Quality of service (QoS) is the measure of network service availability and transmission. There are many factors influencing QoS among which one is the increasing number of network service users. The increase in the number of network service users and communication traffic causes network congestion. And the traffic congestion results in delay or packet loss and jitter variation. As a result, an organization’s network quality deteriorates and or even becomes unavailable. Therefore, to deliver a high quality network service to the users, a solution that avoids network traffic congestion is needed. In this study, the causes for network traffic congestion and the best solutions to eliminate traffic congestion in a network with congestion management and avoidance using an integrated priority queue (PQ) and weighted fair queue (WFQ) packet scheduling algorithms is proposed.

The computer network service provider must provide a good network service. Service quality is the most important factor and must always be maintained properly. The quality of service can change depending on the number and characteristics of service users. This study optimizes the performance of existing computer networks, namely ordinary LAN networks with the application of VLANs. It is very important because the number of network users is increasing and will continue to increase, while the need for good service quality is very urgent. The results showed that VLANs can improve computer network performance from the system existing, namely LAN network.

To improve the quality of service and network performance for the Flash P2P video-on-demand, the prediction Flash P2P network traffic flow is beneficial for the control of the network video traffic. In this paper, a novel prediction algorithm to forecast the traffic rate of Flash P2P video is proposed. This algorithm is based on the combination of the ensemble local mean decomposition (ELMD) and the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH). The ELMD is used to decompose the original long-related flow into the summation of the short-related flow. Then, the GRACH is utilized to predict the short-related flow. The developed algorithm is tested in a university’s campus network. The predicted results show that our proposed method can further achieve higher accuracy than those obtained by existing algorithms, such as GARCH and Local Mean Decomposition and Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (LMD-GARCH) while keeping lower computational complexity.

Given the ubiquity of the burstiness present across many networking facilities and services, predicting and managing self-similar traffic has become a key issue owing to new complexities associated with self-similarity which makes difficult the achievement of high network performance and quality of service (QoS). In this study ANN model was used to model and simulate FCE Okene computer network traffic. The ANN is a 2-39-1 Feed Forward Backpropagation network implemented to predict the bursty nature of network traffic. Wireshark tools that measure and capture packets of network traffic was deployed. Moreover, variance-time method is a log-log scale plot, representing variance versus a non-overlapping block of size m aggregate variance level engaged to established conformity of the ANN approach to self-similarity characteristic of the network traffic. The predicted series were then compared with the corresponding real traffic series. Suitable performance measurements used were the Means Square Error (MSE) and the Regression Coefficient. Our results showed that burstiness is present in the network across many time scales. The study also established the characteristic property of a long-range dependence (LRD). The work recommended that network traffic observation should be longer thereby enabling larger volume of traffic to be capture for better accuracy of traffic modelling and prediction.

The evolution of wireless technology leads VoIP application to be a good preferred choice among mobile users. Customers can having a VoIP service while being mobile regardless of location, terminal, and it is independent of network access. It is believed to be an alternative to the PSTN and its service is expected to be as good as PSTN. In essence, QoS plays a crucial part in order to maintain the seamless service during the VoIP session. As wireless networks are prone to channel error and VoIP application is known to be a delay-sensitive application, network traffic congestion could easily affect the voice quality of VoIP. Therefore, the codec selection within the VoIP application must be improved so that the codec can operate at various bit rates in order to cater for different traffic conditions. In this paper, we explain how centralize codec switching can help user to communicate seamlessly. We use WiFi network traffic as an example scenario.

The existence of a 4G network in Tanjungpinang City has begun to be felt by the community. The number of 4G service users continues to increase, so optimal observation is needed on the quality of the 4G network. Analysis of 4G network performance can be obtained using the drive test method. This method is used to obtain network quality information in real terms in the field. In line with advances in drive test technology, it can be applied more easily, namely using G-NetTrack Pro software. The parameters measured to determine the quality of 4G networks in this study are SINR (Signal to Interference Noice Ratio), RSRP (Reference Signal Receives Power), RSRQ (Reference Signal Receives Quality). Location of the measurement in Tanjungpinang City with the drive test route is started from Ali Haji street– Basuki Rahmat street – Wiratno street - Sekarno Hatta street - Yos Sudarso street - Usman Harun street - POS street - Bakar Batu street - Brigjen Katamso street - MT Haryono street. The result shows 4G Telkomsel has a good quality with value RSRP -83.48 dBm, RSRQ -11.18 dB, SINR 6.71 dB.

