Comics and cartoons are valued in twenty-first century popular culture and are increasingly used as ‘Applied Comics’ to help communicate key messages and information in society. However, there is less evidence of cartoons and comics being used to communicate with and engage library users in learning, information literacy (IL) and research support. This paper explores case studies of how several different projects have utilised comics as a medium to deliver key messages about library services to support teaching and research at Cambridge University Libraries. The paper examines the use of comics and cartoons in a library context framed in a theory of comics and visual learning. The reception and output of the comics and cartoons with different audiences at Cambridge University Libraries is explored and the paper proposes that further research could be done to examine the potential of comics in communication and IL.

AbstractThis paper, which is largely based on the findings of my doctoral study, investigated the contribution of effective library and information services to academic achievements at universities in Ghana. The main objective of this study was to assess and explore the effectiveness of library and information services and establish its contribution to efficient academic work. The researchers adopted a mixed methods approach in which both qualitative and quantitative research approaches are used in a single study. This study used a survey research design because of the large and wide-spread population involved. The results of the study established that there is a correlation between effective library and information services and academic achievements at the universities in Ghana. The study also establish that library users were generally satisfied with the services provided by the university libraries and the provision of study space, book lending and Internet services turn out to be the most effective and highly patronized services. The findings on the challenges facing the delivery of effective library and information services clearly indicate that inadequate staff training programmes were affecting the ability of library staff to deliver effective library services. Finally, this paper has made recommendations on how to improve upon the effectiveness of library and information services to enhance academic work at universities in Ghana.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a documentary search about factors that motivate the use of university library. Literature about these factors was not found, either not standards or indicators used to measure those factors’ impact. On the other side, evidence was found about the decrease in library attendance, reported by the university libraries themselves; however, no evidence about the causes of this phenomenon was found. In sucha context, this article presents a research project that will be applied in 3 universities at Northeast Mexico, in which a methodology to identify and analyze motivation in students to use the university library is proposed.Keywords: academic library, library use studies, library users, motivation, library services, user satisfactionResumen: En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de la revisión documental sobre el tema de los factores que motivan el uso de la biblioteca universitaria. No se encontró literatura sobre estos factores y tampoco se encontraron normas o indicadores de referencia que permitan medir su impacto. Por otro lado, se encontró evidencia de un descenso en la asistencia reportada por las bibliotecas de las instituciones de educación superior, pero no se encontró evidencia de sus causas. Information Literacy now-a -days plays a very important role in everyday life because it involves a combination of education, job related task social involvements and social cultural practice. Information literacy is important for individuals to reach their desired goal in any field. The present study has been undertaken with a view to promote information literacy among Special library users with Special reference to the Silchar Medical College, Silchar, Assam. The present work was carried out during March 2018 to July 2018. For that purpose, survey method has been adopted, which comprises of questionnaire, for knowing the opinion of the respondents in respect of Promoting Information literacy among the library users. The study result reveals that a few students were aware about the different sources of information and also the different search techniques. The study also reveals that the promotion of information literacy is required in many areas such as Library OPAC, Classification and cataloguing etc.

This article considers institutional literacy as a lens through which to consider causes of library anxiety and the development of library programs. Institutional literacy is the ability to read and engage with the ways of being and doing that are -- often invisibly -- embedded into institutions of all kinds. This article posits that the ability of library users to confidently engage with library services is in part predicated on the level of institutional literacy these users have, both in the institution of the library itself and any larger host institution – such as a university. A setting such as a university requires a range of literacies, and those developing programs and services in such settings should not assume new and potential library users already have developed these literacies. While librarians are accustomed to considering information literacy as their contribution to this matrix, unfamiliar institutional literacy practices can present obstacles to new library users becoming information literate. A comparison of research on the effects of a lack of institutional literacy and research into library anxiety demonstrates parallels that suggest that low levels of institutional literacy are a contributing factor to library anxiety, creating one of the aforementioned obstacles. Acting as institutional literacy mediators is one way library workers can respond to this challenge. The article concludes with a description of how the theoretical lens thus developed was used to inform the development of a personal librarian program at the University of Regina, in part by positioning librarians as institutional literacy mediators.

