In order to effectively solve the problem of gas concentration overrun in the upper corner of goaf and tailentry during the mining of panel 9303 in Anshun Coal Mine, based on the advantages of controllable trajectory and wide coverage area of directional drilling technology, high directional long boreholes are arranged in tailentry 9303 to extract pressure relief gas. Firstly, the principle of high directional long borehole drainage technology is introduced, and the fracture evolution of overlying strata is obtained through using numerical simulation, theoretical calculation, and field practice, and the fracture evolution range is determined to be 6–12.69 m, and rationality of fracture height obtained by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation is verified by the method of field borehole peep observation. Through the analysis, it is concluded that the best location of the final hole is within the range of 6–12.69 m of the roof of coal seam 9#. The field practice has proved that the final hole position of the high directional long borehole is arranged at 12 m from the roof of coal seam 9#, and the average gas extraction concentration can reach 40%–50% after the borehole enters the stable extraction stage, the purity of gas extraction is up to 8.5 m3/min, and the gas concentration in the upper corner of panel 9303 is stable below 0.5% during mining, which achieves good gas drainage and control effect and provides a new way for gas control under similar geological conditions.

How to quickly eliminate outburst in long-distance through-coal seam tunnels is one of the major challenges faced by the tunnel industry in mountainous areas. Compared with coal mine rock crosscut coal uncovering, the work surrounding the rock of through-coal seam tunnels has a high degree of breakage, large cross-section of coal uncovering, and tight time and space. In this paper, a method of networked slotting in long-distance through-coal seam tunnels for rapid pressure relief and outburst elimination is proposed. Based on this method, the corresponding mathematical governing equations and numerical simulation models have been established. The optimal borehole arrangement spacing and the slot arrangement spacing obtained by numerical optimization are 2.85 m and 3.1 m, respectively. Field gas production data of through-coal seam tunnels show that compared with the traditional dense-borehole gas extraction, the method of networked slotting in long-distance through-coal seam tunnels for rapid pressure relief and outburst elimination can shorten the extraction time by about 66%, the net quantity of peak extraction is increased by 3.55 times, and the total quantity of gas extraction when reaching the outburst prevention index is increased by 1.26 times, which verifies the feasibility of this method and the reliability of numerical simulation results. This study could be used as a valuable example for other coal deposits being mined under similar geological conditions.

Based on the geological conditions of 6# coal seam and 8# coal seam in Xieqiao Coal Mine, to determine reasonable entry layout of lower seam in multi-seam mining, alternate internal entry layout, alternate exterior entry layout and overlapping entry layout were put forward and simulated by FLAC3D. Then stress distribution and displacement characteristics of surrounding rock were analyzed in the three ways of entry layout, leading to the conclusion that alternate internal entry layout is a better choice for multi-seam mining, for which makes the entry located in stress reduce zone and reduces the influence of abutment pressure of upper coal seam mining to a certain extent,. And the mining practice of Xieqiao Coal Mine tested the results, which will offer a beneficial reference for entry layout with similar geological conditions in multi-seam mining.

Coal seam permeability is one of the key factors influencing the gas extraction efficiency, which is of great significance to reduce coal and gas dynamic disasters in gassy coal mines. Hydraulic slotting technique is an effective method to stimulate the coal reservoir, but the selection of slotting key parameters has great impact on gas extraction efficiency. For this reason, the hydraulic slotting model was established by using FLAC3D software to analyze the stress distribution before and after slotting. Then, the influence of borehole diameter, slotting width, and slotting length on coal seam stress relief is also discussed. The results show that the slotting width has a great influence on the stress relief of the coal seam, while the borehole diameter and slotting length have no obvious influence on that. Based on the results of numerical simulation, field tests were carried out in Sangshuping NO.2 coal mine. The results show that the coal seam stress can be fully released, resulting in the improvement of coal seam permeability. The gas extraction efficiency can be highly enhanced by hydraulic slotting. This research achievement provides the guidance basis for high-stress water jet slotting technology with adaptive selection of slotting parameters in different geological conditions.

Abstract The prevention of gas overrun in the panel is one of the key issues on green mining. In this paper, a physical goaf model was established based on the geological production conditions of a coal seam in a coal mine in Henan Province, and the combined drainage technology by burying and spilling pipeline in the upper corner was proposed. The Fluent software was used to simulate the changes of gas mass fraction and flow field distribution when the gas is extracted from the goaf without the gas pipeline, with a single buried pipeline, and with the combination of buried and spilled pipelines. Analysis and simulation showed that in the absence of drainage pipelines, the gas concentrations in both the return airway and the upper corner are up to 1.2%, which failed to meet the gas prevention and control standard on the mine. In the case of gas drainage with a single buried pipeline, the average gas concentration in the return airway was 0.7%, and only the gas concentration in the upper corner was up to 1.1%, which failed to meet the gas control standards on the mine’s panel. However, the maximum gas concentration in the combined drainage was reduced from 1.1% to 0.6%, which indicates that the technology can greatly reduce gas concentration, but there is still a gap from the mine’s gas control standard. Therefore, the impacts of the lengths of pipelines buried in different goafs on the gas drainage effect in the goaf were studied, and it was concluded that the reasonable length of pipelines buried in the goaf under the geological conditions was 20 m. This technology not only solves the problem of gas overrun in the panel but also realizes the utilization of gas resources in the goaf. The research results are of guiding significance for pipeline laying and the drainage technology in the upper corners on the U-shaped ventilation panel.

