A compact printed MIMO antenna for mobile terminals is presented. With two planar antenna elements, the −6 dB impedance bandwidth of 2.32 GHz (1.48–3.8 GHz) is obtained, which covers GSM 1800/1900, UMTS, WLAN, Wimax, S-band, and most of LTE bands. Each antenna element with a small occupation of 15 × 20 mm2consists of a driven strip and a shorted strip. Two inverted C-shaped ground branches are introduced between two elements to improve the isolation. The simulated results are studied and the measured results show that high isolation of more than 18 dB at the entire operating band is achieved. Meanwhile, the impedance performance is also improved by adding the branches. Furthermore, the measured radiation performances and envelope correlation coefficient also demonstrate that the proposed antenna could be a good candidate for mobile terminals.

A 2 × 2 MIMO antenna for metal-housing mobile handset application is proposed in this article. The polarization diversity is used to arrange the two antennas’ setup. The asymmetric U-shaped nonuniform slot antenna provides two different resonant bands are designed to be operated in long term evolution (LTE) covers lower band (698 MHz to 960 MHz) and upper band (1710 MHz to 2700 MHz). The modified type III balun is used for upper-operating band, and the open stub is used for lower-operating band, good impedance bandwidth, and radiated pattern and efficiency are shown. The isolation (S21) between the antennas is more than 20 dB, and the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.02. A prototype of the proposed antenna chiselling in the metal-housing mobile handset (with 160 mm in length, 10 mm in height, and 70 mm in width) is fabricated and experimentally studied.

With the development of 5G, Internet of Things, and smart home technologies, miniaturized and compact multi-antenna systems and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna arrays have attracted increasing attention. Reducing the coupling between antenna elements is essential to improving the performance of such MIMO antenna system. In this work, we proposed a graphene-assembled, as an alternative material rather than metal, film-based MIMO antenna array with high isolation for 5G application. The isolation of the antenna element is improved by a graphene assembly film (GAF) frequency selective surface and isolation strip. It is shown that the GAF antenna element operated at 3.5 GHz has the realized gain of 2.87 dBi. The addition of the decoupling structure improves the isolation of the MIMO antenna array to more than 10 dB and corrects the antenna radiation pattern and operating frequency. The isolation between antenna elements with an interval of 0.4λ is above 25 dB. All experimental results show that the GAF antenna and decoupling structure are efficient devices for 5G mobile communication.

This paper presents a close-spaced dual-band 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with high isolation based on half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW). The dual-band operation of the antenna element is achieved by loading a rectangular patch outside the radiating aperture of an HMSIW cavity. The HMSIW cavity is excited by a coaxial probe, whereas the rectangular patch is energized through proximity coupling by the radiating aperture of HMSIW. The antenna elements can be closely placed using the rotation and orthogonal arrangement for a 2 × 2 array. Small neutralization lines at the center of the MIMO antenna can increase the isolation among its elements by around 10 dB in the lower band and 5 dB in the higher band. A prototype of the MIMO antenna is fabricated and its performance is measured. The measured results show that the resonant frequencies are centered at 4.43 and 5.39 GHz with bandwidths of 110 and 80 MHz and peak gains of 6 and 6.4 dBi, respectively. The minimum isolation in both bands is greater than 35 dB. The envelope correlation coefficient is lower than 0.005 within two operating bands.

A wideband dual-polarized planar antenna is designed and analyzed by using the theory of characteristic modes (TCM). The eigenvalue, eigencurrent, characteristic pattern, and modal weighting coefficient are analyzed to bring physical insight to this kind of antenna. The results demonstrate that there are two modes resonant in the operating band for each polarization, which have been combined to form a wider frequency band. A bandwidth of 60.2% (1.72–3.2 GHz) for VSWR < 1.5 with high isolation of 32 dB is achieved simultaneously. The size of the radiator structure is 0.33λ0× 0.33λ0× 0.22λ0(λ0refers to the center operating frequency).

A novel compact multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system operating from 5 to 7.3 GHz is proposed for wireless applications. It comprises of two similar antennas with microstrip feeding and radiating patches developed on a reduced ground plane. The developed antenna system resonates at a dual-band of 5.4 and 6.8 GHz frequencies, giving an impedance bandwidth of 38% (based on S11 < −10 dB). The unique structure of the proposed MIMO system gives a reduced mutual coupling of −27 dB at 5.4 GHz resonant frequency and −19 dB at 6.8 GHz resonant frequency and in the entire operating band the coupling is maintained well below −16 dB. The envelope correlation coefficient of the proposed MIMO system is calculated and is found to be less than 0.05 in the operating band. The measured and simulation results are found in good agreement.

Wide-band circularly polarized multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna array with a 2 × 4 feed network was proposed for C-band application. Different unique techniques were utilized in the proposed array to enhance the antenna characteristics, such as gain, 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW), impedance tuning, and ruinous mutual coupling effects. A miniaturized dual-feed Tai chi-shaped antenna element with a pair of feeding points and a pair of eyebrow-shaped strips was presented for enhancing circular polarization (CP) purity and impedance matching. For a better improvement of CP features, a 2*4 MIMO sequentially rotated (MIMO-SR) feed network was used to achieve broader 3 dB ARBW. Besides, the MIMO feature of the feed network could control the left- and right-handed CP, respectively. Ultimately, specific forms of slot and slit structures were applied onto the top layer of MIMO feed network that provided a high isolation between the radiating elements and array network. Furthermore, the diversity gain (DG) was studied. The extracted measured results illustrated an impedance bandwidth of 3.5–8.2 GHz at port 1 and 3.5–8.3 GHz at port 2 for VWSR < 2 and 3 dB ARBW of 4.6–7.6 GHz at port 1 and 4.6–7.5 GHz at port 2. The peak gain of 9.9 dBi was at 6 GHz.

This paper presents a long-term evolution (LTE) 700 MHz band multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna, and high isolation between the two symmetrical antenna elements is obtained without introducing extra decoupling structure. Each antenna element is a combination antenna of PIFA and a meander monopole antenna. The end of the PIFA and the meander monopole antenna are, respectively, overlapped with the 50 Ω microstrip feed line, the two overlapping areas produce additional capacitance which can be considered decoupling structures to enhance the isolation for the MIMO antenna, as well as the impedance matching of the antenna elements. The MIMO antenna is etched on FR4 PCB board with dimensions of 71 × 40 × 1.6 mm3; the edge-to-edge separation of the two antenna elements is only nearly 0.037 λat 700 MHz. Both simulation and measurement results are used to confirm the MIMO antenna performance; the operating bandwidth is 698–750 MHz withS11≤−6 dB andS21≤−23 dB.

A multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna with improved isolation using an interdigital split ring resonator (SRR) is proposed. The necessary impedance bandwidth is obtained by utilizing the coupling between the meander strip and an invertedLstrip. Using interdigital SRR, a negative permeability was generated, while achieving improved isolation between the two radiating elements. The fabricated antenna satisfies the 10 dB return loss in the long-term evolution (LTE) band 40 from 2.3 GHz to 2.4 GHz. The measured peak gains of the two elements were 2.0 dBi and 1.3 dBi. The measured envelope correlation coefficient was less than 0.16 over the frequency band of interest.
