Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of Snail, galectin-3, and IGF1R in benign and malignant pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) and explore their role in the diagnosis of malignant PPGL. Methods. We retrospectively collected and analyzed surgical tumor tissue from 226 patients initially diagnosed with PPGL who underwent surgery from Jan. 2009 to Jan. 2016 at West China Hospital, Sichuan University. We observed and quantified the expression of Snail, galectin-3, and IGF1R in paraffin-embedded samples by immunohistochemical staining. Results. The significant difference in survival time among the three groups (benign PHEO, benign PGL, and potentially malignant PPGL) was compared by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The positive staining of Snail, galectin-3, and IGF1R in the benign PHEO group was significantly lower than that in the other three groups (P<0.001). The Kaplan-Meier survival plots indicated that the survival time of the patients with intense positive staining was significantly lower than that of the patients with weak positive staining. Conclusion. The intense expression of Snail, galectin-3, and IGF1R may be valuable indicators for the diagnosis of malignant PPGL.

Abstract Objectives Pancreatic cancers in most patients in Ecuador are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease, which is associated with lower survival. To determine the characteristics and global survival of pancreatic cancer patients in a social security hospital in Ecuador between 2007 and 2017. Methods A retrospective cohort study and a survival analysis were performed using all the available data in the electronic clinical records of patients with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in a Hospital of Specialties of Quito-Ecuador between 2007 and 2017. The included patients were those coded according to the ICD 10 between C25.0 and C25.9. Our univariate analysis calculated frequencies, measures of central tendency and dispersion. Through the Kaplan-Meier method we estimated the median time of survival and analyzed the difference in survival time among the different categories of our included variables. These differences were shown through the log rank test. Results A total of 357 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer between 2007 and 2017 were included in the study. More than two-thirds (69.9%) of the patients were diagnosed in late stages of the disease. The median survival time for all patients was of 4 months (P25: 2, P75: 8). Conclusions The statistically significant difference of survival time between types of treatment is the most relevant finding in this study, when comparing to all other types of treatments.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) became one of the public health problem throughout the world, including Indonesia. The number of hemodialysis patients has increased every year and have an impact on increasing the number of death in General Hospital Ibnu Sina Gresik. This study was determine the survival of hemodialysis patients using Kaplan-Meier analysis techniques. Non-reactive research with a retrospective cohort using the calculations right censoring. 155 population were taken randomly and sample size of 111. Data were collected using a checklist. The estimated survival time of female, adult age, further education, patients work, patients without insurance, patients with normal nutritional status, patients with a history of disease, patient with hypertention and patient with diabetic had a better survival time. The insurance status, nutritional status, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus were significant difference to the survival time (p-value &lt;0.05). It was necessary special treatment for CKD patients through giving information, education to families and patients to maintain healthy lifestyle.

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to compare radiofrequency ablation ,TACE and their combined treatment in terms of safety and efficacy.Methods Retrospective analysis was carried out on the medical records of patients who had previously undergone curative hepatic resection and suffered multiple recurrent HCCs within the Milan criteria. The cohort of patients receiving RFA was compared to the cohort of patients receiving TACE and combined treatment. Disease outcome was investigated in terms of survival after recurrence.Results From January 2006 to April 2014, 964 patients with recurrent HCC were enrolled in the database of West China Hospital. A total of 360 patients (37.3%) were enrolled in this retrospective study based on the inclusion criteria. In these patients, 177 (49.2%) received TACE, 121 (33.6%) received RFA, and 62 (17.2%) underwent combined treatment (CT). There was a statistically significant difference between the survival rates among the 3 groups: in the TACE group, the median survival time (MST) was 25 months, with 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates of 93.1%, 50.0% and 26.4%, respectively; in the RFA group, the MST was 33 months, with 1- ,2-, and 3-year survival rates of 96.7%, 65.7% and 40.1%, respectively; and in the CT group, the MST was 36 months, with 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates of 96.8%, 78.1% and 48.6%, respectively.Conclusion Compared with TACE, RFA and combined treatment demonstrated a survival benefit for managing patients who had HCC recurrence with a total of 2–3 tumours.

