Beans and other legumes have multiple nutritional qualities that reduce the risk of many diseases. However, the link between legume intake and obesity remains unclear. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the association between bean intake, body fat percentage (BF%), and waist circumference, in 246 women. BF% was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Bean intake was assessed using the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire and indexed using total cups of bean-based food items and also factor scores derived from a factor analysis showing adherence to a bean-based dietary pattern. Bean consumption was expressed as cups per 1000 kilocalories. R\egression results showed that the relationship between bean intake (total cups) and BF% was inverse and linear (F = 7.4, P=0.0069). Moreover, with bean consumption being divided into tertiles, there were mean differences across groups in BF% (F = 7.4, P=0.0008) and waist circumference (F = 4.2, P=0.0164). Specifically, women who consumed moderate or high amounts of beans had less body fat and smaller waists than those with low intakes. Similarly, using tertiles to categorize participants based on adherence to a bean-based dietary pattern, developed using factor analysis, those with low adherence had higher BF% (F = 7.9, P=0.0005) and larger waists (F = 4.5, P=0.0118) than their counterparts. The associations remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders. In conclusion, beans and other legumes seem to have dietary qualities that may be beneficial in the battle against obesity.

Abstract Background Excess aldosterone has been shown to be associated with obesity; however, there is currently a lack of data regarding the relationship between percentage of body fat and primary aldosteronism (PA), particularly pertaining to Asian populations. Furthermore, essential hypertension may mimic the condition of PA and there needs to be differentiation between the two. This study aimed to assess the association between percentage of body fat and PA. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in the outpatient department of the Endocrine and Metabolism Unit of the tertiary care medical center in Thailand. Data was obtained from 79 patients who had been screened for PA due to hypertension in young-onset, hypokalemia, adrenal incidentaloma or resistance hypertension. Essential hypertension was defined as patients who had high blood pressure and were negative for PA screening. Body fat percentage was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis. The relationship between percentage of body fat and a diagnosis of PA was assessed using logistic regression analysis, including adjustment for confounding factors. Results The participants were divided into a PA group (n = 41) and an essential hypertension group (n = 38). After controlling for confounding variables (age, sex, body mass index, cholesterol and insulin resistance status), the odds ratio of having PA in males with a percentage of body fat > 25% and females with percentage > 30% was 1.82 (95%CI = 1.79–1.86, p < 0.001). Conclusion A higher percentage of body fat is associated with an increased risk of PA. Further studies need to be conducted to confirm the relationship between body fat percentage and PA.

The university represents a critical space for students in terms of prevalence of malnutrition. The objective of this study was to determine the body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (% BF), waist circumference (WC), and anemia in university students. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 2,285 university students from Lima, Peru. The sample was selected by nonprobability convenience sampling. Anthropometric data and hemoglobin levels were measured. The Chi-square test was used. The analysis of the associated factors was done using binary logistic regression. A significance level of 5% was considered. There were no significant differences between men and women in BMI ( p > 0.05 ). The men presented significantly high and very high levels of % BF ( p < 0.001 ). The proportion of women who presented anemia and high and very high WC was significantly higher compared to men ( p < 0.001 ). Being older than 27 years (ORB = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.19–3.6), being male (ORB = 2.68; 95% CI = 2.02–3.55), studying at the engineering faculty (ORB = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.09–1.79), having excess body fat (ORB = 8.17; 95% CI = 6.13–10.87), and having an elevated WC (ORB = 35.51; 95% CI = 25.06–50.33) significantly predicted overweight/obesity. The findings of this study suggest that college students, especially males and those who are not enrolled in health sciences colleges, should be a priority in healthy lifestyle interventions, particularly nutritional education programs, to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity.

