The complex movement of artificial joints is closely related to the wear mechanism of the prosthesis material, especially for the polymer prosthesis, which is sensitive to motion paths. In this paper, the “soft-soft” all-polymer of XLPE/PEEK are selected to study the influence of motion paths on the friction and wear performance. Based on the periodic characteristics of friction coefficient and wear morphology, this paper reveals the friction and wear mechanism of XLPE/peek under multi-directional motion path, and obtains the quantitative relationship between friction coefficient and the aspect ratios of “∞”-shape motion path, which is of great significance to reveal and analyze the wear mechanism of “soft” all-polymer under multi-directional motion path. The results show that the friction coefficient is affected by the motion paths and have periodicity. Morever, under the multi-directional motion paths, the wear of PEEK are mainly abrasive wear and adhesive wear due to the cross shear effect, while the wear of XLPE is mainly abrasive wear with plastic accumulation. In addition, the friction coefficient is greatly affected the aspect ratios Rs-l of “∞”-shape and loads. Meanwhile, the wear morphologies are greatly affected by the aspect ratios Rs-l of “∞”-shape, but less affected by loads.

Cobalt chromium molybdenum alloy and highly cross-linked polyethylene are selected as the counterpairs in this study to carry out friction and wear testing over different ellipse motion paths to explore the influence of ellipse motion path on friction and wear of prosthesis materials. Here, the analytical methods for the periodic friction coefficient and special point wear are proposed to investigate the relationship between motion paths and tribological properties. The damage mechanism model of high cross-linked polyethyleneunder ellipse motion paths was established, which revealed the connection among material composition, motion paths and friction and wear mechanism. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear morphology are directly affected by changes in motion paths. The friction coefficient decreases with increasing aspect ratios, and the wear profile depth increases with increasing aspect ratios. The spatially resolved friction coefficient curve distinctly exhibits periodic “W”-type variation in elliptical motion paths. The friction coefficient shows maximum values at the long-axis endpoints and minimum values at the short-axis endpoints. There are different wear morphologies in different characteristic areas over the elliptical wear paths. The wear profile depth and width at the long-axis endpoints are larger than those at the short-axis endpoints, and the wear morphology is also more serious.

SiCp/Al-Si composites with different CeO2 contents were prepared by a powder metallurgy method. The effect of CeO2 content on mechanical properties, friction and wear properties of the composites was studied. The results show that with the increase in CeO2 content from 0 to 1.8 wt%, the density, hardness, friction coefficient of the composites first increases and then decreases, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and wear rate of the composites first decreases and then increases. When the content of CeO2 was 0.6 wt%, the density and hardness of the composite reached the maximum value of 98.54% and 113.7 HBW, respectively, the CTE of the composite reached the minimum value of 11.1 × 10−6 K−1, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the composite reached the maximum value of 0.32 and the minimum value of 1.02 mg/m, respectively. CeO2 has little effect on the wear mechanism of composites, and the wear mechanism of composites with different CeO2 content is mainly abrasive wear under the load of 550 N. Compared with the content of CeO2, load has a great influence on the wear properties of the composites. The wear mechanism of the composites is mainly oxidation wear and abrasive wear under low load. With the increase in load, the wear degree of abrasive particles is aggravated, and adhesive wear occurs under higher load.

Polypropylene/organo-montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) composites were investigated by XRD. Friction and wear behaviors of this composites sliding against GCr15 stainless steel were examined on M-2000 text rig in a ring-on-block configuration. Worn surfaces of PP and its composites were analyzed by SEM. The result shows that PP macromolecule chains have intercalated into OMMT layers and form intercalated nanocomposites. With the increase of mass fraction of OMMT, both wear rate and friction coefficient of composites first decrease then rise. With the increase of load, from 150 N, 200 N to 250 N, wear rate of composites increases, while friction coefficient reduces. The wear mechanisms of composites are connected with the content of OMMT. Composites were dominated by adhesive wear, abrasive wear and adhesive wear accompanied by abrasive wear respectively with the increase of OMMT content.

The Ni modified layer was prepared on surface of the Ti6Al4V substrate by plasma surface alloying technique (PSAT). The cross-section micro structure, phase structure and microhardness of Ni modified layer were studied. The friction and wear behavior of the Ni modified layer and the Ti6Al4V substrate were analysed. The effects of displacement amplitude, frequency and fretting time on friction coefficient of the Ni modified layer were investigated. The results indicated that the wear rate was lower compared with that of the Ti6Al4V substrate. Friction coefficient of the Ni modified layer increased with the increase of frequency. But it was insensitive to the change of wear time and the displacement amplitude. The wear mechanism of the Ti6Al4V was adhesion and abrasion wear mechanism while the Ni modified layer showed slightly abrasion wear.

The morphology of eutectic and primary silicon phases was analyzed by OM and SEM. OM and SEM results show that pure Nd can significantly refine both eutectic and primary silicon of hypereutectic Al-20%Si alloy. Morphology of primary silicon is transformed from star-shaped and irregular morphology to fine polyhedral and grain size of primary silicon is refined from 80~120 μm to 20~50 μm. Friction and wear resistance tests show that friction coefficient of Al-20%Si alloy reduces after Nd modification. Wear resistance of Al-20%Si alloy after modification is significantly improved as compared to the initial sample. The dominant wear mechanism for 0.3% Nd modified alloy is abrasive wear, adhesive wear and oxidative wear mechanism, but wear mechanism for unmodified alloy is abrasive wear and adhesive wear mechanism.

