Liver injuries caused by high voltage electricity are rare and result in high mortality and morbidity. They are produced by the resistance to the passage of electrical current through the tissue, which creates heat that leads to coagulation necrosis and rupture of the cell membrane. We present a case of an electrical injury to the liver, diagnosed by ultrasound and CT in a 39-year-old man who presented with skin burns on his right hand and right hemiabdomen. Injuries occurred after the contact with 220 kV high voltage electricity.

Background: We report a case of different types of maculopathy in eyes after a high-voltage electrical shock injury. Case Report: A 43-year-old male suffered high-voltage electrical injury through his left arm. He underwent cataract surgery in both eyes 3 months after the injury, but there was no vision improvement. Ocular examination, including spectral domain optical coherence tomography, revealed diffuse retinal atrophy in the left eye which did not change until the final visit. In the right eye, an impending macular hole was observed but regressed spontaneously 9 months after the injury, and the visual acuity improved to 20/32 at the final visit. Conclusion: Two different types of maculopathy can occur in each eye after high-voltage electrical shock injury, and this might be due to asymmetric pathogenesis of the eyes according to the proximity to the route of electrical current.

Though responsible for just 4% of burn centre admissions, electrical injuries present in a myriad of ways. From small, innocuous, partial-thickness injuries on the fingertip, to a high-voltage injury requiring amputation and complex reconstruction, the burn surgeon must be equipped with the knowledge and skill to deal with such varying injuries. This chapter describes the epidemiology of electrical injury and the pathophysiology of electrical current passing through the patient. The management of high- and low-voltage wounds is described, as is the treatment of the systemic effects of the electrical injury.

AbstractAcute brain infarct is an uncommon complication of electrical injury, and only a few cases have been reported. A young man sustained a high-voltage electrical injury followed by a fall from height. Imaging revealed right hemibrain infarct. He was operated for that, but did not make much progress. Electric shock injury with the high-voltage current even for short period of contact may cause massive infarction of brain, and prognosis remains dismal.

Purpose: This is a case report of a male patient who suffered a high-voltage electrical burn and presented with bilateral pigmentary retinopathy. Methods: A 40-year-old man presented with bilateral vision loss following a high-voltage electrical injury sustained 10 years earlier. Family history, ocular history, and anterior segment evaluation were unremarkable. Results: Fundus examination revealed bilateral optic disc pallor, widespread areas of chorioretinal atrophy, and pigmentary changes surrounding the optic disc that partially involved the macula with some spared areas located on the superior retina. Conclusions: Retinal manifestations following a high-voltage electrical injury can resemble other hereditary and inflammatory diseases with similar clinical patterns, therefore, a meticulous family, medical, and clinical evaluation is essential.

Autoimmune diseases can have a widespread effect throughout the system and can cause high mortality and morbidity, depending on their involvement in the abdominal organs and systems. Most of the abdominal organs are damaged as a result of the direct or/ and indirect effects of autoimmune diseases. Therefore, abdominal surgeries should be performed to eliminate any complications related to these effects. There could be a significant relationship between abdominal surgery and autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases. The aim of this study was to reveal the possible relationship between autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases that cause significant mortality and morbidity. In this way, we further aimed at increasing the awareness of clinicians on this subject, along with providing them with the related publications on autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases and abdominal surgery. Taking all these into consideration, autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases can also influence the abdominal organs. The influence may be directly related to the involvement of the organ and system as a result of the autoimmune disease or indirectly related to the influence of the organs and systems. Such influence leading to complications may require urgent or elective abdominal surgery, which can further cause high mortality and morbidity. Therefore, it is significant for all clinicians, especially surgeons, to be aware of the relationship between autoimmune diseases and abdominal surgery. The early detection and treatment of the complications related to the abdominal involvement of autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases could decrease mortality and morbidity.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) type 2 is the causative agent of acute hemorrhagic enteritis and high mortality in the affected dogs. Numerous studies have been done to understand the origin of the virus and to exhibit new variants and circulating strains. This report describes the detection and genomic characterization of CPV strains from indoor and outdoor dogs in Ankara, Turkey. Samples were sent to our laboratory due to clinical symptoms in puppies. We tested blood and swab samples to determine the presence of canine parvovirus (CPV) in three puppies and two adult dogs by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using VP2 (capsid protein) region primers of canine parvoviruses. Following that, to provide molecular characterization data Maximum Likelihood (ML) method was used for phylogenetic analyses. Constructed phylogenetic trees from the aligned nucleotide sequences revealed that our CPV strains demonstrated high genetic similarities, with 100% identity match on nucleotide alignments with each other and classified in CPV-2b genotypes.They have placed on a monophyletic clade as a sister branch with CPV VAC S quantum with 98.9% nucleotide homology. Our findings suggest that CPV-2b is actual and frequently seen variant in Turkey and shows high similarities with other CPV variants and a bit less with FPVs in Turkey and around the world. CPV causes high mortality and morbidity in dogs and to develop effective vaccines for protection of dogs in Turkey where there are few numbers of studies that have been done, field strains should be isolated and characterised.

Mammarenavirus genus groups viruses causing human haemorrhagic diseases, including the New World (NW) Junín virus (JUNV), and the Old World (OW) viruses Lassa (LASV), among others. The high mortality and morbidity rates associated to pathogenic mammarenaviruses, the absence of vaccines and the constant threat of new emerging species, make these viruses a public health concern in endemic areas. Autophagy is a widely-known intracellular metabolic pathway involved in maintaining the cellular homeostasis in response to several stress conditions.

Veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is one of the complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation that can also be caused by high-dose chemotherapy. This complication can lead to high mortality following bone marrow transplantation. It is more common after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, and is rare after autologous stem cell transplantation. While mild cases of VOD may reduce over a period of a few weeks, very severe cases can cause multi-organ damage, which has a high mortality. is therefore required with early diagnosis and treatment of this complication. In this paper, we present a sever VOD case after autologous stem cell transplantation, that was treated successfully with Defibrotide. The patient was a 14-month-old girl who has neuroblastoma with bone metastasis. VOD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients who present with unexplained liver injuries, ascites and/or multi organ failure. Recipients of haematopoeitic stem cell transplantation who present with unexplained liver injuries, ascites and/or multi organ failure should have VOD considered in their differential diagnosis. If there is severe VOD diagnosed, then Defibrotide could be an option for treatment.
