Jealousy is a thriving theme in Abbasid poetry and narratives, but it is not confined to the realm of storytelling and poetic motifs; its meaning and boundaries are discussed from various points of view of Abbasid scholarship. In this article, explanations and definitions ofghayraas an emotion as well as cultural practice are investigated on the basis of a selection of Classical Arabic literary sources. It is a study of attitudes towards jealousy in literature that is predominantly normative, and hence excluding subjective experiences as they are expressed in poetry and anecdotal literature.

The review gives a write-up of the edition, its structure, composition and its material. The guidelines for teaching British literary Modernism, methods and concepts offered in the book are subject to a detailed analysis. The critical appraisal of its innovations, its tendency to extend and revise the canonical topics and the reading list, offer new points of view and unordinary approaches (in contrast with typical university curricula) is followed by critical remarks targeted at its weak points – poor reasoning and certain groundless pronouncements one sometimes comes across, principles that underlie the selection of material in particular chapters and paragraphs, correctness of style and conformity with the conventions of academic discourse. It is also emphasized that the book in question is a fascinating and enriching reading that will be duly appreciated by the students as well as colleagues and all readers interested in the British literary Modernism.

AbstractOne of the most striking aspects of Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf's Kurtág-Cycle (2001), is the abundant use of intertextual references: Mahnkopf includes references to compositions of his own, as well as to works of other composers (e.g. Mark Andre). He also refers to literary sources, such as texts by Borges and Nietzsche. In first instance, this article provides a detailed inventory of these many musical and extra-musical references. Second, we highlight some of these interconnections by zooming in on the relationships between the different compositions within the Kurtág-Zyklus. A music analytical approach reveals the compositional strategies adopted by Mahnkopf in this work. Third, we examine the motivations behind Mahnkopf's specific choices: Why does Mahnkopf include references to certain composers such as Mark Andre and György Kurtág? And which underlying aesthetic, ideological or personal points of view guided the composer when establishing these specific connections? This paper presents a critical assessment of the interrelations between the two aspects of Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf's work: his theoretical writings and his musical compositions.

The opera Telemaco, with a libretto by Marco Coltellini and music by Christoph Gluck, occupies a unique position as an opera seria that negotiates both tradition and reform. Scholars have long criticized the opera because of its ill-shaped libretto and uneven musical setting. This article contributes to the ongoing debate about operatic reform by reevaluating Telemaco based on its literary sources—Homer’s Odyssey and Fénelon’s novel Télémaque (1699). The absorption of Homer and Fénelon into the fabric of Telemaco goes well beyond adaptation, touching both its general dramaturgy and the specific creation of its characters. Set on the island of Circe, Coltellini's libretto echoes the timeless, liminal status of the corresponding islands (Circe’s and Calypso’s) found in Homer and Fénelon. The characters reflect and blend features of their literary counterparts. They fall into two groups: those who fight their captive condition through impetuous behavior (Circe and Telemachus) and those who attempt to circumvent their predicament by clinging to a golden past (Asteria) or yearning for a hopeful future (Ulysses’s desire to return home). Gluck’s expression of the characters’ longing and identity, achieved through a manipulation of form and textual re-composition, thus implies multiple temporal directions, suggesting a series of synchronic, revolving points of view that challenge the diachronic unfolding of events typically associated with opera reform in the eighteenth century. This method of analysis therefore offers insight into the creative process and helps refine our understanding of reformist opera, both in Gluck’s output and broader eighteenth-century operatic practice.

Selections and reflections: the legacy of Sir Lawrence Bragg . Edited by John M. Thomas and Sir David Phillips. Northwood, Middlesex: Science Reviews Ltd, 1990. Pp. 308, £27.00. ISBN 0-905927-43-5 The year 1990 was the centenary of the birth of Sir Lawrence Bragg (WLB) and there are many people around, some advanced in years but many younger and still at the height of their powers, who were influenced in their work and lives by this great scientist. A selection of writers, mostly distinguished scientists who interacted with Bragg in some way - including ten Nobel laureates - have together provided a three-dimensional verbal portrait of Sir Lawrence Bragg, seeing different aspects of him from different points of view.

