Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was chemically modified with grafting maleic anhydride (MAH) monomer on its backbone by melting blending. Nano-particles SiO2 was modified by cationic surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) and added to PE coating respectively. Measurement of membrane potential showed that the coating containing modified SiO2 nano-particles had characteristic of ion selectivity. The properties of the different coatings were investigated according to relative industrial standards. Experimental results indicated that PE coating with ion selectivity had better performances, such as adhesion strength, cathodic disbonding and anti-corrosion, than those of coating without ion selectivity. Crystal structure of the coatings before and after alkali corrosion was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Structure of the coating without ion selectivity was damaged by NaOH alkali solution, causing mechanical properties being decreased. And the structure of the ion selective coatings was not affected.

The hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) nano-particles were prepared in mixture of 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM+BF4-) ionic liquid and water by a sol-gel method. The structure and morphology of obtained materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The influence of the amount of BMIM+BF4-was investigated. It was shown that the synthesized materials have discrete and uniform spherical morphology with the size in the range of 68-177 nm (obtained from DLS measurements), and the particle size of HMS can be controlled by varying the amount of BMIM+BF4-.

AbstractThis study addresses issues with currently used bone adhesives, by producing novel glass based skeletal adhesives through modification of the base glass composition to include copper (Cu) and by characterizing each glass with respect to structural changes. Bioactive glasses have found applications in fields such as orthopedics and dentistry, where they have been utilized for the restoration of bone and teeth. The present work outlines the formation of flexible organic-inorganic polyacrylic acid (PAA) – glass hybrids, commercial forms are known as glass ionomer cements (GICs). Initial stages of this research will involve characterization of the Cu-glasses, significant to evaluate the properties of the resulting adhesives. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of annealed Cu glasses indicates the presence of partial crystallization in the glass. The structural analysis of the glass using Raman suggests the formation of CuO nanocrystals on the surface. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further confirmed the formation of crystalline CuO phases on the surface of the annealed Cu-glass. The setting reaction was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The mechanical properties of the Cu containing adhesives exhibited gel viscoelastic behavior and enhanced mechanical properties when compared to the control composition. Compression data indicated the Cu glass adhesives were efficient at energy dissipation due to the reversible interactions between CuO nano particles and PAA polymer chains.

Recently, transition metal (TM) and rare earth ion doped II–VI semiconductor nanoparticles have received much attention because such doping can modify and improve optical properties of II–VI semiconductor nanoparticles by large amount. In this study, undoped, La doped and La+Ag co-doped ZnO nano particles have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel method using the mixture of Zinc acetate dihydrate and ethanol solution. The powders were calcinated at 600 °C for 2 h. The effect of lanthanum and lanthanum-silver incorporation on the structure, morphology, optical and electrical conductivity were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Absorption (EDAX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV and Photo Luminescence (PL) Characterization. The average particle size of the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles is calculated using the Scherrer formula and is found to be of less than 20 nm. Luminescences properties were found to be enhanced for the La and La+Ag co-doped ZnO nanoparticles.

In this paper, Cu-Ce/TiO2nano-particles, whose molar ratio account for 2%,2.5%,3%,3.5% and 4% respectively, were synthesized by sol-gel method, using Ti(C4H9O)4as the raw material, And the photocatalytic activities of the prepared samples were investigated by degrading formaldehyde gas under pure visible light through simulating indoor environment in the environmental test chamber. Moreover, X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer were applied to analyze the crystallite size and optical properties of the samples. It is indicated that the sample of 2.5% performs best in the test. Besides, photocatalytic mechanism of co-doping of Cu-Ce was discussed.
