The microbiological profile of infectious keratitis has shown great differences across the world. Due to the continuous shifting trends in microbiological profile and antibiotic resistance patterns reported in several studies, constant local updates are crucial to provide an adequate treatment. The propose of this study was to analyze the incidence of infectious keratitis, possible changing trends in microbiological profile, and bacteria sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics, in our tertiary center, in the last 10 years. A retrospective study was performed, based on the survey review of electronic medical records of all patients with presumed infectious keratitis, between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2018. Microbial cultures were performed, and patients were treated according to an internal protocol. A total of 1360 samples were included. We obtained a 35.1% culture-positive rate. Bacteria accounted for 76.78% of all positive scrapes (53.34% were Gram positive and 23.44% were Gram negative), Acanthamoeba for 12.13%, fungi for 8.16%, and virus for 2.93%. The most frequent agent identified was Corynebacterium macginleyi (18.41%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (17.78%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (9.41%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (9.00%). We identified at least one ophthalmologic risk factor in 410 patients (85.77%). Trauma and contact lens wear were the most common risk factors found, accounting for 34.94% (n = 167) and 33.47% (n = 160) of cases. Sensitivity to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides was tested in all bacterial isolates, presenting values of 96.66% and 98.12%. In our region, the most common bacteria are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and they showed high sensitivity rates to first-line antibiotics, without any modification or emergence of antibiotic resistance trends during the 10 years of the study. For this reason, we decided to maintain the same internal protocol in our tertiary centre.

We sought to investigate the prevalence of potentially pathogenic bacteria in secretions and tonsillar tissues of children with chronic adenotonsillitis hypertrophy compared to controls. Prospective case-control study comparing patients between 2 and 12 years old who underwent adenotonsillectomy due to chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy to children without disease. We compared detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Moraxella catarrhalis by real-time PCR in palatine tonsils, adenoids, and nasopharyngeal washes obtained from 37 children with and 14 without adenotonsillar hypertrophy. We found high frequency (>50%) of Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in both groups of patients. Although different sampling sites can be infected with more than one bacterium and some bacteria can be detected in different tissues in the same patient, adenoids, palatine tonsils, and nasopharyngeal washes were not uniformly infected by the same bacteria. Adenoids and palatine tonsils of patients with severe adenotonsillar hypertrophy had higher rates of bacterial coinfection. There was good correlation of detection of Moraxella catarrhalis in different sampling sites in patients with more severe tonsillar hypertrophy, suggesting that Moraxella catarrhalis may be associated with the development of more severe hypertrophy, that inflammatory conditions favor colonization by this agent. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis are frequently detected in palatine tonsils, adenoids, and nasopharyngeal washes in children. Simultaneous detection of Moraxella catarrhalis in adenoids, palatine tonsils, and nasopharyngeal washes was correlated with more severe tonsillar hypertrophy.

Nghiên cứu đã tiến hành phân tích kết quả xét nghiệm của 4722 mẫu bệnh phẩm vi sinh tại bệnh viện Đa khoa Quốc tế Hải Phòng từ năm 2018 đến năm 2020 nhằm mô tả một số đặc điểm kháng kháng sinh nhóm beta-lactam của một số vi khuẩn điển hình. Qua phân tích nhóm nghiên cứu thấy các vi khuẩn chủ yếu phân lập được là Escherichia coli (26,2%), Staphylococcus aureus (12,5%), và Haemophilus influenzae (8,6%). Vi khuẩn Escherichia coli kháng kháng sinh nhóm Beta-lactam với tỷ lệ khá cao (từ 1% (Imipenem) đến 29% (cefuroxime)). Tuy nhiên, vi khuẩn Streptococcus pneumoniae còn nhạy cảm với nhóm kháng sinh này với tỷ lệ kháng là 0%. Cefuroxime là kháng sinh có tỷ lệ bị kháng cao nhất với 42,7%. Các chủngvi khuẩn tại bệnh viện còn khá nhạy cảm với các kháng sinh thuộc nhóm carbapenem với tỷ lệ kháng thấp. Trong đó vi khuẩn là Acinetobacter baumannii và Pseudomonas aeruginosa có tỉ lệ kháng kháng sinh nhóm này từ 4,2% đến 5,2%. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã cung cấp dữ liệu về tính đề kháng kháng sinh betalactam của các vi khuẩn điển hình tại bệnh viện nhằm hỗ trợ các bác sĩ trong việc lựa chọn và sử dụng kháng sinh an toàn và hiệu quả

Abstract Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-threatening genetic disease among Caucasians. CF patients suffer from chronic lung infections due to the presence of thick mucus, caused by cftr gene dysfunction. The two most commonly found bacteria in the mucus of CF patients are Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is well known that early-infecting P. aeruginosa strains produce anti-staphylococcal compounds and inhibit S. aureus growth. More recently, it has been shown that late-infecting P. aeruginosa strains develop commensal-like/coexistence interaction with S. aureus. The aim of this study was to decipher the impact of P. aeruginosa strains on S. aureus. RNA sequencing analysis showed 77 genes were specifically dysregulated in the context of competition and 140 genes in the context of coexistence in the presence of P. aeruginosa. In coexistence, genes encoding virulence factors and proteins involved in carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides and amino acids metabolism were downregulated. On the contrary, several transporter family encoding genes were upregulated. In particular, several antibiotic pumps belonging to the Nor family were upregulated: tet38, norA and norC, leading to an increase in antibiotic resistance of S. aureus when exposed to tetracycline and ciprofloxacin and an enhanced internalization rate within epithelial pulmonary cells. This study shows that coexistence with P. aeruginosa affects the S. aureus transcriptome and virulence.

