The use of social media presents new religious groups with opportunities to assert themselves in contrast to established religious institutions. Intersections of church and cinema form a central part of this phenomenon. On one hand, many churches embrace digital media, from Hollywood clips in sermons to sermons delivered entirely via video feed. Similarly and overlapping with this use of media, churches in cinemas have emerged around the world as a new form of Sunday morning worship. This paper investigates intersections of church and cinema through case studies of two representative congregations. CityChurch, in Würzburg, Germany, is a free evangelical faith community that meets in a downtown Cineplex for Sunday worship. LCBC (Lives Changed by Christ) is one of the largest multi-sited megachurches on the American East Coast. While LCBC’s main campus offers live preaching, sermons are digitally streamed to the rest. Both CityChurch and LCBC exemplify growing numbers of faith communities that rely on popular musical and social media to 1) redefine local and global religious relationships and 2) claim identity as both culturally alternative and spiritually authentic. By engaging with international flows of worship music, films, and viral internet sensations, new media-centered faith communities like CityChurch and LCBC reconfigure established sacred soundscapes. CityChurch’s use of music and media strategically differentiates the congregation from neighboring traditional forms of German Christianity while strengthening connections to the imagined global evangelical community. LCBC creates what cultural geographer Justin Wilford dubs a “postsuburban sacrality” that carves out meaning from the banality of strip-mall-studded suburban existence. Analyzing the dynamics of music and media in these new worship spaces assumes growing importance as transnational music and media choices play an increasingly a central role in locally differentiating emergent worship communities from historically hegemonic religious neighbors.

Social media is one of the results of the development new media. It grows with a wide variety of information and technology applications and has a great demand by all levels of society. The use of social media can provide a dual effect on the social fabric of society, especially the youth, because youth are the active users of social media. Students as a young generation need to be prepared with digital media literacy skills to be able to use digital media intelligently and effectively. This study aims to determine the ability of the digital media literacy of students STIKOM LSPR Jakarta, in particularly of the usegae of social media. The research used the instrument of Social Competence Framework based on European Commission (2009) to determine the level of digital media literacy of students. The results showed that the media literacy of students STIKOM LSPR including medium level based on their social competence. Moreover, the result can be used as a foundation in creating digital media literacy education programs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to devise and then test a theoretical model to illustrate the effects of the increasing importance of social media on consumer behavior and market equilibrium in differentiated food industries. Design/methodology/approach The authors use game theory to model the strategic use of social media by firms producing high-value food products. The authors test the predictions of the theoretical model by means of a survey of 722 randomly selected Italian food consumers using an online questionnaire. Findings The model predicts that, as social media become more and more influential, consumers using the new media become more informed, and their concern about food quality attributes increases. At the same time, the consumers using mass media only receive less information and they prefer cheaper products to the high value one. As a result, the emergence of social media favours market segmentation and the hypotheses tested were: Social consumers are, on average, more informed than mass consumers and more concerned about environmental issues than mass consumers. The data support the theoretical model. Originality/value The paper contributes to the debate about the impact of information from interested sources on market equilibrium, providing an innovative analysis of the role of social media.

In this chapter, we investigate the ways in which national voluntary organizations have employed new digital media. We study in particular whether digitization seems to enable new organizational forms; if it contributes to new ways in which organizations can engage members and volunteers; and how the new digital media can contribute to, for example, public debate. We ask if organizations differ in such use, and whether certain types of organizations are more likely to use new forms of communication, both to inform members and to participate in the public. For instance, do organizations that were established after the rise of social media (digital natives) use new media differently than older organizations? Secondly, we investigate what kinds of barriers that can prevent the use of social media by such organizations Our findings initially point out that the use of internet and social media largely permeates all types of organizations in Norway, but that there are important differences between different organizations. Furthermore, we identify different dimensions in terms of the use of social media, with clear distinctions between public activities on the one hand and activity directed at members on the other. Finally, we find that a lack of resources is the main causal factor when it comes to the organizations that not use social media.