The usage of web 2.0 has become popular among young people in Indonesia. One of the purpose of using web 2.0 is for promotion in some university libraries. The emerging of the web 2.0 as promotional media is corelating with the development of digital library. The paper aims are (1) to describe the usage of web 2.0 for academic libraries promotion. (2) to describe the information / content of those web 2.0. (3) to describe the promotion activity through web 2.0. This research population is all university libraries in Indonesia, but only 40 university librraries that conduct promotion through web 2.0. The website observation is done between May-July 2013. The research results are (1) the university libraries in Indonesia are use facebook, twitter, and flikr to promote library programs and interaction with users. The web 2.0 consist of information about new book release, user education, general information about library services, and information literacy. (3) some of univerity libraries taking seriously and actively promote their library services, but some of them are don’t use the web 2.0.

This exploratory study examined the use of the Oregon State University Libraries website via mobile devices by advanced researchers at an off-campus branch location. Branch campus–affiliated faculty, staff, and graduate students were invited to participate in a survey to determine what their research behaviors are via mobile devices, including frequency of their mobile library website use and the tasks they were attempting to complete. Findings showed that while these advanced researchers do periodically use the library website via mobile devices, mobile devices are not the primary mode of searching for articles and books or for reading scholarly sources. Mobile devices are most frequently used for viewing the library website when these advanced researchers are at home or in transit. Results of this survey will be used to address knowledge gaps around library resources and research tools and to generate more ways to study advanced researchers’ use of library services via mobile devices.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the evolving ways library users engaged with services and resources and how library services adapted to meet their needs, in order to improve practice post-pandemic.Design/methodology/approachDuring Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, nine studies were conducted which examined the usage of space, services and resources; and employee and student perspectives. Findings from these studies were synthesized for this investigation through a process of qualitative meta-synthesis.FindingsThe themes from this meta-synthesis point to an ongoing need for streamlining services and processes, to improve efficiency as well as enable the Libraries to be prepared for the next crisis.Originality/valueWhile change takes time for large organizations, the existence of system-wide processes and services enabled library employees to continue assisting users across all Penn State campuses, demonstrating that the University Libraries could be considered a model for the “One Penn State” vision that the university strives to achieve by 2025.

Introduction. The academic library in the Pancoran area have user-oriented reference services by creating services called Personal Assistant Library Service (PALS). This paper discusses the reference services at Pancoran University which aims to describe the implementation of PALS at Universitas Pancoran as an effort to improve the academic library. Method. The method uses case study with qualitative approach. Techniques of collecting data through interviews conducted on librarians who work in the library. Results and Discussions. The findings of the strategy undertaken in an effort to improve reference services at the Pancoran University library can be done in a personal way by forming PALS services. In the case of Pancoran University, these efforts are reflected in the collection support provided for new services, reassessing the competencies needed for services and seeing the challenges that exist in its implementation. Conclusion. The improvement of college library services through PALS is an alternative that can be used by other university libraries even though the application at Pancoran University has not been maximized. PALS focuses on the needs of college library users with high ability needs and different subjects with personal handling.

<p>Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic caused university libraries to adopt policies restricting small and large-scale activities, including UPT UMM Library. The outbreak required UPT UMM Library to change the routine of library services in normal time by adjusting library services during the pandemic. Therefore, it requires a strategic library promotion. Methodology: The study employed descriptive method with qualitative approach. Data analysis techniques used Cresswell's descriptive qualitative analysis model. Results: The result showed that promotional strategy conducted UMM Library during the Covid-19 pandemic are to create library programs consisting of user education, information literacy classes, seminars and book reviews. In addition, in collaboration with FPPTI of East Java and also FPPTMA, UMM Library created "myUMM Library" which communicates and serves library users though social medias. Conclusion: As a result, the impact generated by the library promotion strategy during the pandemic has significant increase in digital visits and digital access.</p>