Introduction. The main directions of development the theory and methods of management of educational and training process and competitive activity include the optimal selection of the educational and training content at different stages of long-term training. Purpose: to determine the dynamics of special physical fitness athletes aged 15-16 years in pankration at the stage of specialized basic training in the annual cycle under the influence of experimental and traditional programs. Methods: theoretical analysis and generalization of literary sources, analysis of documentary materials, pedagogical testing, pedagogical experiment, methods of mathematical statistics. During November 2018 - October 2019, a formative pedagogical experiment was organized and conducted, involving control (21 athletes) and experimental (22 athletes) groups. Results. Most of the relative indicators ("climbing a rope 5 m without the help of legs", "Burpee test in 30 s", "squats with a disc from a barbell 20 kg in 1 min.", "rotation with a disc from a barbell 20 kg in 1 min."," pull of amortization rubber in 60 s") ranged from 12.05 to 18.35% improvement over the entire (annual period) of the pedagogical experiment implementation. According to one of the special physical fitness indicators (control exercise "simulation of passages in the legs with pulling a partner in 60 s (with amortization rubber)") the values of improvement were more significant and amounted 43.28%. In the control group, based on the results of the whole pedagogical experiment, there are significant increases in most indicators of special physical fitness. Significant (p≤0.01) increments of results are observed for most indicators. Relative indicators of improvement of results ("climbing on a rope of 5 m without the help of legs", "Burpy test in 30 s", " rotation with a disk from a barbell of 20 kg in 1 min.", " pull of amortization rubber in 60 s") ranged from 5.05–17.70% during the implementation of the pedagogical experiment. However, according to one of the special physical fitness indicators (control exercise "Squats with a disc from a barbell 20 kg in 1 min.") the values of improvement did not acquire significant values and amounted 5.07% (p = 0.07). Conclusions. According to the results of pedagogical experiment, we observe a significant improvement in most special physical fitness indicators, the situation is fairly uniform. Significant (p≤0.01) increases in the results of control exercises are observed for all indicators. Key words: preparedness, stage, indicators, results, mixed combat sports.

There are so many things made of concrete, glass and metal in modern cities. All of this displace nature and there is no space for planting. Plants produce oxygen and clean the environment. That is why the landscaping of the roofs of buildings is a kind of compensation in landscaping. The article is about studying methods of creating extensive green roofs from the origin to nowadays. The work includes the study of historical, architectural and regulatory documents and some literary sources. It also includes some facts from the history of green roofs creation, which appeared in the 9th century, on the example of the old house of the Vikings, who lived on the territory of the Faroe Islands. There is a comparative analysis of historical and modern technologies in the article. The design features of extensive roof landscaping are considered. The study revealed modern techniques of extensive landscaping, as well as a list of plants that are resistant to roof landscaping. Recommendations for the usage of waterproof materials like bitumen roll and other are given. The modern approach to the selection of substrates for growing plants on extensive green roofs is also considered. The study revealed modern techniques of extensive landscaping, as well as a list of plants that are resistant to roofing landscaping. It has been revealed that modern materials significantly reduce the specific weight of the construction and ensure the excellent efficiency of the system and the viability of plants during the all working lifespan of the roof. They are discussed the technology of growing planting material for roof landscaping like moss or sedum mats, growing plants in pallets and multiboards, etc.

The article provides a comparable analysis of phraseologisms with the zoonymic component in German and Ukrainian linguistic images of the world, which are closely related to national cultures, traditions, customs and religions. Representatives of the animal world become symbols of prototype imagery of strength, bravery, courage, loyalty, stubbornness, humility, guile, speed of movement, wisdom. It has been identified that zoonymic component in a phraseological unit has a pronounced national-cultural specificity, which determines its associative relations and allows to use these phraseologisms to characterize appearance, social status, interpersonal relationships, behavior, physical and emotional state, intelligence, attitude to work and character traits of a person. In this case, the negative characteristics in zoonyms outweigh the positive ones, which is explained by the fact that any language tends to more likely adopt negative deviation in meaning. Mythology, folklore, biblical and literary sources, historical events and facts have significant bearing on the choice of zoonyms in phraseological units of the languages compared. Names of animals in different languages can be related to not the same images and symbols, and the same animals can be a standard for ascribing different qualities and characteristics. Thus, phraseological units with zoonyms can cause difficulties in translation, since zoonimic image plays a crucial role in the formation of the individual meaning of the phraseological unit, performing both informative and imaginative-expressive function. Phraseological units with a zoonymic component can be translated using full equivalents, partial lexical and grammatical equivalents, selection of analogues, description, literal and overtonal translations.