This article engages with the current debate on feminisms and digital media by looking at the tension between individualism and collective action. Drawing on an empirical research project involving girls, carried out in Italy and focusing on female processes of subjectivation in a postfeminist new media context, it will discuss constraints and opportunities shaped by the everyday use of social media. The article places itself in the latest trend of cyberfeminist studies, by analysing friendship relationships developed among girls in and through digital media. It also looks at how the mediated nature of social network sites offers room for the building of alliances among girls, and how this challenges online and offline gender norms. In doing so, the article reflects on the way female relationships change and are reworked in digital culture, thus giving a new meaning to the feminist concept of sisterhood.

The process of post-conflict reconstruction in Liberia involves an array of actors vying for power. Many of the key political and civic figures involved are former warlords, whose reigns of terror affected many they now work with and serve. By reframing themselves through social media these warlords have created new centers of power, embracing their new roles as public servants and renouncing past acts of terrorism. This article focuses on two of Liberia’s most notorious former warlords, Prince Johnson and Joshua Blahyi. Johnson, now Senator Johnson, was best known for swilling beer while he conducted the video-taped torture of President Doe. Joshua Blahyi, formerly General Butt Naked, who infamously drank children’s blood before running naked into battle, is now a born-again preacher with his own faith-based NGO. We argue that their use of social media has enabled them to reconstruct and reframe their ‘past lives’, ensuring these cannot become political liabilities.

This article explores the social media postings of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers on two different and unofficial Facebook groups. While scholars of armed forces and society have noted the growing importance that militaries have placed on digital media, there is little data regarding the unofficial uses and meanings that regular soldiers themselves make of social networking sites. With an anthropological focus on everyday experiences, we argue that the social media activity of IDF personnel highlights the quotidian aspects of military life in ways that reverberate beyond the strictly ideological or political facets of their service. Here, soldiers can express their frustrations with military bureaucracy, while also presenting a lighthearted (and positive) commentary on a shared rite of passage. This research opens a window into the lives and dilemmas of the first generation of Israeli soldiers to employ new media as a taken for granted aspect of their service.

Abstract The main purpose of this article is to present the results of research concerning the use of social media by companies from the SME sector in Podkarpackie Province. The article includes data obtained in the first stage of the study, which is a part of a research project on the use of social media in the area of creating the image of an organization / company as an employer.The survey covered the entire population of companies from the SME sector, which are registered in Podkarpackie Province (REGON database). The research phase, the results of which are presented in this article, mainly involved the analysis of data on companies from the SME sector in Podkarpackie Province in terms of their presence on the Internet (having an individual website, having company profiles on selected social networks). The results of the first stage of the study confirm that the companies see the potential of the online presence / functioning in social media (more and more companies have their own website, Facebook profiles). The dynamics of changes in this area is definitely not adequate to the pace of new media development. On the basis of preliminary results of further stages of the research, it can also be concluded that in the vast majority of cases, however, these are non-strategic and non-systematic activities.

AbstractTo understand the success of SKAM, the series’ innovative use of “social media” must be taken into consideration. The article follows two lines of argument, one diachronic, the other synchronic. The concept of remediation allows for a historical perspective that places the series in a longer tradition of “real time”-fictions and media practices that span from the epistolary novels of the 18th century by way of radio theatre and television serials to the new media of the 21st century. Framing the series within the current media ecology (marked by the connectivity logic of “social media”), the authors analyze how the choice of the blog as the drama’s media platform has formed the ways the series succeeded in affecting and mobilizing its audience. Given the long tradition of strong pedagogical premises in the teenager serials of publicly financed Norwegian television, the authors note the absence of any explicit media critical perspectives or didacticism. Nevertheless, the claim is that the media-practices of the series, as well as the actions and discourses of its followers (blogposts, facebook-groups, etc.), generate new insights and knowledge with regards to the series’ form, content, and practices.

