With the increasing depth of coal mining and expanding mining scale, the rocks surrounding deep roadways are in a complex mechanical condition of frequent dynamic disturbance. The heterogeneity has an important influence on rock mass failure under dynamic loads. Therefore, it is necessary to study the deformation and failure of heterogeneous roadway under dynamic load. In this paper, the effect of heterogeneity on stability of roadway under static and different dynamic loads is studied. According to the results, the effect of rock mass heterogeneity on the deformation and failure of surrounding rock varies with different degrees of heterogeneity. Under static loading conditions, the stability of roadway is negatively correlated with the degree of heterogeneity of the rock mass. Under dynamic loading conditions, the change of heterogeneity degree has significant influence on the stability of surrounding rock. With the increase in dynamic load strength, the change in variation difference in the average value of roof sag, stress distribution, and plastic zone caused by variations in heterogeneity will increase. This study contributes to understanding the deformation and failure characteristics of heterogeneous roadways under dynamic loads and can be used to analyze heterogeneous roadways under dynamic loads.

Cracks are critical for the deformation and failure of rock masses, but the effects of real cracks are rarely considered when evaluating the stability and safety of practical engineering. This paper presents a study on the application of fractures in the Sanshandao Gold Mine. Field investigation and statistical analysis methods were adopted to obtain the distribution laws of the cracks. Laboratory tests, MATLAB programming, and simulation using the software, GDEM (Gdem Technology, Beijing, China, Co., Ltd.), were employed to study the mechanical behaviors of rock masses with real fractures after excavation. The main results are as follows: (1) Three sets of highly discrete cracks were developed in the study area. Their inclination and dip can be approximately considered to follow a Gaussian distribution or uniform distribution. They had close ties to the three faults developed in the mining area. (2) Compared with the model that did not consider cracks and the model processed by the equivalence idea, the surrounding rock deformation caused by excavation of the model that considered real cracks was larger than that of the former and smaller than that of the latter. However, its influence range was larger than that of the other two models. The results show that it is reasonable to use three sets of discrete cracks to characterize the fracture distribution of the surrounding rock. In the evaluation of roadway stability, it is not advisable to use the equivalence method to deal with all the cracks. Considering a part of the cracks that are compatible with the size of the calculation model, a relatively accurate evaluation can be obtained in terms of the deformation, failure, and permeability changes of the surrounding rock.

Based on the fluid-solid coupling theory, we study the stability of surrounding rock mass around underground oil storage in Huangdao, Shandong province, analyze the stress of the surrounding rock mass around three chambers and the displacement change of several key monitoring points after excavation and evaluate the stability of surrounding rock mass using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Research results show that the stress at both sides of the straight wall of cavern increases, especially obvious stress concentration forms at the corners of the cavern, and the surrounding rock mass moves towards the cavern after excavation. The stress and displacement of the surrounding rock mass will increase accordingly after setting the water curtains, but the change does not have a substantive impact on the stability of surrounding rock mass.

HuJiaDi tunnel construction of Dai Gong highway is troublesome, the surrounding-rock mass give priority to full to strong weathering basalt, surrounding rock integrity is poor, weak self-stability of surrounding rock, and tunnel is prone to collapse. In order to reduce disturbance, taking advantage of the ability of rock mass, excavation adopt the method of "more steps, short footage and strong support". The excavation method using three steps excavation, The excavation footage is about 1.2 ~ 1.5 m; The surrounding rock bolting system still produce a large deformation after completion of the first support construction, it shows that the adopted support intensity cannot guarantee the stability of the tunnel engineering. Using ABAQUS to simulate tunnel excavation support, optimizing the support parameters of the tunnel, conducting comparative analysis with Monitoring and Measuring and numerical simulation results, it shows that the displacement - time curves have a certain consistency in numerical simulation of ABAQUS and Monitoring and Measuring.

The problem about the stability of tunnel surrounding rock is always an important research object of geotechnical engineering, and the right or wrong of the result from stability analysis on surrounding rock is related to success or failure of an underground project. In order to study the deformation rules of weak surrounding rock along with lateral pressure coefficient and burying depth varying under high geostress and discuss the dynamic variation trend of surrounding rock, the paper based on the application of finite difference software of FLAC3D, which can describe large deformation character of rock mass, analog simulation analysis of surrounding rock typical section of the class II was proceeded. Some conclusions were drawn as follows: (1) when burying depth is invariable, the displacements of tunnel surrounding rock have a trend of increasing first and then decreasing along with increasing of lateral pressure coefficient. The floor heave is the most sensitive to change of lateral pressure coefficient. The horizontal convergence takes second place. The vault subsidence is feeblish to change of lateral pressure coefficient. (2) The displacements of tunnel surrounding rock have some extend increase along with increasing of burying depth. The research conclusions are very effective in analyzing the stability of surrounding rock of Yunling tunnel. These are going to be a reference to tunnel supporting design and construction.

