This text results of a conversation between Monica Tavares and Eduardo Navas about the act of remixing. It is a reflection on the subjects discussed in the articles delivered by the students of the course “Principles of Data Analysis and Remix” taught in March 2015 in the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts at USP, under responsibility of Professors Dr. Monica Tavares and Dr. Eduardo Navas. The course introduced basic principles of data visualization and their relation to the principles of remixing. An emphasis was placed on analyzing information, while also developing strong design skills. The relation between image and text was explored, which means that students learned how to analyze content and form while understanding their similarities and differences.

Data visualization is a very important aspect of data analysis and of presentation. Focusing on the latter, this paper discusses various elements of constructing graphs for publications. Bad and good graphs are compared, and a checklist with graphical elements to be used while creating graphs is proposed.

Abstract The purpose of this article is to compare two qualitative approaches that can be used in different researches: phenomenology and grounded theory. This overview is done to (1) summarize similarities and differences between these two approaches, with attention to their historical development, goals, methods, audience, and products (2) familiarize the researchers with the origins and details of these approaches in the way that they can make better matches between their research question(s) and the goals and products of the study (3) discuss a brief outline of each methodology along with their origin, essence and procedural steps undertaken (4) illustrate how the procedures of data analysis (coding), theoretical memoing and sampling are applied to systematically generate a grounded theory (5) briefly examine the major challenges for utilizing two approaches in grounded theory, the Glaserian and Straussian. As a conclusion, this overview reveals that it is essential to ensure that the method matches the research question being asked, helps the researchers determine the suitability of their applied approach and provides a continues training for the novice researchers, especially PhD or research students who lack solid knowledge and background experience in multiple research methods.

The d1Dplot and d2Dplot computer programs have been developed as user-friendly tools for the inspection and processing of 1D and 2D X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, respectively. d1Dplot provides general tools for data processing and includes the ability to generate comprehensive 2D plots of multiple patterns to easily follow transformation processes. d2Dplot is a full package for 2D XRD data. Besides general processing tools, it includes specific data analysis routines for the application of the through-the-substrate methodology [Rius et al. IUCrJ 2015, 2, 452–463]. Both programs allow the creation of a user compound database for the identification of crystalline phases. The software can be downloaded from the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source website and can be used free of charge for non-commercial and academic purposes.

Questionnaire Survey is one of the most popular methods in Social Science study, the process of which consists of three phases: data collection, analysis and representation. At present, the practical operations of the three phases are still backward, and the methods used in data analysis and statistic are still simple. This paper designed a Survey Analysis System based on data visualization, which can not only realize survey on the internet, but also brought data visualization into the phases of data analysis and representation, so as to help users to obtain and operate data visually and handily.

This study aims to examine the model of Islamic syncretism and variants ofKejawenteachings in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, based on historical-philosophical data analysis of the Sasangka Jatimanuscripts,completed within-depth interviews and observations on the living and religious practices of the Pangestufollwoers in Tulungagung, East Java, the results of the study indicate that there is a pointof similarities and differences between the essence of "theIslamic pillars " and "Jalan Rahayu" contained inthe book of Sasangka Jati. The equality of the essence of 'IslamicPillars ' and "Jalan Rahayu", can be seen from the creed, prayer, thanksgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage. From here then the insight of thinking of human beings becomes widelyopen. So that, the true knowledge can be ascantilever for religion. Spiritual awareness used to be a guide toknowledge, with the main goal being to obtain or attain the true sense of awareness.

In this work, we present the results of a research in which we aimed to evidence obstacles and advances in pre-service teachers’ conceptualization on a subject involving elementary Quantum Mechanics. We based our analysis on the theories due to David Ausubel and Gèrard Vergnaud to study Meaningful Learning patterns, both in predicative and operatory form of knowledge, of six students involved in a didactical intervention composed of six classes, in which we emphasized both similarities and differences between Classical and Quantum Physics. With this intervention, we intended to teach the concepts of Physical System, Dynamical Variables, State of a Physical System and Time Evolution. We guided our data analysis by the methodology of content analysis (Bardin, 2008) and it turned possible to map Meaningful Learning patterns involving the four concepts to which were associated a set of essential features (in the predicative stage) and a set of theorems-in-action (in the operatory stage) relating the aim-concepts in problem-solving or conceptual mapping.

The article considers methods of involving artificial intelligence in artistic practices. Based on the analysis of ways to use this technology in visual arts and music, the basic principles of working with artificial intelligence technology are identified, including: imitation of historical art, implemented in projects The Next Rembrandt and Choral; generative art, which is found in the works “Hyperbolic Composition І” and “Hyperbolic Composition ІІ” of S. Eaton and also in the AIVA program (Artificial Intelligence Virtual Artist). The importance of the mechanisms of neurobiology in the process of working with artificial intelligence on the example of the project “Neural Zoo” of S. Crespo, Iamus program, in which the development of musical material is based on the principle of evolution, is stated. In the application Endel and in the opera “Emotionally intelligent” Artificially Intelligent Brainwave Opera» of E. Perlman, a neural network is used to read information about the human condition and its further processing for modification into a sound landscape or image. The development of artificial intelligence and its use in artistic practices opens up new opportunities, expanding both the field of authors of artistic content and attracting new audience. This phenomenon provokes many issues, including: the ability to think artificially of artificial intelligence, the ability to create works of art without human intervention, as well as issues related to copyright.