Technology is developing rapidly, technology products are created to provide convenience to the community, which is new media. When through the development of technology, the spread of comics is also widely spread, comics that were originally using print media are now developing using digital media. To disseminate comic content, digital comic authors now using social media to promote their comics to a large extent. So digital comic authors need a strategy to disseminate digital comic content, attract readers, and get collaborative offers to raise their name. In this research the authors used a descriptive qualitative analysis method, to find out the strategies used by Ghosty's comic authors in spreading, and raising their names. The author collected data by interviewing the author of Ghosty's Comic, and his friends at once readers to get the data needed in this research. The results of this reserach illustrate that it is important to use strategies to create interesting digital comic content so that the Ghosty's comics can get collaborations such as Tokopedia, Orang Tua Group, Line Webtoon.Teknologi berkembang dengan pesat, banyak produk teknologi diciptakan untuk memberikan kemudahan pada masyarakat, salah satunya adalah media baru. Saat melalui perkembangan teknologi medium penyebaran komik juga meluas, komik yang semula menggunakan media cetak kini berkembang menggunakan media digital. Untuk menyebarkan konten komik, pengarang komik digital kini menggunakan media sosial untuk mempromosikan komiknya ke kalangan yang luas. Maka pengarang komik digital memerlukan sebuah strategi untuk melakukan penyebaran konten komik digital, menarik pembaca, dan mendapatkan tawaran kolaborasi untuk membesarkan namanya. Pada penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif analisis,  untuk mengetahui strategi yang digunakan pengarang komik Ghosty’s dalam menyebarkan, dan membesarkan namanya. Penulis mengumpulkan data dengan melakukan wawancara dengan pengarang komik Ghosty’s, dan teman sekaligus pembacanya untuk mendapatkan data yang diperlukan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menggambarkan bahwa pentingnya menggunakan strategi untuk membuat konten komik digital yang menarik sehingga dengan besarnya nama komik Ghosty’s bisa mendapatkan kolaborasi seperti Tokopedia, Orang Tua Group, Line Webtoon.

Abstract Social media is the main choice in establishing social interactions in cyberspace in this new media era. The Facebook application as one of the contemporary social media is widely used by Digital natives. As a creative generation in using technology, Digital natives use Facebook as a medium of communication today. Facebook users who are increasing and used continuously have formed a habit that eventually becomes a culture of communication. This research is a qualitative research with a constructivist paradigm that uses a virtual ethnographic research approach. Virtual ethnography is an approach that aims to observe behavior patterns, patterns of life and social relations in virtual life in cyberspace. This study is to determine the communication culture of Digital natives on the use of social media Facebook. And to find out the communication culture formed from the use of Facebook by Digital natives. Keywords: Culture, Communication, New Media, Facebook, Digital natives. Abstrak Media sosial menjadi pilihan utama dalam menjalin interaksi sosial di dunia maya pada era media baru ini. Aplikasi facebook sebagai salah satu media sosial kekinian banyak digunakan oleh Digital natives. Sebagai generasi kreatif dalam menggunakan teknologi, Digital natives memanfaatkan facebook sebagai media komunikasi saat ini. Pengguna facebook yang semakin meningkat dan digunakan secara terus menerus telah membentuk sebuah kebiasaan yang pada akhirnya menjadi budaya dalam berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis yang menggunakan pendekatan penelitian etnografi virtual. Etnografi virtual merupakan pendekatan yang bertujuan untuk mengamati pola-pola perilaku, pola kehidupan dan relasi sosial dalam kehidupan virtual di dunia maya (cyber) Penelitian ini hendak mengkaji tentang, perubahan dan budaya komunikasi Digital natives pada penggunaan facebook di era media baru, sedangkan Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah Untuk mengetahui budaya komunikasi Digital natives pada penggunaan media sosial facebook. Dan untuk mengetahui budaya komunikasi yang terbentuk dari penggunaan facebook oleh Digital natives. Kata Kunci : Budaya, Komunikasi, Media Baru, Facebook, Digital natives.
