Assembly analysis is necessary for mechanical product to optimize design and improve the product quality since assembly deviation is the key factor affecting the assembly quality. In this paper, the rigid-compliant assembly of thin-walled aero-engine casing is studied to evaluate the assembly quality at the design stage. First, the Jacobian–Torsor model is proposed to construct multistage casing assembly owing to its effectiveness to express assembly deviation. The torsor expression is modified and expanded to present the rigid-compliant coupling tolerance. Then, the partial parallel chain is addressed via combination operation. By using extremum and statistical method, the tolerance zone and the distribution of the objective deviation are obtained. Furthermore, to study the effect of specified compliant deviation on statistical distribution, the bolt looseness and positional deformation are investigated to provide an effective means for geometric deviation and connecting joints of aero-engine casing components of precision assembly. The presented method can address compliant deformation tolerance and geometrical manufacturing tolerance together, and is reliable for casing assembly to predict assembly quality at the design stage. In addition, it also has a great significance to guide tolerance design and product optimization.

This paper aims to provide an assembly method to improve mechanical assembly quality. In order to improve the variation propagation control in rotationally symmetric cylindrical components assembly, the eccentric and tilt errors of a single rotor stage were taken into account using a connective assembly model and the eccentric deviation in a mechanical assembly was minimized by properly selecting component orientations. Compared to the minimum cumulative error, the maximum cumulative error was reduced by 71 percent, and the average cumulative error was reduced by 57 percent in the assembly of three components. This article provides an assembly method through variation propagation control in rotationally symmetric cylindrical components assembly. The method could be extended to rotationally symmetric cylindrical components assembly, for example in the assembly of aero-engine components.

Welding process of automobile panels is a key process in the manufacturing of automobile body and its quality directly impact on the appearance and quality of automobile. The causes of dimensional deviation of welded assembly could be workpieces variation, assembly tooling variation, and welding distortion. As a major source of assembly deviation, dimensional variations of workpieces have important effects on the assembly quality of automobile body. In this paper, pre-stressing was used to reflect the workpieces’ variation and the node coupling method was used in the numerical simulation to predict the deformation of assembly caused by the welding process of automobile panels. And further the computation results were listed and compared with the measured ones.

Supplier selection is one of the key decisions in supply chain management. Companies need not only to make the “make” or “buy” decisions but also differentiate across potential suppliers in order to improve operational performance. Product design is an engineering based activity that realizes the customer requirements into functions of a new product. Many studies have pointed out that the integration of product and supply chain is a key factor for profitability and efficiency. However, most studies address supply chain performance after freezing the design of the product; only a few studies discuss when and how to incorporate supply chain decisions during product design. This paper presents a graph theory based optimization methodology to tackle this problem. The supplier selection issue is considered by evaluating its impact on both internal (e.g., ease of assembly) and external (e.g., transportation time) enterprise performances, which are aggregated as supply chain performance at the conceptual design stage. A case study in the bicycle industry demonstrates the advantages of this methodology. The presented mathematical programming formulation enables simultaneous optimization of both product design and supply chain design during the early design stages.

The weight information of a floating offshore plant, such as an FPSO, is one of the important data to estimate the amount of production material and to determine the production method for its construction. In addition, the weight information is a key factor which affects in the building cost and production period of the offshore plant. Although the importance of the weight has long been recognized, the weight has been roughly estimated by using the existing design and production data, and designer’s experience. To improve this task, a simplified model for the weight estimation of the offshore plant using the statistical method was developed in this study. To do this, various past records to estimate the weight of the offshore plant were collected through the literature survey, and then the correlation analysis and the multiple regression analysis were performed to develop the simplified model for the weight estimation. Finally, to evaluate the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to some examples of the weight estimation of topsides of the offshore plant. The results showed that the developed model can be applied the weight estimation process of the offshore plant at the early design stage.

