 10 MPa at the temperature of 873K in vacuum. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2powder and bulk samples have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study chemical valence of manganese, iron and zinc in the samples. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O (x≤0.05) samples were single phase with the ZnO-like wurtzite structure. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that Fe and Mn existed in Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2samples in Fe2+and Mn2+states. The results of VSM experiment proved the room temperature ferromagnetic properties (RTFP) of Mn, Fe co-doped ZnO samples.

ABSTRACTNd substituted bismuth titanate Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 were synthesized by sol-gel process and thin films were deposited on Pt substrate (Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si) by spin coating. Thin films, characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, shows complete solid solution up to the composition x < 1. Initial results indicate that the ferroelectric polarization increases with increasing Nd content in the film with 2Pr = 50μC/cm2 for x = 0.46, which may have application in non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices.
