Currently in the cleanroom-related industries, both the air quality of indoors intake and outdoors emission should be controlled at a certain level. Wet scrubbers and air washers are the main facilities to clean up air for the process required. However, previous studies have found that these devices typically have lower removal efficiency for low inlet concentration contaminations; little information is available to explain the efficiency deterioration and only on the empirical basis. A theoretical model is proposed, which applies Fick’s second law to derive a rapid efficiency simulating formula. This model is different from the empirical equations of former studies, and is able to describe the relationship between the inlet concentration and removal efficiency of the air washing facilities. Moreover, the calculation time of the nonlinear recurrence equation is effectively lessened by the Euler equation and proven to be practical and concise for the rapid efficiency determination. Confirmation of the simulation formula was conducted by using the experimental data from the previous studies of the wet scrubber and in situ historical record of a make-up air unit. In this article, we describe how an outlet concentration and removal efficiency can be predicted using a generic simulating formula, leading to better design with less effort. The proposed model and equation minimize the design complexity and help to optimize the sizing and operational control of the air washing facilities. This not only decreases the construction and operating costs, but also lead to better energy usage. Practical application: Engineers can use the output of this paper to optimize air washer facility designs instead of intuitively extending the rinsing duration or enlarging the scale of the equipment. The model can be applied to both residential and industrial air washers to predict the efficiency and evaluate the performance. It also allows the quantitative analysis and risk assessment of an abrupt air washer breakdown in the clean manufacturing industries.

AbstractA variety of dust control methods are often applied in coal mines, among which the application of wet scrubbers has proven to be an efficient technology for the removal of dust in airstreams, rather than diluting or confining the dust. In this paper, a wet scrubber design was developed. Based on a self-designed experimental test platform, the total dust concentration, respirable dust concentration, air volume, and average pressure drops of wet scrubbers with 12, 16, 20, and 24 blades were measured under different water intake conditions. The results show that the different water intake levels have only minimal effects on the air volume of the wet scrubbers. However, increased water intake had improved the dust removal efficiency of the wet scrubbers with the same number of blades. The wet scrubber with 16 blades was found to have the best dust removal efficiency at a water intake level of 1.35 m3/h. Its total dust and respirable dust removal efficiency reached 96.81% and 95.59%, respectively. The air volume was 200.4 m3/min, and the average pressure drop was determined to be 169.4 Pa. In addition, when the wet scrubber with 16 blades was applied in a coal preparation plant in China’s Shanxi Province, it was observed that the total dust concentration had fallen below 8.1 mg/m3, and the respirable dust concentration had fallen below 5.9 mg/m3. Therefore, the results obtained in this research investigation provide important references for the use of wet scrubbers to improve coal production environmental conditions.

The need is increasing in line with the high market demand for a product. One product that is widely used is paper. One of the recycled paper industries is PT. Pura Nusapersada Unit Paper Mill 7/8, where the production process uses water vapor from a coal-fired boiler. This process can produce ash that can pollute the air so that air pollutant control devices such as cyclones and wet scrubbers are needed. It is necessary to evaluate the efficiency of the cyclone and wet scrubber by knowing the specifications and working principles of the tool, the emissions produced, the effectiveness of the equipment, the factors that influence, problems, operation, and maintenance. The method used is direct observation, interviews, data in the form of documents, references, and routine reports. The cyclone used is a multi-cyclone type, and the wet scrubber is a venturi scrubber type. From the calculations that have been done, the efficiency of the Hitachi Boiler is 94.195%, and the Hamada II Boiler is 96.844%. The boiler produces emissions that meet quality standards for the Minister of Environment Regulation No. 07/2007. The efficiency calculation should be done once a year so that the quality of the equipment is monitored and does not pollute the surrounding air quality.

Introduction: Large-scale human-computer systems involving people of various skills and motivation into the information processing process are currently used in a wide spectrum of applications. An acute problem in such systems is assessing the expected quality of each contributor; for example, in order to penalize incompetent or inaccurate ones and to promote diligent ones.Purpose: To develop a method of assessing the expected contributor’s quality in community tagging systems. This method should only use generally unreliable and incomplete information provided by contributors (with ground truth tags unknown). Results:A mathematical model is proposed for community image tagging (including the model of a contributor), along with a method of assessing the expected contributor’s quality. The method is based on comparing tag sets provided by different contributors for the same images, being a modification of pairwise comparison method with preference relation replaced by a special domination characteristic. Expected contributors’ quality is evaluated as a positive eigenvector of a pairwise domination characteristic matrix. Community tagging simulation has confirmed that the proposed method allows you to adequately estimate the expected quality of community tagging system contributors (provided that the contributors' behavior fits the proposed model).Practical relevance: The obtained results can be used in the development of systems based on coordinated efforts of community (primarily, community tagging systems).

Radon is one of the contaminants that sometimes impair the water quality of wells, especially those drilled in bedrock. Domestic radon removal units based on aeration have been commercially available for more than ten years. In order to determine how effectively these units remove radon a new test protocol applying frequent sampling while letting 100 litres of water flow, was developed. This way, removal efficiencies can be more accurately calculated and possible malfunctions detected. Seven models of domestic aerators designed for removing radon from household water were tested. The aerators were based on diffused bubble aeration, spray aeration or jet aeration. The average removal efficiencies for 100 litres with a medium flow rate were 86–100% except for a unit that circulated the aerated water back to the well that had removal efficiency of 80% at the maximum. By conducting a questionnaire study usual problems related to the aeration units were localized and recommendations on maintenance and installation are given accordingly.

The background to and the rationale for the Guidelines for Municipal Type Wastewater Discharges in the Northwest Territories is discussed. Particu1ar attention is given to the development of Table 2.1, Effluent Quality of Municipal Wastewater Discharges, which was based upon expected lagoon performance. Also included is a discussion of the flow ratio and dilution ratio concepts. The viability of these concepts was assessed against the available data. It appears that the guidelines misjudged both the number of coliform bacteria in northern raw sewage and the removal efficiency for these organisms in lagoons. It appears unlikely that lagoons can consistently meet the guideline requirements. More information and research is necessary before a complete assessment can be performed.

The aim of this study is to develop a relocatable modelling system able to describe the microbial contamination that affects the quality of coastal bathing waters. Pollution events are mainly triggered by urban sewer outflows during massive rainy events, with relevant negative consequences on the marine environment and tourism and related activities of coastal towns. A finite element hydrodynamic model was applied to five study areas in the Adriatic Sea, which differ for urban, oceanographic and morphological conditions. With the help of transport-diffusion and microbial decay modules, the distribution of Escherichia coli was investigated during significant events. The numerical investigation was supported by detailed in situ observational datasets. The model results were evaluated against water level, sea temperature, salinity and E. coli concentrations acquired in situ, demonstrating the capacity of the modelling suite in simulating the circulation in the coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea, as well as several main transport and diffusion dynamics, such as riverine and polluted waters dispersion. Moreover, the results of the simulations were used to perform a comparative analysis among the different study sites, demonstrating that dilution and mixing, mostly induced by the tidal action, had a stronger effect on bacteria reduction with respect to microbial decay. Stratification and estuarine dynamics also play an important role in governing microbial concentration. The modelling suite can be used as a beach management tool for improving protection of public health, as required by the EU Bathing Water Directive.