Abstract Background: This study aims to examine the level of knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of adolescents towards sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) together with the associated factors that determines their KAP. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires that consisted of sociodemographic, the KAP for the SSB questionnaire, and the BEVQ questionnaire. The respondents’ height, weight, waist circumference and body fat percentage were measured. This study involved 439 adolescents (with a 97.6% response rate), aged between 13 to 17 years old, in public secondary schools in Selangor, Malaysia. Results: The results reveal that 35% of the adolescents were overweight, 26% had a high waist circumference, and 45% had a high body fat percentage. Caffeinated drinks and full cream milk were the most frequently consumed SSBs. The KAP score revealed a high attitude (88.4%), a moderate knowledge (51.8%) and a low practice (40.5%). Those with a higher body fat percentage showed significantly higher attitude scores (p<0.05). Low household income groups (adjusted OR=0.51; 95% CI=0.26-0.99), females (adjusted OR=0.41, 95% CI=0.27-0.62), adolescents aged 16-17 years old (adjusted OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.22-0.85), and urban areas (adjusted OR=1.78, 95% CI=1.16-2.72) demonstrated a significant (p<0.05) positive determinant towards the KAP score. Conclusion: This study revealed that high awareness of negative health outcomes associated with SSBs among adolescents was not in accord with the level of their lifestyle choices. Future interventions must consider this critical situation so that any knowledge being transferred to the adolescents can be translated into their own practices.

Abstract Objectives Insulin resistance is the most common metabolic change associated with obesity. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance and body composition especially adipose tissue in a randomized Tehrani population. Methods This study used data of 2,160 individuals registered in a cross-sectional study on were randomly selected from among subjects who were referred to nutrition counseling clinic in Tehran, from April 2016 to September 2017. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment formula. The odds ratio (95% CI) was calculated using logistic regression models. Results The mean age of the men was 39 (±10) and women were 41 (±11) (the age ranged from 20 to 50 years). The risk of increased HOMA-IR was 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01–1.04) for an increase in one percent of Body fat, and 1.03 (95% CI: 1.00–1.05) for an increase in one percent of Trunk fat. Moreover, the odds ratio of FBS for an increase in one unit of Body fat percent and Trunk fat percent increased by 1.05 (adjusted odds ratio [95% CI: 1.03, 1.06]) and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.08). Also, the risk of increased Fasting Insulin was 1.05 (95% CI: 1.03–1.07) for an increase in one unit of Body fat percent, and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.02–1.08) for an increase in one unit of Trunk fat percent. Conclusions The findings of the present study showed that there was a significant relationship between HOMA-IR, Fasting blood sugar, Fasting Insulin, and 2 h Insulin with percent of Body fat, percent of Trunk fat.

This study compared the waist circumference (WC) measurements of Chinese children at different sites to determine the relationship between WC measurements and body fat. WC was measured at five sites in 255 subjects aged 9–19 years: immediately below the lowest rib (WC1), at the narrowest waist (WC2), the midpoint between the lowest rib and the iliac crest (WC3), 1 cm above the umbilicus (WC4), and immediately above the iliac crest (WC5). Body fat mass (FM), body fat percentage (% BF), body fat mass in the trunk (FM in the trunk), and fat percentage in the trunk (% BF in the trunk) were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The WCs were then compared through ANOVA with repeated measurement. The relationship of WC of each site with FM, % BF, FM in the trunk, and % BF in the trunk was examined through partial correlation. The WCs exhibited the following pattern: WC2 < WC1 < WC3 < WC4 < WC5 (p<0.001) in males and WC2 < WC1 < WC4, WC3 < WC5 (p<0.001) in females. The measured WCs were strongly correlated with FM, % BF, FM in the trunk, and % BF in the trunk. The WC measurements at five commonly used sites among Chinese children are different from one another. Results indicate that standardizing the anatomic point for the WC measurements is necessary.