Abstract Background: Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines are frequently used in patients with difficult access. We have previously reported on the longevity and complication rates of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines, but there are limited data comparing outcomes of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines to traditionally placed peripheral intravenous lines in children. The aim of this study was to compare the longevity and complication rates of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines to traditionally placed intravenous lines in a pediatric population. Methods: This study analyzed 300 ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines and 552 traditionally placed intravenous lines using patient records to determine the reason and timing for intravenous line removal. A t-test was used to compare overall mean survival times, and a log-rank test was used to compare Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Complication rates were compared using a chi-squared test. Results: The survival times of ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines (mean = 73 hours, SD = 68 hours) were significantly longer than those of traditionally placed intravenous lines (mean = 38 hours, SD = 29.4 hours), t(559) = 8.51, P &lt; .0001. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis yielded a median ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous line survival time of 143 hours (IQR = 68–246) and a median traditionally placed intravenous line survival time of 100 hours (IQR = 65–106) with a significant difference between the 2 survival curves by the log-rank test. There was also no significant difference in complication rates between ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines (34.8%) compared to traditionally placed intravenous lines (31.8%), x2(1, N = 517) = 0.465, P = .50. Conclusions: Our data suggests that ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines are a viable option for children, including those with a history of difficult access. Survival times were longer for ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines versus traditionally placed intravenous lines, and complication rates of the ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines and traditionally placed intravenous lines were similar.

Objective The proportion of incidentally discovered pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL) has increased over time. However, our knowledge of them is quite limited. The purpose of this retrospective study is to generalize the commonalities in incidentally discovered PPGL, offer evidence for clinical diagnosis and management. Methods Five hundred twenty-six patients were included in our study after filtration from the database of West China Hospital of Sichuan University between May, 2007 and December, 2016. Among the patients, 148 of them were incidental findings and 378 of them were suspected findings. All patients’ demography and tumor characteristics were recorded in detail, especially hemodynamic records and hormonal assays. The reasons for taking radiography were also collected. Most patients received preoperative medical preparation. Intraoperative and postoperative courses as well as surgical outcomes were also analyzed to identify differences between incidental findings and suspected findings. Results Incidentally discovered PPGL took up 28.1% of the study population. Suspected PPGLs had a higher prevalence of hypertension, lower proportion of non-functioning PPGL, higher prevalence of MEN2 and better post-surgical blood pressure recovery than incidental finding group. However, patients in the incidental finding group showed no significant difference in preoperative blood pressure and hormonal assays with suspected findings in metaphrine and normetaphrine in plasma and urine (P > 0.05). Conclusions Due to the development of technology, more PPGLs are discovered incidentally. Considering the tumor characteristics and surgical outcome, surgical decisions should be made more cautiously.

