Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the analytical performance of the new colorimetric, automatic analyser, Seal AutoAnalyzer 3 High Resolution (Seal AA3 HR) (Seal Analytical, Wisconsin, USA) for urinary iodine measurement. Materials and methods: This study included testing of several analytical features of the method involving: imprecision (within-run %CVr, between- run %CVb and total laboratory precision %CVl), measurement uncertainty, carryover, linearity and method comparison, with 70 urine samples including the measuring range (20 - 700 μg/L). Results: Within-run, %CVb and %CVl of two control levels were 2.03% and 3.04%, 0.51% and 2.61%, and 2.09% and 4.01%, respectively. Carryover effect was less than 1%. The linearity was good in the range of urinary iodine values between 60 and 500 μg/L (R2 = 0.99). Good agreement of urinary iodine values was found between manual technique and Seal AA3 HR, using Passing-Bablok regression (y = 7.84 (- 3.00 to 15.29) + 0.95 (0.90 to 1.00) x) and Blant-Altman test. Cusum test for linearity indicates that there is no significant deviation from linearity (P > 0.1). Conclusions: The obtained results proved excellent precision, reproducibility and linearity, comparable to the already used, manual method. The New Seal AA3 HR automatic analyser is acceptable for urinary iodine measurement with very good analytical characteristics and can be used for urinary iodine epidemiological studies of the Croatian population.

ABSTRACTInvestigation of strongly distorted crystal structures caused by dislocations, stacking-faults etc. in both plastically deformed f.c.c. and b.c.c. metallic materials was performed by the analysis of the neutron diffraction line broadening. Measurements were realized by means of the high resolution triple-axis neutron diffractometer equipped by bent Si perfect crystals as monochromator and analyzer at the NPI Řež. The substructure parameters obtained in this manner are in good agreement with the results of X-ray diffraction analysis.

Context. The bulge globular clusters (GCs) are key tracers of the bulge, a central and ancient component of our Galaxy. It is essential to understand their formation and evolution to study that of the bulge, as well as their relationship with the other Galactic GC systems (halo and disk GCs). High-resolution spectroscopy is a powerful tool for such studies, allowing us to obtain a detailed chemical characterization and kinematics of the clusters and to compare their chemical patterns with those of their halo and disk counterparts. Aims. Our main goals are to obtain detailed abundances for a sample of seven red giant members of NGC 6528 in order to characterize their chemical composition and study the relationship of this GC with the bulge, and with other bulge, halo, and disk GCs. Moreover, we analyze this cluster’s behavior associated with the multiple-populations phenomenon. Methods. We obtained the stellar parameters and chemical abundances of light elements (Na, Al), iron-peak elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu), α-elements (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and heavy elements (Zr, Ba, Eu) in seven red giant members of NGC 6528 using high-resolution spectroscopy from FLAMES-UVES. Results. In six stars of our sample we obtained a mean iron content of [Fe/H] = − 0.14 ± 0.03 dex, in good agreement with other studies. We found no significant internal iron spread. We detected one candidate variable star, which was excluded from the mean in iron content, and derived a metallicity in this star of [Fe/H] = − 0.55 ± 0.04 dex. Moreover, we found no extended O-Na anticorrelation but instead only an intrinsic Na spread. In addition, NGC 6528 does not exhibit a Mg-Al anticorrelation, and no significant spread in either Mg or Al. The α and iron-peak elements show good agreement with the bulge field star trend. The heavy elements are slightly dominated by the r-process. The chemical analysis suggests an origin and evolution similar to that of typical old Galactic bulge field stars. Finally, we find remarkable agreement in the chemical patterns of NGC 6528 and another bulge GC, NGC 6553, suggesting a similar origin and evolution.

Abstract. Along a traverse through North Greenland in May 2015 we collected snow cores up to 2 m depth and analyzed their density and water isotopic composition. A new sampling technique and an adapted algorithm for comparing data sets from different sites and aligning stratigraphic features are presented. We find good agreement of the density layering in the snowpack over hundreds of kilometers, which allows the construction of a representative density profile. The results are supported by an empirical statistical density model, which is used to generate sets of random profiles and validate the applied methods. Furthermore we are able to calculate annual accumulation rates, align melt layers and observe isotopic temperatures in the area back to 2010. Distinct relations of δ18O with both accumulation rate and density are deduced. Inter alia the depths of the 2012 melt layers and high-resolution densities are provided for applications in remote sensing.

