[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] This dissertation examines education as an apparatus of state in three different research studies. The first paper, “Cultural Bombs and Dangerous Classes: Social Studies Education as State Apparatus in the War on Terror,” interrogates the tactical use of education within the War on Terror. Using sixteen years of annual reports from the Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism, this study 1) historicizes the growth of social studies education in counterterrorism policies; 2) illustrates how nonelite youths in the Muslim world are depicted as a threat requiring mitigation through education initiatives; and 3) applies Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Franz Fanon, and Amilcar Cabral’s observations of class, culture, and imperialism as analytical tools through which we can consider these reports. The second paper, “It Changes Me from Nothing to Something: Identifying Educative-Psychic Violence in a Counterterrorism Program for Nonelite Youths,” identifies educative-psychic violence in submissions to a U.S. public diplomacy initiative’s page on Facebook. It examines how teachers and staff interpret and communicate compliance with the program’s mission for students to develop an “appreciation for U.S. culture and democratic values through cultural enhancement activities” and addresses implications for education as public diplomacy. The third paper, “Teaching for Critically Engaged Denizenship: Lessons from Morocco on Naïve Notions of Citizenship and an Empowered Other Civic Status,” argues that in social studies education we too often use citizen and citizenship as inaccurate proxies for denizen and denizenship. Using ethnographic data from Morocco, it identifies distinctions in civic status and why they matter in civic education.

Civic engagement is increasingly recognized as a significant function of public universities. The university provides a variety of opportunities for civic engagement, including co-curricular activities, service learning opportunities, and specific majors and minors. This article reviews the attempt to embed civic engagement and civic education about the national debt and budget deficit issues in a university core curriculum course at Stephen F. Austin State University. We focus on specific issues of curriculum instruction and assessment of student learning of knowledge regarding the debt and deficit issues.

Abstract The idea of elaborating this article came to me after reading over and over again the content of Art.2 paragraph (1) of the National Education Law no.1 / 2011, with subsequent amendments and completions, a very important normative act for the present, but especially for the future of Romania, according to which „The law aims to promote an education oriented on values, creativity, cognitive abilities, volitional abilities and action capacities, fundamental knowledge and competencies/skills and abilities of direct utility, in the professional life and in the society. Anyone who reads the content of Art.2 paragraph (1) is entitled to believe that the most efficient secondary and higher education in the world is taking place in Romania. Unfortunately, when reading and analyzing the content of Art.3, it can be seen quite easily that the principles governing secondary and higher education, as well as lifelong learning in Romania have a more declarative character, i.e. there is one thing written on paper and something else is happening in reality. I would like to continue to talk about this, with arguments, supported by my knowledge and experience in the field of education, starting with September 1979, when I first entered a classroom consisting of military students, from the highly flattering position of instructor and educator and until now, after a lifetime of working in classrooms, laboratories, amphitheatres and auditoriums of several military and civilian higher education institutions, in the honorary position of university professor doctor habilitat and chairman of the University Ethics Commission.

Schools of social work have put considerable energy into civic engagement and community partnership. Despite the attention paid to the civic mission of the university and/or of the profession, however, very little attention has been paid to the civic education of social work students. It will be argued here that social work education must include discussions about citizenship and democracy, about participating in our communities apart from our work. Service learning, with its emphasis on civic learning and a complementary focus on social justice, provides both a lens and a pedagogy for accomplishing this.