Five compounds were isolated from the EtOAc extract of Euphorbia altotibetica. The structures of these compounds were elucidated as: β-sitosterol (1), daucosterol (2), chrysophanol (3), (-)-epiafzelechin (4), 5,2-dihydroxy-7,8,6-trimethoxyflavanone (5) by NMR datas, the antibacterial activity of all compounds were examined on five species of bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus licheniformis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

ABSTRACTThe Regional Resistance Surveillance program monitored susceptibility rates and developing resistance by geographic region, including 12 Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries. Reference broth microdilution methods for susceptibility/interpretations were applied, processing 5,053 strains. AmongStaphylococcus aureusisolates (37% methicillin-resistantS. aureus[MRSA], highest in South Korea [73%]), linezolid (LZD), tigecycline (TIG), and vancomycin were 100% active, but 33 and 34% of strains were levofloxacin (LEV) or macrolide resistant, respectively.Streptococcus pneumoniaewas most resistant to β-lactams and macrolides (45%) but was LZD, LEV, and TIG susceptible (>98%). Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype rates inEscherichia coliandKlebsiellaspp. were 48 and 47%, respectively, and were highest in Taiwan, at 75 to 91%. The best anti-ESBL-phenotype agents were amikacin (81 to 96% susceptible), colistin (COL; >98%), TIG (>98%), and carbapenems (81 to 97%).Pseudomonas aeruginosashowed ≥20% resistance to all drugs except COL (99% susceptible). In conclusion, endemic evolving antimicrobial resistances in APAC nations show compromised roles for many commonly used antimicrobials.

AbstrakPeningkatan resistensi bakteri penyebab PPOK terhadap beberapa antibiotika yang lazim digunakan oleh klinisi dalam pemberian terapi empirik akan menyebabkan berkurangnya keefektifan terhadap terapi PPOK. Hal ini akan berdampak semakin tingginya morbiditas dan mortalitas yang disebabkan oleh PPOK. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola resistensi bakteri penyebab PPOK terhadap beberapa antibiotika di Laboratorium Mikrobiologi RSUP.Dr.M.Djamil periode 2010 – 2012. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan pada bulan November 2013 sampai dengan Desember 2013 di Laboratotium Mikrobiologi RSUP Dr.M.Djamil Padang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif retrospektif. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan bakteri penyebab PPOK adalah Klebsiella spp (42,44%), Streptococcus α hemolyticus (38,37%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12,21%), Staphylococcus aureus (4,65%), Proteus mirabilis (1,16%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (0,58%) dan Streptococcus pneumoniae (0,58%). Disimpulkan bahwa bakteri tersering pada sputum pasien PPOK adalah Klebsiella spp. Tingkat resistensi tertinggi adalah Ampicillin, sedangkan tingkat kepekaan tertinggi adalah terhadap Netilmycin.Kata kunci: antibiotika, bakteri, resistensiAbstractIncreased resistance of bacteria that cause COPD to some antibiotics that are commonly used by clicicians in the provision of empiric therapy, it will cause a reduction in the effectiveness of the tratment of COPD. This study aimed to determine the resistance pattern of Bacteria in sputum of patients COPD to some antibiotics in Microbiology Laboratory Dr.M.Djamil Hospital Peroid 2010 – 2012. The research method was a descriptive and retrospective. According to the result, the bacteria that causes COPD is Klebsiella spp (42.44%), Streptococcus α hemolyticus (38.37%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12.21%), Staphylococcus aureus (4.65%), Proteus mirabilis (1.16%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (0.58%), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (0.58%). It can be concluded that the bacteria which cause the highest number of COPD is Klebsiella sp. The highest level of resistance is ampicillin while the highest level of sensitivity Is netilmycin.Keywords: antibiotics, bacteria, resistance

Alternative antimicrobials, such as metals, are one of the methods currently used to help mitigate antibiotic resistance. Metal-based antimicrobials such as copper and silver are used currently both to prevent and to treat infections. Although the efficacy of these antimicrobials has been determined in single-species culture, bacteria rarely exist in a single-species group in the environment. Both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are often found associated with each other in severe chronic infections displaying increased virulence and antibiotic tolerance. In this study, we determined that multiple compounds secreted by P. aeruginosa are able to increase the tolerance of S. aureus to both copper and silver. This work demonstrates the expansive chemical communication occurring in polymicrobial infections between bacteria.