The stability of the surrounding rock masses of underground powerhouses is always emphasized during the construction period. With the general trends toward large-scale, complex geological conditions and the rapid construction progress of underground powerhouses, deformation and failure issues of the surrounding rock mass can emerge, putting the safety of construction and operation in jeopardy and causing enormous economic loss. To solve these problems, an understanding of the origins and key affecting factors is required. Based on domestic large-scale underground powerhouse cases in the past two decades, key factors affecting the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock mass are summarized in this paper. Among these factors, the two most fundamental factors are the rock mass properties and in situ stress, which impart tremendous impacts on surrounding rock mass stability in a number of cases. Excavation is a prerequisite of surrounding rock mass failure and support that is classified as part of the construction process and plays a pivotal role in preventing and arresting deformation and failure. Additionally, the layout and structure of the powerhouse are consequential. The interrelation and interaction of these factors are discussed at the end of this paper. The results can hopefully advance the understanding of the deformation and failure of surrounding rock masses and provide a reference for design and construction with respect to hydroelectric underground powerhouses.

The deformation and failure of tunnel surrounding rock is the result of tunnel excavation disturbance and rock stress release. When the local stress of surrounding rock exceeds the elastic limit of rock mass, the plastic analysis of surrounding rock must be carried out to judge the stability of tunnel. In this study, the Lade–Duncan yield criterion is used to calculate the analytic solutions for the surrounding rock in a tunnel, and the radius and displacement of the plastic zone are deduced using an equilibrium equation. The plastic zone radius and displacement based on Lade–Duncan criterion and Mohr–Coulomb criterion were compared by using single-factor analysis method under the different internal friction angles, in situ stresses, and support resistances. The results show that the solutions of the radius and displacement of plastic zone calculated by the Lade–Duncan criterion are close to those of Mohr–Coulomb criterion under the high internal friction angle and support resistance or low in situ rock stress; however, the radius and displacement of the plastic zone calculated by the Lade–Duncan criterion are larger under normal circumstances, and the Lade–Duncan criterion is more applicable to the stability analysis of the surrounding rock in a tunnel.

The right bank underground powerhouse of Houziyan hydropower station is a typical deep-buried type with high geostress and complicated geological conditions. To monitor and analyze the stability of surrounding rock mass during continuous excavation of the powerhouse excavation and locate the potential failure zones, an ESG (Engineering Seismology Group) microseismic monitoring system manufactured in Canada was installed in April, 2013. The wave velocity of the monitoring system was determined through fixed blasting tests. And the average location error is the minimum while P-wave velocity is 5700m/s, less than 10m and meeting the system request. By combining the temporal and spatial distribution regularity of microseimic events with field excavation, micro-crack clusters and potential instability zones were identified and delineated. The results will provide a reference for later excavations and supports of the underground powerhouse. Furthermore, a new monitoring method can also be supplied for the stability analysis of surrounding rock mass in deep-buried underground powerhouses.

In the process of underground cavern excavation, the existence of the interlayer shear zones or large faults often makes the surrounding rock tend to be unstable or even deformed. Under the influence of interlayer shear zone C2, different degrees of deformation and failure occurred in many parts during the excavation of the Baihetan left bank underground powerhouse. Based on field monitoring and numerical calculation, this paper studies the deformation and failure characteristics of the rock mass with C2 in the whole excavation process and the failure mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that C2 has poor mechanical properties. In the process of excavation, it mainly induces two failure modes: rock collapse and shear deformation, which specifically leads to rock collapses, large deformation and shotcrete cracking in the main powerhouse, and shear deformation in the omnibus bar caves. In addition, the similarities and differences between this study and other studies on the deformation and failure of surrounding rock of underground powerhouse in recent years are discussed, and the relevant treatment measures for C2 are given. The above research results can be a reference for other related studies.

Based on geologic condition of one tunnel surrounding rock mass, systematic numerical tests had been carried out to study the stability of surrounding rock mass with different distributions of weak intercalated rock by the FEM software ABAQUS and strength reduction finite element method. Some quantificational results about the stability of surrounding rock mass were summarized. And the safety factor and latent slip surface were worked out. The stability of surrounding rock mass was judged by strength reduction finite element method. According to the analysis above, it’s known that the discrepancy of two rules is small; the safety factor is the lowest when weak intercalated rock in vault, and when at bottom, it’s higher than that of in vault. The conclusion can be used to guide the procedure of construction and ensure the safety.

Weak intercalated rock plays an important role in the stability of engineering rock mass. It controls the mechanism of deformation and breakage of rocks. Systematic numerical tests have been carried out to study the stability of surrounding rock mass with different distributions of weak intercalated rock has been analyzed by the FEM software ABAQUS. All of the numerical modelings are plain-strain type with elasto-plastic constitutive law and Drucker-Prager failure criterion. Some quantificational results about the influence of weak intercalated rock are summarized, especially the influence on the deformation, stress of surrounding rocks and plastic zone. Because of weak intercalated rock, the stress of surrounding rock appears the character of discontinuity. In addition, the distribution of plastic zone is also affected. When weak intercalated rocks exist in vault, spandrel and bottom, the situation of surrounding rock is comparatively unfavorable. These results have a certain role in guiding significance to the site selection and layout, the majorization of supporting system and the construction of tunnel of the same kind.
