We propose a wide bandwidth antenna with a circular polarization for universal Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader applications. To achieve a wide 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth, three T-shaped microstrip lines are inserted into the ground plane. The measured impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 480 MHz and extends from 660 to 1080 MHz, and the 3 dB AR bandwidth is 350 MHz and extends from 800 to 1155 MHz. The radiation pattern is a bidirectional pattern with a maximum antenna gain of 3.67 dBi. The overall size of the proposed antenna is 114 × 114 × 0.8 mm3.

This study presents a novel compact circularly polarized antenna for universal ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) handheld reader applications. The antenna is composed of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) L-shaped feedline mounted at the right edge of the square slot at the bottom of the ground plane to realize a circular polarization; a horizontal stub protruded from the right side of the square slot towards the slot centre, and a vertical stub is mounted at the lower left of the square slot. The designed antenna printed on one ground plane layer of a low-cost FR4 substrate with an overall size of 120×120×1.6 mm3. The measurement results show indicate that the fabricated antenna achieves a wide axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 460 MHz (818–1278 MHz), wide impedance bandwidth of 54.6% (630–1103 MHz), and a measured peak gain of 4.0 dBi. The proposed antenna is a good candidate for compact universal UHF RFID handheld reader applications (840–960 MHz).

A compact, square shaped microstrip fractal antenna with asymmetrical pairs of T-slits for circularly polarized (CP) radiation and radio frequency identification (RFID) reader applications is proposed and experimentally investigated. Design is based on narrow slit modified Minkowski island fractal geometry. Circular polarization along with size reduction is achieved by inserting four symmetrical pairs of T-slits at the square patch boundary of the single-probe-feed radiator. Proposed geometry is tuned at resonant frequency of 914 MHz by optimization of dimensions of the two T-slits. Compactness of the antenna is achieved by increasing the overall sizes of the slits. Antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate with a size of 47.2×47.2×1.6 mm3 (0.143λ0 X 0.143λ0 X 0.005λ0) and tested to validate the simulated results. The 3-dB axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth and impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna design are found to be 7 MHz (911-918 MHz) and 24 MHz (909-933 MHz) respectively. A design equation is develped based on the parametric study that can be used to design a compact antenna with CP for UHF RFID applications covering the frequency range from 887 to 1023 MHz.

This paper presents a passive cavity type Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag antenna having the longest read-range, and compares it with existing long-range UHF RFID tag antenna. The study also demonstrates mathematically and experimentally that our proposed longest-range UHF RFID cavity type tag antenna has a longer read-range than existing passive tag antennas. Our tag antenna was designed with 140 × 60 × 10 mm3 size, and reached 26 m measured read-range and 36.3 m mathematically calculated read-range. This UHF tag antenna can be applied to metal and non-metal objects. By adding a further sensing capability, it can have a great benefit for the Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless sensor networks (WSN).

This research proposes a single-fed broadband circularly polarized (CP) bidirectional antenna operable in 840–960 MHz frequency band for readers of universal UHF-RFID applications. The proposed antenna is comprised of upper-layer conductor, lower-layer conductor, and wall patches. The upper-layer conductor consists of two diagonally aligned rectangular copper plates with a feeding gap at the center, and the lower-layer conductor is of two diagonally adjoined rectangular plates. The upper- and lower-layer conductors are adjoined with the wall patches. The diagonal alignment technique of the upper- and lower-layer plates was used to realize circular polarization and improve 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The double layers were deployed to improve impedance bandwidth (|S11| < −10 dB) and achieve bidirectional radiation pattern. The simulated impedance bandwidth and 3-dB AR bandwidth were 772.19–1014.6 MHz (27.13%) and 675–1000 MHz (38.80%), and the corresponding measured results were 759–1011 MHz (28.47%) and 648–1110 MHz (52.55%). The simulated LHCP/RHCP half-power beamwidth (HPBW), 3-dB AR beamwidth, and gain were 56° – 90°/54° – 92°, 60° – 104°, and 4.94 – 5.89 dBic, while the corresponding measured results were 52° – 98°/62° – 97°, 96° – 126°, and 4.28 – 5.72 dBic. As a result, the single-fed broadband CP bidirectional antenna is applicable to universal UHF-RFID readers. Besides, the novelty of this research lies in the use of diagonal alignment of conducting plates to achieve circular polarization and wider AR bandwidth.

In this paper, a new flexible wearable radio frequency identification (RFID) five-shaped slot patch tag placed on the human arm is designed for ultra-high frequency (UHF) healthcare sensing applications. The compact proposed tag consists of a patch structure provided with five shaped slot radiators and a flexible substrate, which minimize the human body’s impact on the antenna radiation performance. We have optimized our designed tag using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method with curve fitting within MATLAB to minimize antenna parameters to achieve a good return loss and an attractive radiation performance in the operating band. The PSO-optimized tag’s performance has been examined over the specific placement in some parts of the human body, such as wrist and chest, to evaluate the tag response and enable our tag antenna conception in wearable biomedical sensing applications. Finally, we have tested the robustness of this tag by evaluating its sensitivity as a function of the antenna radiator placement over the ground plane or by shaping the ground plane substrate for the tag’s position from the human body. Our numerical results show an optimal tag size with good matching features and promising read ranges near the human body.

This paper proposes a new synchronized serial-parallel CRC(Cycle Redundancy Check) with PIE(Pulse Interval Encoding) decoding circuit for the UHF(Ultra-High Frequency) RFID(Radio Frequency Identification), which is based on the ISO/IEC 18000-6C standards protocol. The parallel algorithm of CRC circuit is derived, and the serial or parallel CRC circuit on RFID tag chip is evaluated in this paper. Finally, the designed circuit is simulated and analyzed on the FPGA platform. Simulation results show that the proposed circuit meets the communication requirement of the protocol and addresses the problem of low data processing rate of conventional serial CRC circuit, as well as implements 1 to 8 degree of parallelism of the parallel CRC circuit for UHF RFID.

In this paper, a novel circularly polarized square slot microstrip antenna is proposed for radio frequency identification (RFID) applications. The circular polarization is achieved by incorporating an arc-shaped strip in the square slot antenna. This antenna is fed by deformed bent feeding line to achieve a broad bandwidth (BW). The key parameters of the antenna are used for parametric study to understand the influence on the antenna performance. To validate simulation results of the design, a prototype is fabricated on the commercially available FR4 material. Measured results show a good agreement with the simulated results. It is found that the antenna shows an impedance BW of 170 MHz (844–1014 MHz) and axial-ratio BW of 170 MHz (834–1004 MHz), which shows that the proposed antenna is a good candidate to be used as a RFID antenna.

In this paper, a novel wideband circularly polarized (CP) millimeter wave (mmWave) microstrip antenna is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a central patch and a microstrip line radiator. The CP radiation is achieved by loading a rectangular slot on the ground plane. To improve the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW), two symmetric parasitic rectangular patches paralleled to a central patch and a slit positioned to the right of the central patch are loaded. To verify this design, the proposed antenna is fabricated with a small antenna of 2.88 × 3.32 × 0.508 mm3. The measured impedance bandwidth (IMBW) for S11<−10 dB of the proposed antenna is 35.97% (22.8 to 33.8 GHz). Meanwhile, the simulation result shows that the 3-dB ARBW is 15.19% (28.77 to 33.5 GHz) within impedance bandwidth, and the peak gain is from 5.08 to 5.22 dBic within 3-dB ARBW. The proposed antenna is suitable for CP applications in the Ka-band.