This study aims to deeply understand the effect of contact stress and slip ratio on wear performances of bainitic rail steels. The results showed that the wear loss increased as the contact stress and slip ratio increased. Based on the surface damage morphology and microstructural analyses, it revealed that the rolling contact fatigue wear mechanism played a significant role under the low slip ratio, but the dominant wear mechanism transferred to the abrasive wear at the high slip ratio. Meanwhile, the bainitic steel specifically presented worse wear resistance under the abrasive wear mode. Compared with the influence of a slip ratio, the increase in contact stress led to severer plastic flows and contributed to the propagation of cracks. In addition, the contact stress and slip ratio had the opposite effect on the friction coefficient, that is, the friction coefficient of bainitic steels behaved the inverse proportion with the contact stress, but positive proportion with the slip ratio. At last, the increase in slip ratio had more significant effect on the reduction of retained austenite (RA) than the enlargement of contact stress due to the fact that the RA would probably be removed before the martensitic transformation occurred under the abrasive wear mechanism.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of round pits arrangement patterns on tribological properties of journal bearing. In this paper, the tribological behaviors of journal bearing with different arrangement patterns under lubrication condition were studied based on M-2000 friction and wear tester. Design/methodology/approach The friction and wear of journal bearing contact surface were simulated by ANSYS. The wear mechanism of bearing contact surfaces was investigated by the means of energy dispersive spectrum analysis on the surface morphology and friction and wear status of the journal bearing specimens by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). Besides, the wearing capacity of the textured bearing was predicted by using the GM (1,1) and Grey–Markov model. Findings As the loads increase, the friction coefficient of journal bearing specimens decrease first and then increase slowly. The higher rotation speed, the lower friction coefficient and the faster temperature build-up. The main friction method of the bearing sample is three-body friction. The existence of texture can effectively reduce friction and wear. In many arrangement patterns, the best is 4# bearing with round pits cross-arrangement pattern. Its texturing diameters are 60 µm and 125 µm, and the spacing and depth are 200 µm and 25 µm, respectively. In addition, the Grey–Markov model prediction result is more accurate and fit the experimental value better. Originality/value The friction and wear mechanism is helpful for scientific research and engineers to understand the tribological behaviors and engineering applications of textured bearing. The wear capacity of textured bearing is predicted by using the Grey–Markov model, which provides technical help and theoretical guidance for the service life and reliability of textured bearing.

Purpose The effect of the load on the tribological properties of Si3N4-hBN sliding against Si3N4 were investigated under dry and water lubrication condition. Design/methodology/approach Using a MMU-5G type pin-on-disc friction and wear tester. Findings Under the dry friction, the wear mechanism was dominated by ploughing and abrasive wear, and the contact status was elastic contact under the load less than 25 N. With the increase of the load, the friction coefficient decreased; the main wear mechanism was fatigue fracture, and the contact status turned into plastic contact. Under water lubrication, effective lubrication film could be produced on the worn surface, and it had a function of fluid lubrication under the load less than 15 N. With the increase of the load, the pin and the disc came into direct contact, and the friction and wear of the pairs were aggravated; the wear mechanism changed from chemical wear into abrasive wear and brittle spalling. Originality/value The study on the effect of the load on the tribological properties of Si3N4-hBN sliding against Si3N4 was investigated under dry and water lubrication condition in the way of contact stress.

This study deals with fretting wear behavior of 40CrNiMoA steel on a SRVⅣoscillating friction and wear tester. The results indicate that with the frequency and load increasing, both the friction coefficient and fretting wear volume increase. With the amplitude increasing, the fretting wear volume increased too, but the effect of amplitude on friction coefficient was not simple positive correlation according to the experimental results. Meanwhile, the fretting wear mechanism is directly related to test frequency, load and amplitude. When they are small, the main fretting wear mechanism is abrasive wear, with these test parameters increasing, the main fretting wear mechanism turns to a combination of abrasive wear and adhesion wear. Based on the experimental results, the anti-fretting wear measures of steel worm gear pairs used in mechanical tracked regulator of tracked vehicle are discussed.

This work is devoted to the study of the high temperature friction and wear behaviors of Cu-based friction pairs in wet clutches under different temperatures, rotation speeds, and loads. Pin-on-disc tests are carried out on the UMT-3. The friction coefficient, wear factor, and high temperature wear mechanism are primarily analyzed. The results show that as the temperature rises from 120°C to 420°C, the friction coefficient increases from 0.28 to 0.35 at first and then decreases to 0.30, when the vibration of friction coefficient is significantly identified. Meanwhile, the wear factor grows gradually from K=7.9×10-8 g/Nm to K=41.8×10-8 g/Nm at first and then grows sharply to K=112.2×10-8 g/Nm. The main wear mechanisms are abrasive wear and ploughing wear when the temperature is below 345°C, and the wear seriously deteriorates when the temperature exceeds 345°C, when the wear mechanism changes to adhesive wear and delamination wear.
