School-related wellbeing, academic buoyancy, and adaptability are valued constructs in their own right, as indicators of student welfare and as predictors of academic achievement. In the present study, we examined the impact of a six-session multi-component, intervention on school-related wellbeing, academic buoyancy, and adaptability. Participants in their first year of upper secondary education were randomly allocated to early intervention groups, or wait list-control groups. Following baseline measurements, outcomes were assessed after the early intervention groups and again after the wait list-control groups. Following intervention, a slowed decline was shown in school-related wellbeing and adaptability was boosted. Buoyancy was boosted in the early intervention group but not the late intervention group. Findings show how a relatively short intervention can beneficially impact on student outcomes. Booster sessions may be required to maintain the benefits for wellbeing and adaptability.

Abstract Introduction Untreated polycythemia leads to complications including thrombosis. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is commonly associated with secondary erythrocytosis, which testosterone therapy can perpetuate. Effects of positive airway pressure (PAP) on elevated hematocrit (HCT) is unknown. We hypothesize PAP adherence can reduce HCT in men with OSA and polycythemia. Methods Retrospective chart review of male outpatients with newly diagnosed OSA and HCT≥45% at or 3 months before polysomnography (PSG) was conducted. Intervention group consisted of patients initiating PAP for OSA. HCT within 6 months of PAP initiation and PSG were recorded for intervention and control groups, respectively. Primary endpoint was time-to-HCT reduction of HCT<50% plus 3% decrease. Cox proportional-hazards analysis was used to assess time-to-HCT response. Demographics, smoking history, testosterone administration, STOP-Bang score, AHI, and PAP compliance data were obtained. Patients excluded if PAP not indicated, or if PSG, PAP compliance, or repeat HCT were unavailable. Results 41 men with OSA had HCT≥45%, of which 16 had HCT≥50%. Median age was 60 years and median BMI was 32 kg/m2. 28 started PAP. 21 met definition for PAP compliance within 6 months. Median AHI of intervention and control groups were 23 and 19 events/hr, respectively. Mean baseline HCT of both groups were 49 and 50, respectively. No significant difference in age, BMI, smoking history, testosterone therapy, and baseline HCT between both groups noted. 39% of intervention group exhibited HCT response at 1 or more longitudinal assessments, versus 38% of control. Intervention group had higher mean STOP-Bang than control (mean 5.9 vs. 4.6, p=0.01) and trended towards higher mean baseline AHI (27.4 vs. 19.0, p= 0.06). Time-to-event analysis controlling for STOP-Bang and AHI demonstrated PAP was not associated with time-to-HCT response (HR = 1.3, 95% CI = 0.4–4.4). In moderate-severe OSA patients, 40% of intervention group had HCT response compared to 14% of control, though difference was not significant (HR = 2.5, 95% CI = 0.3–20.0). Conclusion Moderate-severe OSA patients trended towards reduction in HCT with PAP, although not statistically significant. Testosterone administration did not affect HCT response to PAP in this cohort. Larger studies are required to determine HCT response to PAP in these patients. Support (if any):

Pediatric clinical trials allow for the testing of appropriate and effective treatments for children. However, some challenges exist with recruitment. This study examined the effectiveness of DigiKnowIt News, an interactive, multimedia website (which includes activities, videos, and comic books) designed to educate children about clinical trials. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2018 with 91 participants ( M age = 10.92 years; SD = 2.06). Participants were randomly assigned to intervention or wait-list control groups and completed questionnaires at pretest and posttest (1 week later) about their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs about clinical trials, and self-efficacy for participating in clinical trials. Participants in the intervention group received access to DigiKnowIt News between pretest and posttest and completed a satisfaction questionnaire at posttest. At the end of the study, participants in the wait-list control group were offered the option to use the website and complete a satisfaction questionnaire. At posttest, participants in the intervention group, compared to participants in the wait-list control group, had more knowledge about clinical trials and more reported confidence for participating in clinical trials. Participants reported high levels of satisfaction with DigiKnowIt News. The findings suggest that an educational website can improve factors related to increasing rates of participation in clinical trials.

Abstract This paper first introduces and reviews the existing research on the well-known “students–professors (S/P) problem”, which was first formulated in 1979. Next, it presents an empirical study of Danish upper secondary students’ answers to two mathematical modeling versions of the S/P-problem; a mathematization version (296 students), and a de-mathematization version (658 students). Besides reproducing several previously reported findings, e.g., the so-called reversal error, the study identifies new error types not previously reported in the literature. The mathematical modeling perspective adopted, along with a mixed-methods design, give rise to new potential explanations of the reversal error as well as explanations of the new error types. Our study shows that interpreting the linguistic formulation of the S/P-problem statement is not only related to language but is intrinsically of a mathematical – and cognitive – nature as well. With large disparities in enrollment and completion rates, girls’ education is a topic of concern in Turkey. Private funding campaigns have played an important role in combating gender inequality in education. This paper examines the impact of two major private funding campaigns on girls’ schooling rates using Turkish provincial level data for 2013 and 2014. Controlling for regional and socio-demographic characteristics our findings show that “Dad, Send Me to School” and “Snowdrops” campaigns have positively influenced girls’ schooling rates in primary and lower secondary education across Turkish provinces. The effect is less conclusive for upper secondary education.

