The introduction of digital terrestrial television and the passage of the Audiovisual Communications Services Act in Argentina in 2009 led to a series of competitions to stimulate the production of new content and help dismantle the prevailing center-periphery logic in Argentine television. An examination from the perspective of the political economy of communications of these efforts in 2011–2013 indicates that they were small steps in the right direction. Further progress will require a stable source of funding, a stronger role for public televisión, and new strategies for capturing viewers.

The dominant ideas in development economics have changed considerably over the four decades of its existence. Similarly, the influence of theory on policymaking has also changed, not only with new ideas, but more importantly, with the ideological preferences of those with power and influence, especially at the international level. During the eighties, development economics-which has emphasised market failures and other welfare reasons for judicious state intervention to ensure greater equity and efficiency-was under siege from the intellectual assault of market neo-conservatives in control of the major international economic institutions such· as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and supported by the dominant ideologies of Thatcherism and Reaganomics at the global level. Political economy, rejected in the seventies as an unsophisticated nineteenth century approach appropriated by the political Left, re-emerged in the hands of the Right as the main weapon in this assault. The collapse of the Soviet Union and allied East European regimes and the marketisation of the remaining economies still claiming to be in the socialist camp only seemed to prove the worst claims of the generally politically conservative economic liberals of the late twentieth century.

Colonialism cannot be forgotten in Africa because of the disorientation and dissonance it enforced. This scenario paved way  for unbridled expropriation  of human and material resources. But, by the beginning of the 1940s African  nationalists  rejected the colonial political economy, and  demanded for self governance.  The aftermath of their demand engendered a wind of change which swept most African states to statehood in the 1960s. Regrettably, five decades after independence, the continent is still experiencing a free fall  in all human development sectors. Those who inherited political power, rather than ensuring inclusive governance have imposed pain and terror on their people . With an analytical , method the paper argues that politics is squarely responsible for the leadership fatigue in the continent. It concludes that for Africa to have the right leaders they desire, the political institutions must guarantee popular participation.

With reference to an Okinawan new religion called Ijun and its branch on the island of Hawaii, this article analyzes the international expansion of new religious organizations from the perspective of political economy. I develop questions concerning the flow of capital and the relationship between central church and branch by the application of a center-periphery model. I argue that the development of an international organization allows the Okinawan group to become a center with respect to its overseas branches, replicating the centern

Then we put thee on the right way, So follow thou that; And follownot the desires of those who know not. (Qur'an 45: 18)IntroductionWestern perceptions of Islam have always been colored by their fearof Islamic expansion and the historical rationality of the Crusades. Thecurrent preoccupation with the "clash of civilizations" debate and theextraordinary focus on "Islamic fundamentalism" have greatly politicizedthe discourse on Islam while preventing a fuller understanding of Islam. The tendency among Muslim scholars to allow the West to set the agendaof what should be studied in and about Islam has led to the delay of ijtihadin more important areas, such as Islamic political economy. In the age ofmodernization, thinkers in the West have rejected Islam as backward lookingand as an impediment to economic development. A fair interpretationof Islam, however, includes a complete understanding of the need fordevelopment and social welfare. The political economy of Islam, as thispaper will present, is a completely humanistic and internally consistentdevelopment and welfare-oriented paradigm. In the twentieth century, Islam has survived colonial domination, communist repression, and the rapid spread of liberalism. Today it has arapidly increasing membership of over one billion and is experiencing aresurgence from Malaysia to Sudan and Algeria and from Iran to thenewly independent republics of Central Asia. More and more nations withpredominantly Muslim populations are undergoing a burgeoning sense ofIslamic consciousness. To some, this is a cohesive global phenomenonwith potentially indelible consequences. They see it as a radical movementthat is antithetical to Western liberal values and a challenge to theirreligious zeal to universalize these values. Regardless of the political constructionsof Islam's revival, what is of the essence is that more and more ...

New Left regimes have been underpinned by a reliance both on labor and nontraditional social groups and on capital interests related to the primary commodity sector, and the state has played an important overseer role in these relationships. These states have attempted to accommodate all these groups by pursuing incompatible populist and pragmatic policies. Study of the particular configuration of these regimes is important because they have become simultaneously more inclusive and closed off, generating heightened social fragmentation. Divisions among the left, the hardening of the right, and economic frailty render these governments unstable.