Abstract Background: Inappropriate sleep duration (shorter/longer than optimal sleep duration) has come to be identified as a potential cardiometabolic risk factor, and thereby, as a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Few data exist regarding the gender differences in the relationship between sleep duration and cardiometabolic risk.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a study population of 9262 apparently healthy (5004 male, 4258 female) subjects at the Health Planning Center of Nihon University Hospital between September, 2015, and October 2016.Results: In the male subjects, as compared to a sleep duration of 6 to 7 hours, a sleep duration of ³8 hours was associated with an odds ratio (OR) for abdominal obesity (defined according to the Japanese criteria for metabolic syndrome as a waist circumference of ³85 cm) of 1.31 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004-1.71) and for a non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level of ³150 mg/dL (defined as “Borderline hyper” by the Japan Atherosclerosis Society Guidelines for Prevention of ASCVD 2017) of 1.33 (1.05-1.68), and a sleep duration of <5 hours was associated with an OR (95% CI) for a fasting blood glucose of ³100 mg/dL (defined as “high” by a specialized lifestyle checkup program for the detection of symptoms of metabolic syndrome in Japan) of 1.74 (1.25-2.42). On the other hand, in the female subjects, as compared to a sleep duration of 6 to 7 hours, a sleep duration of <5 hours was associated with an OR (95% CI) for abdominal obesity (waist circumference ³90 cm) of 1.98 (1.11-3.55) and for a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level of ³5.6 % of 1.52 (1.10-2.10), whereas a sleep duration of ³8 hours was not associated with worsening of any of the examined cardiometabolic risk factors. Conclusions: There may be gender differences in the relationship between sleep duration and cardiometabolic risk. To further reduce the risk of ASCVD, it may be of particular importance to emphasize adequate sleep duration.Clinical Trial Registration: UMIN (http://www.umin.ac.jp/) Study ID:  UMIN000037643 retrospectively registered on 9 August 2019

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between trunk adiposity and trunk flexibility among adults.  Methods: A total of 29 participants, male (n=11) and female (n=18) participants between the ages of 19 and 84 years. The participants were recruited from the University of Central Oklahoma daily email news service. The bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA) was used to calculate percent body fat and body mass index (BMI). Three circumference measurements were taken on each participant: waist, abdomen, and hips. The two inclinometers were placed on the sacroiliac joint (S1) and thoracic 12 (T12) to measure trunk flexion and extension. Trunk flexibility was measured as the difference between the two reading at full flexion or extension. Results: The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was used to analyze the results. There was a significant negative relationship between trunk flexion correlated with abdomen circumference (r= -.49, p= .01) and hip circumference (r= -.39, p= .03). There was a non- significant relationship observed between trunk flexion and WHR (r= -.10, p= .62) and waist circumference (r= -.35, p= .06). There was a non-significant relationship observed between trunk extension and WHR (r= -.07, p= .71), waist circumference (r= .17, p= .38), abdomen circumference (r= .07, p= .71), and hip circumference (r= .29, p= .13). Trunk flexion was not correlated to BMI (r= -.27, p= .15) and body fat percentage (r= -.29, p= .14). A significant relationship was found between trunk extension and BMI (r= .38, p= .04). Trunk extension and body fat percentage (r= .02, p= .92) did not have a significant relationship. Conclusion: Abdomen and hips are most beneficial when measuring circumferences for trunk adiposity. It was found that trunk flexion has a greater relationship with trunk adiposity than trunk extension.

Obesity is associated with decreased circulating testosterone levels, the main male sex hormone. However, there are a number of different male sex hormones whose dynamics remain poorly understood regarding this pathology. In this regard, 17 hydroxyprogesterone (17-OH progesterone), as an important precursor of testosterone synthetized in testes and adrenal glands, could play an essential role in testosterone deficiency in male obesity. Moreover, similarly to testosterone, 17-OH progesterone could be closely associated with visceral fat distribution and metabolic dysfunction. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess serum 17-OH progesterone levels in non-diabetic obese young men and to evaluate their relationship with clinical, analytical, and anthropometric parameters. We conducted a cross-sectional study including 266 non-diabetic men with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) aged 18–49 years; 17-OH progesterone and total testosterone (TT) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. 17-OH progesterone levels were significantly lower in tertile 3 of body fat percentage in comparison with tertile 1 (0.74 ng/mL vs. 0.94 ng/mL, p < 0.01; Bonferroni correction) and in comparison with tertile 2 (0.74 ng/mL vs. 0.89 ng/mL, p = 0.02; Bonferroni correction). 17-OH progesterone levels correlated negatively with weight, BMI, waist circumference, insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and visceral fat, and positively with TT, free testosterone (FT), luteinizing hormone, and fat-free mass percentage. Multivariate linear-regression analysis showed that body fat percentage and HOMA-IR were inversely associated with 17-OH progesterone levels, while FT and ACTH were positively linked to circulating 17-OH progesterone levels. In conclusion, in a population of non-diabetic obese young men, 17-OH progesterone levels were inversely associated with adiposity. Body fat percentage and insulin resistance were negatively related to 17-OH progesterone levels, whereas FT and ACTH levels were positively associated with 17-OH progesterone levels.