Background: The current study examined whether yoga would increase levels of mindfulness in a healthy population. Method: Forty-six participants were randomly assigned to an 8-week yoga intervention group or a wait-list control group. Mindfulness was assessed pre and post yoga, using the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI). Results: Results indicate that the yoga group experienced a significant increase in Overall mindfulness, and in three mindfulness subscales; Attention to the present moment, Accepting and open attitudes toward experience, and Insightful understanding (p < .01). The control group experienced a significant increase in overall mindfulness (p < .02) and insightful understanding (p < .01). Findings suggest that a yoga intervention may be a viable method for increasing levels of trait mindfulness in a healthy population, potentially implicating yoga as a preventive method for the later development of negative emotional mood states (i.e. anxiety and depression). The control group also experienced moderate elevations of mindfulness at the second assessment.

Abstract Study Objectives We sought to examine the impact of digital cognitive behavioral therapy (dCBT) for insomnia on both self-reported cognitive impairment and objective cognitive performance. Methods The Defining the Impact of Sleep improvement on Cognitive Outcomes (DISCO) trial was an online, two-arm, single-blind, randomized clinical trial of dCBT versus wait-list control. Participants were aged 25 years and older, met DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder, and reported difficulties with concentration or memory. Assessments were carried out online at baseline, and 10 and 24 weeks post-randomization. The primary outcome measure was self-reported cognitive impairment, assessed with the British Columbia Cognitive Complaints Inventory (BC-CCI). Secondary outcomes included tests of cognitive performance, insomnia symptoms, cognitive failures, fatigue, sleepiness, depression, and anxiety. Results Four hundred and ten participants with insomnia were recruited and assigned to dCBT (N = 205) or wait-list control (N = 205). At 10 weeks post-randomization the estimated adjusted mean difference for the BC-CCI was −3.03 (95% CI: −3.60, −2.47; p &lt; 0.0001, d = −0.86), indicating that participants in the dCBT group reported less cognitive impairment than the control group. These effects were maintained at 24 weeks (d = −0.96) and were mediated, in part, via reductions in insomnia severity and increased sleep efficiency. Treatment effects in favor of dCBT, at both 10 and 24 weeks, were found for insomnia severity, sleep efficiency, cognitive failures, fatigue, sleepiness, depression, and anxiety. We found no between-group differences in objective tests of cognitive performance. Conclusions Our study shows that dCBT robustly decreases self-reported cognitive impairment at post-treatment and these effects are maintained at 6 months.

This study investigates the impact of an online transition curriculum embedded with literacy strategies on reading outcomes for secondary students in grades 9–12 across two states. The quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design had a sample of 338 students with and without disabilities and utilized the AIMS Web Maze Test for 8th Grade Reading Prompts to measure gain scores in reading comprehension. Multilevel linear modeling methods were used to examine the effects of the curriculum intervention on students nested within teachers. Findings show that while both groups increased in reading, the intervention group made larger gains that were statistically significant and corresponded to a large effect size. These results emphasize the importance of embedding reading comprehension strategies within transition services.

La aplicación de proyectos formativos como estrategia didáctica desde el enfoque socioformativo, constituyen un aporte a la sociedad del conocimiento para que los estudiantes desarrollen su talento considerando los cambios actuales de la educación media superior. El propósito de este trabajo es describir la aplicación de los proyectos formativos en estudiantes de sexto semestre en el Instituto Politécnico Nacional, así como analizar el impacto que tiene la realización de los proyectos socioformativos. Se aplicó la observación de los estudiantes en ambientes de aprendizaje fuera del aula; los procesos reflexivos involucraron el análisis de la planeación, implementación y evaluación de la estrategia. Los resultados dieron muestra sobre la formación mediante proyectos socioformativos provocando que se lleve a cabo una comprensión, análisis, interpretación y resolución de problemas vinculando diferentes conceptos y áreas de conocimiento para lograr un aprendizaje significativo. Como conclusión se tiene que, la realización de los proyectos socioformativos, mejoran el talento humano y afrontan los retos de la sociedad del conocimiento mediante el abordaje de problemas reales y la colaboración. The application of training projects as a didactic strategy from the socioformative approach constitutes a contribution to the knowledge society for students to develop their talent considering the current changes in upper secondary education. The purpose of this work is to describe the application of training projects in sixth-semester students at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, as well as to analyze the impact that the realization of socio-educational projects has. Student observation was applied in learning environments outside the classroom; The reflective processes involved the analysis of the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the strategy. The results showed the formation through socio-formative projects causing an understanding, analysis, interpretation, and resolution of problems to be carried out linking different concepts and areas of knowledge to achieve meaningful learning. In a conclusion, it is necessary to carry out socio-educational projects, improve human talent and face the challenges of the knowledge society by addressing real problems and collaboration.
