Evaluation of swelling behavior is important for designing structures in expansive soils areas, especially for highway that the swelling pressure generated upon pavement and retaining structures in both vertical and horizontal directions due to infiltration. In this study, modification was made on unsaturated consolidation oedometer to provide synchronized measurement of vertical swelling strain (VSS) and lateral pressure (LP) of expansive soil under constant net normal stress and controlled matric suction. Vertical swelling (VS) test and lateral swelling (LS) test were conducted to investigate the anisotropic swelling behavior. The influence of mean net stress and net stress ratio on VSS was investigated, and the anisotropic swelling behavior of unsaturated expansive soil was characterized using anisotropic swelling ratio. The results show that the VSS nonlinearly decreased as the mean net stress increased and increased as the net stress ratio increased. The expansive soil would rapidly enter the passive state due to lateral swelling pressure under relatively low surcharge, with major principal axis rotating from vertical direction to lateral direction, which advances the possibility of passive failure for light retaining structures. The anisotropic swelling behavior objectively exists and varies with matric suction and net normal stress, which should not be ignored for engineering application.

The properties of unsaturated expansive soil were analyzed, and the shortcomings of present methods which are explored to calculate the active earth pressure of unsaturated expansive soil on the retaining structure were discussed. Based on Coulomb’s earth pressure theory, a calculation formula of active earth pressure of unsaturated expansive soil was proposed taking into account of the swelling pressure parameters according to the condition of static equilibrium of sliding soil. The formula has simple composition and derivation process, is convenient for application, and the example shows that this method is reasonable.

Shear strength and dilative characteristics of a re-compacted completely decomposed granite (CDG) soil are studied by performing a series of single-stage consolidated drained direct shear tests under different matric suctions and net normal stresses. The axis-translation technique is applied to control the pore-water and pore-air pressures. A soil-water retention curve (SWRC) is obtained for the CDG soil from the equilibrium water content corresponding to each applied matric suction value for zero net normal stress using a modified direct shear apparatus. Shear strength increases with matric suction and net normal stress, and the failure envelope is observed to be linear. The apparent angle of internal friction and cohesion intercept increase with matric suction. A greater dilation angle is found at higher suctions with lower net normal stresses, while lower or zero dilation angles are observed under higher net normal stresses with lower suctions, also at a saturated condition. Experimental shear strength data are compared with the analytical shear strength results obtained from a previously modified model considering the SWRC, effective shear strength parameters, and analytical dilation angles. The experimental shear strength data are slightly higher than the analytical results under higher net normal stresses in a higher suction range.

Deformation of expansive soil subgrade depends on moisture content. Anti-seepage measure of unsaturated expansive soil was carried out using ABAQUS as for the influence of atmosphere. The results show that there is large change in water content using anti-seepage measure measure. After using anti-seepage measure, range of water content decreases. At the same time, range of water content value obviously decreases with the increase of the depth of seepage control. Therefore, damage of pavement caused the deformation can decrease by seepage control measure. The results could be used for engineering design and numerical calculation.

The hydroxy-aluminum solution is prepared by alkali neutralization titration and the subsequent cross-linking tests are designed by mixing the hydroxy-aluminum solution and expansive soil, followed by the discussion on the influence of the molar ratio of OH- to Al3+ and ratio of total aluminum to expansive soil on the swelling behavior of the cross-linked soil. The free swelling ratio of the cross-linked soil decreased significantly, indicating that the main aluminum species that changes the expansion properties of the cross-linked soil is [Al13]7+.
