Interferon-induced protein 44-like (IFI44L) gene is a type I interferon-stimulated gene (ISG) that plays a critical role in antiviral activity and constitutes a promising diagnostic marker. However, its precise role and function in tuberculosis have not been unveiled. This study showed that IFI44L acts as an antimicrobial target and positive modulator in human macrophages. Knockdown of IFI44L led to increased Mycobacterium tuberculosis intracellular survival. Moreover, IFI44L was significantly upregulated, and it restricted the intracellular survival of M. tuberculosis H37Rv strains at 72 h after rifampicin treatment. Individuals with cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) were found to have significantly higher IFI44L expression after 6 months of rifampicin therapy than after only 1 month. These results demonstrated that IFI44L induced positive regulation and clearance of M. tuberculosis from human macrophages. This antimicrobial activity of IFI44L makes it a possible target for therapeutic applications against M. tuberculosis.

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) selectively express Toll-like receptor (TLR)–7 and TLR-9, which allow them to rapidly secrete massive amounts of type I interferons after sensing nucleic acids derived from viruses or bacteria. It is not completely understood how development and function of pDCs are controlled at the transcriptional level. One of the main factors driving pDC development is the ETS factor Spi-B, but little is known about its target genes. Here we demonstrate that Spi-B is crucial for the differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells into pDCs by controlling survival of pDCs and its progenitors. In search for Spi-B target genes, we identified the antiapoptotic gene Bcl2-A1 as a specific and direct target gene, thereby consolidating the critical role of Spi-B in cell survival.

Abstract We propose that the onset and progressive destructive action of cancer within an individual bears a profound and striking similarity to the onset and progressive human-engendered destruction of global ecosystems and the extinction of entire species. Cancer in the human body and our human role in planetary, especially biotic, degradation are uncannily similar systems. For starters, they are the only two known complex systems where a discrete component changes its normal ecological role and function—turning on and potentially killing its host, and in so doing, itself. Both are “hostile takeovers.” Clearly, humans are integral to both systems. With cancer we are the host and victims of the rogue behavior of what starts out as a normal, healthy, and functionally important part of our bodies. With the biodiversity crisis, we are the part of the system that has changed, expanded, and proven so destructive to the system in which we live. We argue that given that these threats to our bodies and Earth are both essentially ecological diseases, understanding the critical role of ecological interdependencies for avoiding both cancer’s and humankind’s destruction of their respective homes should hopefully promote better stewardship of both by the only animal capable of recognizing the problems—us.

This research is a qualitative research using the phenomenological method. The research sample is women – therefore called the Rifa’iyah women – who make batik in Rifa’iyah community in the district of Batang, Central Java. Data collection techniques are applied by conducting interviews and observation guidelines. Data analysis techniques are used by using descriptive analysis. Women in the Rifa’iyah community have a prominent role to play in the productivity of batik. The Rifa’iyah people place batik not only as an economic commodity but also as a place for women in the public sphere, no longer only in the domestic area. The Rifa’iyah batik is not as popular as Pekalongan batik. It is because of the distribution of the Rifai’yah batik is exclusively moving between the Rifai’yah people and the village of Kalipucang Wetan, Batang, Central Java. The tradition of making batik in the Rifa’iyah community is carried out by the Rifa’iyah women who are santriwati1 from the Rifa’iyah Islamic boarding school. Batik with a characteristic motif of the Rifa’iyah can be sustainable until now because of the role of women in regenerating batik skills. Based on the results of the study, the data show that the Rifa’iyah women have a critical role in the development and growth of the Rifa’iyah batik as a form of collective memory that handed down from generation to generation. Moreover, the Rifa’iyah women have the role and function of the development and growth of the Rifa’iyah batik. Therefore, it is recommended to the young generation of the Rifa’iyah to always preserve the Rifa’iyah batik so that it is increasingly known by the wider scope of society.

The epithelium plays a critical role in the maintenance of laryngeal health. This is evident in that laryngeal disease may result when the integrity of the epithelium is compromised by insults such as laryngopharyngeal reflux. In this article, we will review the structure and function of the laryngeal epithelium and summarize the impact of laryngopharyngeal reflux on the epithelium. Research investigating the ramifications of reflux on the epithelium has improved our understanding of laryngeal disease associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux. It further highlights the need for continued research on the laryngeal epithelium in health and disease.

Kata kunci: Pengelolaan, SWOT IFAS-EFAS, WilayahABSTRACTPort was supporting facility of regional growth center in the process of regional economic development. Sabang free port was directed as the center of regional economic growth and expected to raise the economy of sabang. Problems faced by sabang free port was yet optimal role and function in supporting the economy of the region. This study aimed to determine the role of sabang free port in supporting the economic development of sabang. The covered material scope included roles of sabang free port, determining the potentials and problems and efforts of increasing the role of sabang free port. The method of analysis was descriptive analysis with qualitative and quantitative approach. The analytical tool used was the swot ifas-efas analysis. The analysis results showed in the period of 4 (four) years from 2010 until 2013, sabang free port was not optimal in carrying out its role yet, so it requires development strategies with agressive maintenance strategy approach, which is internal consolidation strategy by improving vulnerability factors to maximize the utilization of opportunities. Keywords:, Management, Regional, SWOT IFAS-EFAS