AbstractIn order to obtain better integrated performance of aero-engine during the conceptual design stage, multiple disciplines such as aerodynamics, structure, weight, and aircraft mission are required. Unfortunately, the couplings between these disciplines make it difficult to model or solve by conventional method. MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) methodology which can well deal with couplings of disciplines is considered to solve this coupled problem. Approximation method, optimization method, coordination method, and modeling method for MDO framework are deeply analyzed. For obtaining the more efficient MDO framework, an improved CSSO (Concurrent Subspace Optimization) strategy which is based on DOE (Design Of Experiment) and RSM (Response Surface Model) methods is proposed in this paper; and an improved DE (Differential Evolution) algorithm is recommended to solve the system-level and discipline-level optimization problems in MDO framework. The improved CSSO strategy and DE algorithm are evaluated by utilizing the numerical test problem. The result shows that the efficiency of improved methods proposed by this paper is significantly increased. The coupled problem of VCE (Variable Cycle Engine) conceptual design is solved by utilizing improved CSSO strategy, and the design parameter given by improved CSSO strategy is better than the original one. The integrated performance of VCE is significantly improved.

Abstract. For the levee strengthening project Krachtige IJsseldijken Krimpenerwaard (KIJK) a study has been done to examine all buildings along 10 km of levee. These buildings are an important factor in the design stage, because of its sensitivity to deformations due to the natural compaction of the soft deposits (creep) and the potential effects of the levee strengthening. This paper covers the quantification of building settlement due to natural subsidence using InSAR. Research is performed in the city archives to establish the characteristics of the buildings, such as the foundation type. Although the city archive is well organised, it is not complete. The building data density is substantially improved using InSAR information. This enhanced data set is a key factor in establishing an consistent assessment of the risk of damage for the different levee strengthening alternatives.

The article is devoted to the coverage of legislative guarantees for the whistleblowers`s protection in order to improve and develop national legislation regarding corruption prevention. Combatting corruption is an urgent issue for Ukraine today, as one of the reasons for the ineffective work of the state apparatus is corruption, the essence of which is that civil servants performancing their duties are endowed with public authority, which in combination with the unscrupulous performance of their official duties, leads to the fact that they have personal interests, which differ in content and direction from the primary tasks of the civil service as a whole. Corruption whistleblowers are a key factor in detecting corruption, and therefore they must be protected by guarantees at the legislative level. A legislative guarantees research of the whistleblowers` protection proves that such real protection can only be guaranteed by a separate special law that will create an effective mechanism for disseminating socially necessary information and will clearly prescribe legislative guarantees. The information disclosure of harm or threat to public interests is one of the most effective means of detecting and combating corruption and also serious economic offenses. In order to make the most of the benefits of disclosing information to the harm or threat to the public interest, there must be laws in the country that will provide whistleblowers with legislative guarantees not only for themselves, but also for their relatives. The main way to improve the legislative guarantees for the whistleblowers` protection is a promising draft act “On the protection of whistleblowers”. The adoption of the Law “On the protection of whistleblowers” will ensure the creation of a new effective system for preventing corruption on the basis of international standards, which will help in reducing the corruption level in the country, and thus – economic development and welfare. At the same time, it is promising to expand and clarify the regulations of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which guarantee the protection of whistleblowers. Key words: corruption, anti-corruption, evidence, corruption whistleblowers, protection of whistleblowers.

This study provides insight into the role of experience in facilitating conceptualisation process to enable students to harness relevant problems-solving skills. One of the key strategies of the current study is to analyse how students transform their ideas from abstract to physical form through the conceptualisation process within the studio learning environment. Two aspects were considered (1) the factors that influence the student's actions in designing, and (2) the role of critique in stimulating the student's conceptual design towards final design stage. Evidences were gathered from students' dynamic cognitive interactions with knowledge and experience as transpired through the studio environment. Keywords: Conceptualisation, conceptual design process, reflective knowledgeeISSN 2398-4295 © 2018.