Abstract. A special high-resolution routine of the EISCAT radar has been used to investigate the structure and development of the poleward wall of a deep trough in electron density. The feature was tracked by the radar during a 7-hour period under very quiet geomagnetic conditions. The field-aligned nature of the structure enabled an estimate to be made of the inclination of the geomagnetic field above EISCAT that was in good agreement with the current model. Observations of narrow field-aligned enhancements in electron temperature demonstrated that the wall of this trough is a dynamic feature, reforming regularly as the electron density responds on a time scale of tens of minutes to energy input from soft-particle precipitation.

This paper presents radiocarbon results from a single Diploastrea heliopora coral from Vanuatu that lived during the Younger Dryas climatic episode, between ca. 11,700 and 12,400 calendar yr bp. The specimen has been independently dated with multiple 230Th measurements to permit calibration of the 14C time scale. Growth bands in the coral were used to identify individual years of growth. 14C measurements were made on each year. These values were averaged to achieve decadal resolution for the 14C calibration. The relative uncertainty of the decadal 14C data was below 1% (2σ). The data are in good agreement with the existing dendrochronology and allow for high-resolution calibration for most years. Variations in the fine structure of the 14C time series preserved in this specimen demonstrate sporadic rapid increases in the Δ14C content of the surface ocean and atmosphere. Certain sharp rises in Δ14C are coincident with gaps in coral growth evidenced by several hiatuses. These may be related to rapid climatic changes that occurred during the Younger Dryas. This is the first coral calibration with decadal resolution and the only such data set to extend beyond the dendrochronology-based 14C calibration.

AbstractWe present results from a new wide-field study of the NGC 5128 globular cluster system. We have obtained new high resolution images with the Magellan 6.4m + IMACS camera. Our images cover an area of 1.2x1.2 sq. degrees and have a seeing of 0.45″. This allows us to not only resolve most of the globular clusters (GCs) but also derive their structural parameters. These are combined with existing Washington photometry in order to select by metallicity. We present here results for a subsample of 359 GCs which includes all currently confirmed GC members of the system. Our derived sizes are in very good agreement with those derived from ACS data. We find, as expected, that the metal-rich GCs in the inner regions (r < 10′) are 26% smaller than their metal-poor components, but in the outer region this normal trend is reversed. We compare our GCs to previous results for GCs, UCDs, etc. in the luminosity - size plane and find substantial overlap between different types of objects, indicating more of a continuum in these properties.

The energies and intensities of 13 gamma rays in Re188 have been measured by studying their external conversion spectra with a high resolution beta-ray spectrometer. An analysis of the beta-ray spectrum reveals groups with end points 2116 kev. (79%) and 1961 kev. (20%), and several low energy groups whose total intensity is of the order of 1%. The observed data can be consistently accounted for in terms of a decay scheme involving the following levels of OS188: 0.0, 155.0, 633, 1086, 1306, 1461, 1765, 1941, and 1958 kev. This scheme is firmly supported by coincidence measurements. The spins of the first three levels listed are 0+, 2+, and 2+ and that of the 1461 kev. level is probably 0+.The decay of Re186 is accompanied by gamma rays of the following energies and quantum intensities: 122.9 kev. (0.6%), 137.2 kev. (10%), 630.8 kev. (0.024%), and 768.2 kev. (0.024%). These values are in good agreement with those quoted in the literature, except for the intensities of the last two radiations.

High resolution L x-ray emission spectra of Fe and Cu have been measured by 0.75 MeV/u H and He, and 0.73 MeV/u He, Si and Ar ion impacts with a crystal spectrometer. The x-ray transition energies in the Fe and Cu targets for Lι, Lη, Lα1,2, Lβ1 and Lβ3,4 diagram lines induced by light ion impacts are determined, which are in good agreement with those given in the reference. The difference in L x-ray emission spectra produced by H, He, Si and Ar ions is considered and the emission spectra for the Cu target are compared with the calculated ones based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. The origin of the broadening of the Lα1,2 line to the lower energy for Si and Ar ion impacts is attributed to one 2p plus one 3d electron vacancy production.