Wireless security is the prevention of unauthorized access to computers using wireless networks .The trends in wireless networks over the last few years is same as growth of internet. Wireless networks have reduced the human intervention for accessing data at various sites .It is achieved by replacing wired infrastructure with wireless infrastructure. Some of the key challenges in wireless networks are Signal weakening, movement, increase data rate, minimizing size and cost, security of user and QoS (Quality of service) parameters... The goal of this paper is to minimize challenges that are in way of our understanding of wireless network and wireless network performance.

In this study, discrete choice models that combine different behavioural rules are estimated to study the visitors’ preferences in relation to their travel mode choices to access a national park. Using a revealed preference survey conducted on visitors of Teide National Park (Tenerife, Spain), we present a hybrid model specification—with random parameters—in which we assume that some attributes are evaluated by the individuals under conventional random utility maximization (RUM) rules, whereas others are evaluated under random regret minimization (RRM) rules. We then compare the results obtained using exclusively a conventional RUM approach to those obtained using both RUM and RRM approaches, derive monetary valuations of the different components of travel time and calculate direct elasticity measures. Our results provide useful instruments to evaluate policies that promote the use of more sustainable modes of transport in natural sites. Such policies should be considered as priorities in many national parks, where negative transport externalities such as traffic congestion, pollution, noise and accidents are causing problems that jeopardize not only the sustainability of the sites, but also the quality of the visit.

Video on demand (VoD) services such as YouTube have generated considerable volumes of Internet traffic in homes and buildings in recent years. While Internet service providers deploy fiber and recent wireless technologies such as 802.11ax to support high bandwidth requirement, the best-effort nature of 802.11 networks and variable wireless medium conditions hinder users from experiencing maximum quality during video streaming. Hence, Internet service providers (ISPs) have an interest in monitoring the perceived quality of service (PQoS) in customer premises in order to avoid customer dissatisfaction and churn. Since existing approaches for estimating PQoS or quality of experience (QoE) requires external measurement of generic network performance parameters, this paper presents a novel approach to estimate the PQoS of video streaming using only 802.11 specific network performance parameters collected from wireless access points. This study produced datasets comprising 802.11n/ac/ax specific network performance parameters labelled with PQoS in the form of mean opinion scores (MOS) to train machine learning algorithms. As a result, we achieved as many as 93–99% classification accuracy in estimating PQoS by monitoring only 802.11 parameters on off-the-shelf Wi-Fi access points. Furthermore, the 802.11 parameters used in the machine learning model were analyzed to identify the cause of quality degradation detected on the Wi-Fi networks. Finally, ISPs can utilize the results of this study to provide predictable and measurable wireless quality by implementing non-intrusive monitoring of customers’ perceived quality. In addition, this approach reduces customers’ privacy concerns while reducing the operational cost of analytics for ISPs.

Abstract This paper introduces a new scheme for road traffic management in smart cities, aimed at reducing road traffic congestion. The scheme is based on a combination of searching, updating, and allocation techniques (SUA). An SUA approach is proposed to reduce the processing time for forecasting the conditions of all road sections in real-time, which is typically considerable and complex. It searches for the shortest route based on historical observations, then computes travel time forecasts based on vehicular location in real-time. Using updated information, which includes travel time forecasts and accident forecasts, the vehicle is allocated the appropriate section. The novelty of the SUA scheme lies in its updating of vehicles in every time to reduce traffic congestion. Furthermore, the SUA approach supports autonomy and management by self-regulation, which recommends its use in smart cities that support internet of things (IoT) technologies.
