Sustainable development has increasingly become a primary concern of governments in the stage of high-quality economic development. Taking as an example Guangdong Province, China, where development and polarization coexist, this study uses a Vector Autoregressive(VAR) model to examine the relationship between higher education, technological innovation, and economic growth, and then uses the Coupling Coordination (CC) model to evaluate the developing coordination of subsystems where the above three elements are located; furthermore, it summarizes the mechanisms and corresponding paths of higher education on the quantity and quality of economic growth and illustrates the interactive relationships, the dynamic mechanisms, and the influencing factors. The results show that there is a dynamic interaction mechanism between higher education, technological innovation, and regional economy. The effect of this mechanism is enhanced in developed areas and with an obvious circle cumulative effect, while partly inhibited in undeveloped areas and with less or no circle cumulative effect. Therefore, on the path towards high-quality development, endogenous development models should be formulated and strengthened by developing higher education and constructing an innovation system, especially in the undeveloped areas. Higher education should be more in the regional development framework and targeted at the interaction and synergy in the regional socioeconomic system.

The author argues that opportunities to upgrade the skills of the working population in India should be increased to enable people to adapt to a knowledge- and technology-intensive economy. The lack of such opportunities has been adversely affecting economic growth and well-being. Investments in high-quality and relevant educational programmes at all levels should be increased, with an emphasis on self-sustaining means of funding which are possible in the liberalized fiscal and financial regimes. To the extent that higher education activities are economic in nature and reward the beneficiaries, the costs of services should accordingly be recovered. The implementation of self-financing measures would, however, require the creation of a conducive policy environment through consensus building among the stakeholders to improve the responsiveness of educational systems to the manpower requirements of the emerging Indian economy, and thus to make it efficient and competitive and able to exploit new opportunities to its advantage.

This study argues that the coupling between higher education, economic growth, and innovation ability is of great significance for regional sustainable development. Through the experience of Jiangsu Province in China, this study establishes a coupling coordination evaluation index system and applies the coupling coordination model to evaluate interactive relationships among the three. It finds that during 2007–2017, the level of coupling of 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu was increasing over time, which fully verified the previous scholars’ view that the three can improve each other over a long period. However, this study finds that there are obvious differences within Jiangsu. Inadequate investment in higher education has become a crucial constraint on sustainable economic growth in northern and central Jiangsu, which are backward regions of Jiangsu. By contrast, in southern Jiangsu, which is the advanced region of Jiangsu, although the resources of higher education are abundant the growth of innovation ability cannot support sustained economic growth well. Thus, the quality of higher education should be improved to meet the needs of the innovation-based economy. Accordingly, cross-regional cooperation and balanced investment in higher education are the keys to practicing a balanced and sustained regional development. The results of this study’s coupling coordination analysis and evaluation can serve as a reference for governments in enhancing regional sustainable development.

This study aims to explore the connection between the potential effects of energy consumption and technological innovation on economic growth in China from 1980 to 2018. The Non-Linear Autoregressive Distributive Lag (NARDL) econometric approach reveals an asymmetric connection between technological innovation, energy consumption, and economic growth in China from 1980 to 2018. The empirical results also reveal that a 1% decrease in energy consumption would imperatively decline economic growth by 12.5%. Moreover, a 1% upsurge in trademark applications improves economic growth by 8.2%. For the case of China, this study reveals that a large portion of the energy was used by families, which is regarded as a non-contributing element to the economy of China. This study suggests that the promotion and production of energy-efficient processes and products is necessary in order to make a more significant step toward sustainable development. The empirical findings also suggest that the Chinese government should regulate suitable policies aimed at promoting energy efficiency and the control of inefficient energy uses.

The main point of the article is to analyze the essence of the phenomena of economism and commercialization in the system of higher education. Economism is seen as a part of globalization of education. It is noted that scientists argue that investments in education lead to the economic growth, reduce the income inequality and increase employment. It is worth noting that the processes of economization belong to the most important factors of the economic development of the country and cause social changes. Education is considered as a powerful factor of social development, social and economic progress and sustainable development of the social system. The aim of the article is to represent the phenomena of commercialization and economism in the system of higher education throughout the methods of sociological knowledge. It is mentioned that commercialization is one of the tendencies of education system change.