Abstract Slicing fully mechanized caving mining now is a common high-efficiency mining method for ultra-thick coal seams. However, effective gas control has remained a difficulty in fully mechanized top-coal caving mining of low permeability ultra-thick coal seams. This study focused on mining of the #9-15 coal in Liuhuanggou Coal Mine, Xinjiang Province, China, and combined theoretical analyses and field test results for exploring comprehensive gas control methods for fully mechanized caving of low permeability ultra-thick coal seams. The No. (9-15)06 panel is a top slicing panel of the #9-15 coal with a mining height of 9 m, and the No. (4-5)02 goaf is located on the top of the panel. Through analysis, gas emissions in the No. (9-15)06 panel were mainly sourced from the coal wall, caving of top coal, goaf, and neighboring coal seams. A comprehensive gas control method based on source separation was proposed, which combined gas pre-drainage along the coal seam, high-position drilling on the top, pre-burial of pipes in the goaf, and pressure-balancing ventilation. Considering the poor gas pre-drainage effect for low permeability coal seams, the permeability of the coal seam was enhanced using hydraulic fracturing. According to coal seam and crustal stress distribution characteristics, the arrangement of the boreholes and backward segmented fracturing technology were designed. Field data show that coal underwent remarkable pre-fracturing under hydraulic fracturing. Mean gas pre-drainage from the boreholes was enhanced by nearly 4 times compared to the pre-hydraulic fracturing state. Finally, using the proposed comprehensive control method based on the gas sources, field tests were performed in the No. (9-15)06 panel. Field measurement data demonstrate that gas concentration in the return airflow fluctuated within a range of 0.05%~0.35%, i.e., gas concentration did not exceed the standard. The proposed gas control method can provide insightful reference for the other similar projects.

In view of the ground drilling of the N2206 working face in Shanxi Wangzhuang Coal Mine, the gas concentration is low and the extraction effect is not good. Fluent computational fluid dynamics software was used to simulate the ground extraction drilling position of the N2206 working face in the goaf (the distance from the top of the coal seam and the distance from the return to the wind). The numerical simulation results show that when the final hole of the ground extraction hole in the goaf is 16 m from the roof of the coal seam and the distance from the return air is 45 m, the extraction effect is optimal. The average extraction gas volume is 9.78 m3/min, and the average extraction gas concentration is 43.95%, the best extraction effect is obtained. After optimizing the ground drilling position in the goaf and combining with the site implementation, the maximum gas scouring amount of the extraction is 12.59 m3/min, which is 3.42 m3/min higher than the original. The maximum gas concentration of extraction was 63.54%, which was 28.82% higher than the original. After optimization, the gas concentration of the extraction is more than 30%, and the extraction effect is very good. Field application results further validate the reliability of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results.

In order to solve the problem of difficult gas extraction in coal mine, a method of gas extraction from coal seam by interval hydraulic flushing is put forward. Based on the coal seam gas occurrence conditions of 7609 working face in Wuyang Coal Mine, the numerical simulation research on gas drainage by ordinary drilling and hydraulic flushing drilling was carried out by using COMSOL numerical simulation software. The results show that with the increase of hydraulic flushing coal quantity, the effective gas drainage radius also increases. The effective extraction radius of ordinary drilling is 0.5 m, and the effective extraction radius is 1.0 m, 1.2 m and 1.3 m respectively when the coal flushing quantity is 0.5t/m, 1.0t/m and 1.5t/m. As multiple boreholes are drained at the same time, the boreholes will affect each other, which will reduce the gas pressure and increase the effective drainage radius, the spacing between boreholes can be greater than twice the effective drainage radius of a single borehole when arranging boreholes. And the smaller the flushing interval, the more uniform the gas pressure reduction area. According to the numerical simulation results, the ordinary drilling and 1.0t/m interval hydraulic flushing test were carried out in the field. Through observation and analysis, the gas concentration of the interval hydraulic flushing drilling module was increased by 31.2% and the drainage purity was increased by 5.77 times compared with the ordinary drilling module. It shows that the interval hydraulic flushing drilling can effectively improve the gas drainage effect.

In order to solve the technical problem of gob-side entry retaining in inclined coal seam, combined with the practical mining conditions in a certain mine, this paper adopts the discrete element method, applies numerical simulation to analyze inclined coal seam gob-side entry retaining with three different supporting ways, and studies surrounding rock deformation characteristics of gob-side entry retaining. The research results show that the filling body upper boundary for right side can control the roadway surrounding rock deformation better compared with the boundary is used as the hypotenuse; Meanwhile, the pressure of surrounding rock of coal seam gob-side entry retaining is mainly from the impact of the immediate roof natural fall of the upper goaf tilt and the weight of caving coal gangue and coal seam of immediate roof above; According to the surrounding rock deformation characteristics of coal seam remain gateway along goaf, it is determined to use combined supporting method of concrete filling in roadway sides and anchor wire rope supporting inside the roadways, providing the design basis of gob-side entry retaining in coal seam for the similar geological conditions.