Abstract Introduction: Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) accounts for about 90% of cases of HL. (Medicine PMID 26107683) Within cHL, there are 4 main histologic subtypes; the incidence of cHL varies based on age, race/ethnicity, geography, socioeconomic factors, Epstein Barr virus status, and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. (Adv HematologyPMID 21197477) Considerable disparities exist in the incidence and survival rates between Hispanic (H) and non-Hispanic (NH) populations with cHL. (Ann Oncol PMID 22241896) Between 2013-2017, the incidence rate of cHL in Florida (FL) was 457 per 100,00, and in Texas (TX), it was 408 per 100,000. (North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, 2020) Our study aims to determine demographics, treatment outcomes, and survival outcomes of H and NH patients diagnosed with cHL in TX and FL. Methods: This is a retrospective study of a cohort of patients diagnosed with lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin) from the Texas Cancer Registry (TCR) and the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) between 2006-2017. The third edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-3) was used to identify patient with cHL. Variables include gender, race, ethnicity, birthplace, occupation, dates at diagnosis and death, primary payer at diagnosis, subtype of lymphoma, stage, type of treatment, poverty index, and vitality status. The significance of variation in the distribution of categorical outcomes with ethnicity (H, NH) was assessed with Fisher's Exact tests or Pearson's Chi-square tests as appropriate; age was assessed with T-tests or Wilcoxon tests as appropriate. Survival time was measured in years from date of primary diagnosis to the date of death. Survival distributions were described with Kaplan-Meier curves and significance of variation in median survival with ethnicity was assessed with log rank testing. At risk tables were computed based on the Kaplan-Meier estimate of the survival curve. All statistical testing was two-sided with a significance level of 5%. Corrections for multiple testing were not applied. Results: There were 6152 (1266 H, 4886 NH) patients in FL and 6241(1736 H, 4505 NH) patients in TX identified with cHL. In FL, the median age at diagnosis was 44.8 years (y) for H vs 48.3y for NH (p &lt; 0.001) while in TX, there was no statistically significant difference (45.8y H, 44.9y NH, p = 0.102). In FL, there was no statistically significant difference among females (44% H, 46% NH, p = 0.136) and males (56% H, 53% NH, p = 0.136) while there was one in TX among females (43% H, 45% NH, p = 0.048) and males (58% H, 55% NH, p = 0.048). In FL, the majority of H (40.5%) and NH (36.6%) were in the 10-19.9% poverty index (p&lt;0.001). In TX, the majority of H (51.2%) were in the 20-100% poverty index while the majority of NH (32.2%) were in the 10-19.9% index (p&lt;0.001). In FL, 10.7% H and 6.4% NH were without insurance at time of diagnosis (p&lt;0.001) while in TX, 23.8% H and 11.7% NH were in that position (p&lt;0.001). The most common stage of diagnosis was stage III/IV with 37.8% H vs 34.2% NH in FL (p&lt;0.001) and 44.1% H vs 34.6% NH in TX (p&lt;0001). In FL, median survival time was 10.6y H vs 11.4y NH, while in TX, it was 10.3y H vs 10.4y NH. In FL, the survival probabilities at years 2, 5, and 10 were 0.858, 0.774, and 0.550 for H vs 0.808, 0.696, and 0.545 for NH, respectively. In TX, the survival probabilities at years 2, 5, and 10 were 0.758, 0.674, and 0.522 for H vs 0.828, 0.743, and 0.579 for NH, respectively. The survival probability at years 2, 5, and 10 were higher for H compared to NH in FL (p = 0.0018), however the survival probability at years 2, 5, and 10 were lower for H compared to NH in TX (p &lt; 0.0001). Conclusion: Our study of patients diagnosed with cHL demonstrated several statistically significant differences among H and NH patients in both states. Importantly, H patients in TX had a statistically significant lower survival probability at 2, 5, and 10y compared to NH patients. A reason for this could be the more significant number of uninsured H as compared to NH patients. Conversely, H patients in FL had a statistically significant higher survival probability at 2 and 5y compared to NH patients, partly explained by the lower median age of diagnosis of H patients compared to NH patients. There is a need for further analysis that could help explain the disparities among the different ethnicities. Figure 1 Figure 1. Background Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers, and its histopathological type is mainly bladder urothelial carcinoma, accounting for about 90%. The prognostic biomarkers of bladder cancer are classified into clinical features biomarkers and molecular biomarkers. Nevertheless, due to the existence of individual specificity, patients with similar pathological characteristics still have great differences in the risk of disease recurrence. Therefore, it is often inaccurate to predict the survival status of patients based on clinical characteristic biomarkers, and a prognostic molecular biomarker that can grade the risk of bladder cancer patients is needed. Methods A total of three bladder urothelial carcinoma datasets were used in this study from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and Gene Expression Omnibus database. In order to avoid overfitting, all samples were randomly divided into one training set and three validation sets, which were used to construct and test the prognostic biomarker model of bladder urothelial carcinoma. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were used to screen candidate mRNAs and construct prognostic biomarkers model. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to evaluate the predictive performance of the model. Results A prognostic biomarker model of bladder urothelial carcinoma combining with eight mRNA was constructed. Kaplan–Meier analyses indicated that a significant difference in the survival time of patients between the high-risk and the low-risk group. The area under the ROC curve were 0.632 (95% confidence interval (CI) [0.541–0.723]), 0.693 (95% CI [0.601–0.784]) and 0.686 (95% CI [0.540–0.831]) when the model was used to predict the patient’s survival time in three validation datasets. The model showed high accuracy and applicability.