Based on China’s provincial panel data from 1990 to 2017 and the improved Lucas, Nelson & Phelps model, the Spatial Dubin Model is used to test the spatial effects of higher education and human capital quality. The results showed that high-level human capital, characterized by higher education and urban labor income index, indirectly promoted local economic growth through technological innovation. There was also a “local-neighborhood” synergy effect. The neighborhood effect was manifested in that it affected the economic development of neighbors by promoting technological catch-up. After considering the quality factor, both the local and neighborhood effects were enhanced. From a regional perspective, higher education in the Yangtze River Delta, where the level of economic development is relatively high, was manifested as a spatial spillover effect of technological innovation and the neighborhood effect in the northeastern Bohai Rim and the Pearl River Delta was manifested as a technological catch-up.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify critical gaps in the conceptualization and interpretation of sustainability by investigating the postgraduate research (theses and dissertations) conducted with a reference to sustainability in Turkish higher education institutions and synthesizing the underlying themes and trends pertaining to sustainability issues in the local discourse. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts a mixed-method design. The sample (n=343) consists of the theses and dissertations conducted over a ten-year period in Turkish universities. Data analysis procedures include a quantitative investigation through numbers to address the level of value attached to postgraduate research on sustainable development; a content analysis on the focus and scope of each study to determine prevalent sustainability themes and dimensions frequently addressed in the studies; and a collocation analysis conducted on the texts of the studies to depict linguistic and cultural connotations of sustainable development in the local discourse and key terms that frequently collocate with sustainable development in the Turkish context. Findings Neither a sufficient number of direct references to sustainability nor a substantial increase in the number of studies throughout the decade is depicted. Only one-third of Turkish universities steer postgraduate research on sustainability, which is not evenly distributed to various institutions across the country. Three-quarters of the studies are conducted within economy-related and engineering-related programs. The social dimension of sustainability is under-researched. The topics tend to ply between environmental and economic edges. Turkey, as a word, is collocated frequently with the concepts of external debt, current deficit, energy, policy, and EU. Linguistically, the concept of sustainable development is predominantly associated with economic growth in the majority of the studies. Sustainability is contextualized mostly with making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work. Originality/value The value of the paper lies in the paucity of studies tracking the research initiatives taken on sustainability, assessing research trends in postgraduate programs of higher education institutions, and looking into a global concept from a local perspective in a developing country, Turkey.

Based on the theoretical analysis of the relationship between China’s higher education input, technological innovation, and economic growth, this paper chooses the 1997–2015 sample data of China, and uses a vector auto regression (VAR) model to test the relationship between the three. The results show that educational input, technological innovation, and economic growth form an interaction mechanism featuring dynamic circulation. Higher education input and technological innovation are two important factors influencing economic growth. In the meantime, higher education input is an important source and driving force of technological innovation, and technological innovation will further promote economic growth. However, technological innovation has a delayed positive effect on economic growth, so higher education input demands a long-term view and thinking for quick success, and instant benefits should be avoided.

Abstract. The article examines the impact of information and communication support on the process of making quality management decisions aimed at achieving sustainable development of higher education institutions in the context of Ukraine’s integration into the European educational space. The essence of sustainable development of higher education institutions and the specifics of its achievement within competition of educational services in the market, which is especially acute in the conditions of European integration, are considered. The necessity of using effective information and communication support in the development of high-quality management decisions aimed at achieving sustainable development of higher education institutions is determined. The process of making managerial decisions is considered and the quality of making managerial decisions is characterized. The organizational aspects of making quality management decisions are determined. The sequence of actions on the decision of the problems arising in the course of activities of the higher education institutions is offered. The approaches to be considered in the course of accepting qualitative administrative decisions directed on the achievement of sustainable development of higher education institutions on the basis of management of information and communication maintenance of their activity are considered. The influence of people who make management decisions on their quality and effectiveness is determined. The requirements to the quality criteria of managerial decision-making, which are put forward in the development of economic and mathematical models of managerial decision-making aimed at achieving sustainable development of higher education institutions, are studied. Today, it is important to consider the problems of preserving the environment from macroeconomic positions, which enable to determine the main systemic causes of environmental degradation; identify those economic directions that affect the environment. This approach is especially relevant for countries and regions that have a specialization in raw materials. Purely environmental measures aimed at preserving nature will not have an effect without an environmentally balanced macroeconomic policy, since without taking into account and correcting the development of the entire economy and its sectors (fuel, energy, metallurgy, agrarian, etc.), the effect of direct environmental investments will be minimal. It is obvious that without the access of the nation to the trajectory of sustainable development it is problematic to ensure a high quality of economic growth. However, we have to determine that resourceproducing countries and regions are following another way – first the economic growth, and then purification and restoration of the environment. Here the methodological basis can be the approaches developed by international organizations and initiative groups in the field of environmental protection.

The advancement of sustainable competitiveness and its contribution to the sustainability of sustainable development are becoming increasingly important research topics in sustainability science. The main purpose of this study is to disseminate knowledge in the practice of entrepreneurship and to strengthen the theoretical foundation to support sound and appropriate decision making as well as to improve the performance of the business competitiveness. The main source of data material in this paper is the primary micro fundamental survey with path analysis model. The result of this study shows that technological innovation not only produces new products but can also be the best way to achieve advancement. New Product Development (NPD) is the output of technological innovation, and the best way that must be developed as a strong foundation for decision makers to achieve sustainable competitiveness progress is the new product development and institutional integration. If productivity and economic growth are the main keys to success in achieving sustainable competitiveness, the NPD and institutional integration is the main determinant of the progress of sustainable competitiveness. The conclusion of this study is that productivity and economic growth is not enough to be the main key of the strength of competitiveness, but it also requires collaboration from various fundamental factors and the NPD and institutional integration as a driving force, the best way, and the main determinant of the achievement of the performance progress of sustainable development competitiveness.
