The in-house developed bismuthate glass and the SiCp/Al composites with different volume fractions of SiC particles (namely, 60 vol.%, 65 vol.%, 70 vol.%, and 75 vol.%) were jointed by vacuum hot-pressing process. The novel material can be used for the space mirror. The SiCp is an abbreviation for SiC particle. Firstly, the SiCp/Al composites with different vol.% of SiC particle were manufactured by using infiltration process. In order to obtain a stable bonding interface, the preoxide layers were fabricated on the surfaces of these composites for reacting with the bismuthate glass. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was carried out for characterizing the difference between the composites and bismuthate glass. The sealing quality of the composites and the bismuthate glass was quantified by using shear strength testing. The optical microstructures showed the particles were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. The SEM image shows that a smooth oxidation layer was generated on the SiCp/Al composite. The CTE testing result indicated that the higher the vol.% of the particles in the composite, the lower the CTE value. The shear strength testing result disclosed that SiCp/Al composite with relatively low CTE value was favorable to obtain a bonding interface with high strength.

SiCp/Al composites containing high volume fraction of SiC particles were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), and their thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity (TC) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), were characterized. High relative density (R-D) of composites was successfully achieved through the optimization of sintering parameters, such as sintering temperature, sintering pressure and heating rate. The measured TCs of SiCp/Al composites fabricated by SPS are higher than 195W/m.k, no matter the volume fraction of SiC particles is high or low as long as the R-D is higher than 95%. The measured CTEs of SiCp/Al composites are in good agreement with the estimated values based on Kerner,s model. The high volume fraction of SiCp/Al composites are a good candidate material to substitute for conventional thermal management materials in advanced electronic packages due to its tailorable thermophysical properties.

The fabrication and thermal physical properties contain thermal conductivity (TC) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) using 40%、50%、60% vol% β-SiC particle reinforced Al composite for electronic packaging respectively have been analyzed. The composites were produced by ball milling and pressing method. The composite which fabricated by tri-sized β-SiC particle with a weight ratio of 17:7:1,vol% of 50% and 60%.The dense and morphology were investigated. The relationship between volume fraction of β-SiC particle and thermal physical properties was discussed. Changed the volume fraction of β-SiC particle will led to a decreasing or increasing of TC and CTE. It found that values of TC and CTE were achieved their maximum balance when using tri-sized β-SiC particle of 160μm ,125μm as well as 38μm with a weight ratio of 17:7:1 and 50%vol of β-SiC particle reinforcing.

The surface integrity of the machined components of the high volume fraction SiC particle reinforced Al composites (SiCp/Al) is important as it influences the performance of the part. The grinding experiments of 55% volume fraction SiC particles reinforced Al composite with and without ultrasonic-assisted were performed. The grinding forces were tested, on which the effects of the grinding parameters were analyzed. The surface topography of SiCp/Al after ultrasonic assisted grinding were observed, based on which the material removal mode was discussed.

This study was conducted on titanium diboride (TiB2) reinforced Al metal matrix composites (MMCs) with improved properties using a TiB2 and aluminum (Al) 1050 alloy. Al composites reinforced with fine TiB2 at volume ratios of more than 60% were successfully fabricated via the liquid pressing infiltration (LPI) process, which can be used to apply gas pressure at a high temperature. The microstructure of the TiB2–Al composite fabricated at 1000 °C with pressurization of 10 bar for 1 h showed that molten Al effectively infiltrated into the high volume-fraction TiB2 preform due to the improved wettability and external gas pressurization. In addition, the interface of TiB2 and Al not only had no cracks or pores but also had no brittle intermetallic compounds. In conclusion, TiB2–Al composite, which has a sound microstructure without defects, has improved mechanical properties, such as hardness and strength, due to effective load transfer from the Al matrix to the fine TiB2 reinforcement.

AbstractThe existing research on SiCp/Al composite machining mainly focuses on the machining parameters or surface morphology. However, the surface quality of SiCp/Al composites with a high volume fraction has not been extensively studied. In this study, 32 SiCp/Al specimens with a high volume fraction were prepared and their machining parameters measured. The surface quality of the specimens was then tested and the effect of the grinding parameters on the surface quality was analyzed. The grinding quality of the composite specimens was comprehensively analyzed taking the grinding force, friction coefficient, and roughness parameters as the evaluation standards. The best grinding parameters were obtained by analyzing the surface morphology. The results show that, a higher spindle speed should be chosen to obtain a better surface quality. The final surface quality is related to the friction coefficient, surface roughness, and fragmentation degree as well as the quantity and distribution of the defects. Lower feeding amount, lower grinding depth and appropriately higher spindle speed should be chosen to obtain better surface quality. Lower feeding amount, higher grinding depth and spindle speed should be chosen to balance grind efficiently and surface quality. This study proposes a systematic evaluation method, which can be used to guide the machining of SiCp/Al composites with a high volume fraction.

This paper deals with the grinding performances of SiCp/Al composites with higher volume fraction and larger SiC particle. The effects of the grinding parameters on the grinding force, removal mechanisms of SiC particles have been investigated. The grinding tests were carried out by using diamond wheel on surface grinding machine. The results indicate that the feed speed of worktable has more significant effect on the grinding forces than that of grinding depth. The scanning electron microscopic images of the machined surfaces indicate that the material removal of SiC particles was primarily due to the failure of the interface between the reinforcement and matrix, and resulting from microcracks along the interface and many fracture or crushed SiC particles on the ground surface.

SiC particle reinforced AlCu5Mn composite foams (SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams) were fabricated by the direct foaming of the melt. The quasi-static compressive properties of SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams were tested by compressive test. The effects of SiC particle, the average diameter of pores, and the relative density on the quasi-static compressive properties of SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams were performed with the universal material testing machine. The microstructure of SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite was studied by SEM. The results show that choosing small size of SiC particles as reinforced material, thinning pore diameter, and increasing the relative density of SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams with the same volume fraction of SiC particles can improve the energy absorption ability under the quasi-static loading. SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams are of well compressive property. The compressive deformation course of SiCp/ZAlCu5Mn composite foams involves three stages that are the linearly elastic deformation region, the collapse plateau region, and the densification region. The test results may be influenced by strain gauge, data processing method, shape of incident wave etc.

Abstract Premix Al-5.5Zn-2.5Mg-0.5Cu alloy powder was analyzed as matrix in this research. Gas atomized powder Al-9Si with 20% volume fraction of SiC particles was used as reinforcement and added into the alloy with varied concentration. Mix powders were compacted by dual action press with compaction pressure of 700 MPa. High volume fraction of SiC particles gave lower green density due to resistance of SiC particles to plastic deformation during compaction process and resulted voids between particles and this might reduce sinterability of this mix powder. Sintering was carried out under ultra high purity nitrogen gas from 565°-580°C for 1 hour. High content of premix Al-5.5Zn-2.5Mg-0.5Cu alloy powder gave better sintering density and reached up to 98% relative. Void between particles, oxide layer on aluminum powder and lower wettability between matrix and reinforcement particles lead to uncompleted liquid phase sintering, and resulted on lower sintering density and mechanical properties on powder with high content of SiC particles. Mix powder with wt90% of Alumix 431D and wt10% of Al-9Si-vf20SiC powder gave higher tensile strength compare to another mix powder for 270 MPa. From chemical compositions, sintering precipitates might form after sintering such as MgZn2, CuAl2 and Mg2Si. X-ray diffraction, DSC-TGA, and SEM were used to characterize these materials.
