Influence of nozzle configuration on the flow field of multiple jets

Turbulent jet flows with multiple nozzle inlets are investigated computationally using OpenFOAM. The configurations vary from single to five axisymmetric nozzles. First-order closure is used with Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. Computed results are compared with the available experimental data. The effect of nozzle configuration on the jet flow field is discussed with predicted mean flow and turbulent flow data. Near-field of multiple jets shows the nonlinear behavior. Multiple jets show better performance in the near-field based on entrainment, secondary flows, and area-averaged turbulent kinetic energy. The downstream evolution of the multiple jets differs for configurations with and without central jet. The shape parameter confirms the evolution of the multiple jets towards an axisymmetric jet.

The flow around an inverted double-element airfoil in ground effect was studied numerically, by solving the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The predictive capabilities of six turbulence models with regards to the surface pressures, wake flow field, and sectional forces were quantified. The realizable k−ε model was found to offer improved predictions of the surface pressures and wake flow field. A number of ride heights were investigated, covering various force regions. The surface pressures, sectional forces, and wake flow field were all modeled accurately and offered improvements over previous numerical investigations. The sectional forces indicated that the main element generated the majority of the downforce, whereas the flap generated the majority of the drag. The near field and far field wake development was investigated and suggestions concerning reduction of the wake thickness were offered. The main element wake was found to greatly contribute to the overall wake thickness with the contribution increasing as the ride height decreased.

Parallel underexpanded round jets system has been widely used in engineering applications, and the flow field structures are very complex because of the jets interaction. In this paper, we studied the near-field mixing phenomenon in parallel dual underexpanded jets numerically by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations. The numerical results agree well with experimental data acquired by particle image velocimetry. Similar to plane jets, to some degree, two round jets are deflected towards the dual nozzle symmetry plane; the flow field can also be divided into three regions. Meanwhile, attempts have been made to predict merge point and combine point locations on certain cross profile of computational domain by correlating them with jet spacing and jet pressure ratio. The jet spacing plays an important role in jets interaction, and jet interaction decreases with the increase in jet spacing. The jets interaction in terms of merge (combine) point and pressure varies significantly while the jet spacing differs. Additionally, as pressure ratio increases, the effect of jet interaction decreases, and the merge (combine) point location moves downstream.

Three-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are solved to investigate the unsteady flow behavior in a transonic centrifugal compressor. The computational model is a high compression ratio centrifugal compressor (4:1) consisted of an inlet duct, an impeller (15 main blades and 15 splitters) and a diffuser vane with 24 two-dimensional wedge vanes. The aim of this study is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the ability of a hybrid scale-adaptive simulation (SAS) turbulent model to characterize the transient flow structures within the compressor passages. The main idea of SAS approach, an improved URANS (unsteady Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes) model, is based on the introduction of von Karman length scale into the turbulent scale equation which results in LES-like behavior in unsteady regions of the flow field. A numerical sensitivity test is performed to validate the computational results in terms of pressure ratio and compressor efficiency. Instantaneous and mean flow field analyses are presented in the impeller and the vaned diffuser. Applying transient simulations, it is shown that the interaction between the pressure waves and the surface pressure of the diffuser blades leads to a pulsating behavior within the diffuser. Moreover, spectral analysis is evaluated to analyze the BPF tonal noise as the main noise source of centrifugal compressors. In addition, the current SAS results are compared with those of the URANS-SST (shear stress transport) approach to show the ability of SAS approach in the prediction of the turbulent structures where the SAS model leads to a much better resolution of the unsteady fluctuations. This study shows that the current SAS approach, as an alternative to the existing hybrid RANS/LES methods, is promising in terms of prediction of transient phenomena like LES, but with a substantially reduced turn-around time.

AbstractPrevious work has shown that aspects of the evolution of large-scale structures, particularly in forced and transitional mixing layers and jets, can be described by linear and nonlinear stability theories. However, questions persist as to the choice of the basic (steady) flow field to perturb, and the extent to which disturbances in natural (unforced), initially turbulent jets may be modelled with the theory. For unforced jets, identification is made difficult by the lack of a phase reference that would permit a portion of the signal associated with the instability wave to be isolated from other, uncorrelated fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which pressure and velocity fluctuations in subsonic, turbulent round jets can be described aslinearperturbations to the mean flow field. The disturbances are expanded about the experimentally measured jet mean flow field, and evolved using linear parabolized stability equations (PSE) that account, in an approximate way, for the weakly non-parallel jet mean flow field. We utilize data from an extensive microphone array that measures pressure fluctuations just outside the jet shear layer to show that, up to an unknown initial disturbance spectrum, the phase, wavelength, and amplitude envelope of convecting wavepackets agree well with PSE solutions at frequencies and azimuthal wavenumbers that can be accurately measured with the array. We next apply the proper orthogonal decomposition to near-field velocity fluctuations measured with particle image velocimetry, and show that the structure of the most energetic modes is also similar to eigenfunctions from the linear theory. Importantly, the amplitudes of the modes inferred from the velocity fluctuations are in reasonable agreement with those identified from the microphone array. The results therefore suggest that, to predict, with reasonable accuracy, the evolution of the largest-scale structures that comprise the most energetic portion of the turbulent spectrum of natural jets, nonlinear effects need only be indirectly accounted for by considering perturbations to the mean turbulent flow field, while neglecting any non-zero frequency disturbance interactions.

The flow field in an inertial impactor was studied experimentally with a water model by means of a flow visualization technique. The influence of such parameters as Reynolds number and jet-to-plate distance on the flow field was determined. The Navier-Stokes equations describing the laminar flow field in the impactor were solved numerically by means of a finite difference relaxation method. The theoretical results were found to be in good agreement with the empirical observations made with the water model.

The interaction between a fluid flow and a transversely isotropic porous medium is described. A homogenized model is used to treat the flow field in the porous region, and different interface conditions, needed to match solutions at the boundary between the pure fluid and the porous regions, are evaluated. Two problems in different flow regimes (laminar and turbulent) are considered to validate the system, which includes inertia in the leading-order equations for the permeability tensor through a Oseen approximation. The components of the permeability, which characterize microscopically the porous medium and determine the flow field at the macroscopic scale, are reasonably well estimated by the theory, both in the laminar and the turbulent case. This is demonstrated by comparing the model’s results to both experimental measurements and direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations which resolve the flow also through the pores of the medium.

We analyze a nonoverlapping domain decomposition method for the treatment of two-dimensional compressible viscous flows around airfoils. Since at some distance to the given profile the inertial forces are strongly dominant, there the viscosity effects are neglected and the flow is assumed to be inviscid. Accordingly, we consider a decomposition of the original flow field into a bounded computational domain (near field) and a complementary outer region (far field). The compressible Navier–Stokes equations are used close to the profile and are coupled with the linearized Euler equations in the far field by appropriate transmission conditions, according to the physical properties and the mathematical type of the corresponding partial differential equations. We present some results of flow around the NACA0012 airfoil and develop an a posteriori analysis of the approximate solution, showing that conservation of mass, momentum and energy are asymptotically attained with the linear model in the far field.

A computer code predicting the flows through the centrifugal compressor with the radial vaneless diffuser was developed and applied to investigate the detailed flowfields, i.e., secondary flows and jet-wake type flow pattern in design and off-design conditions. Various parameters such as slip factors, aerodynamic blockages, entropy generation and two-zone modeling which are widely used in design and performance prediction, were discussed.A control volume method based on a general curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and SIMPLER algorithm was used to solve the pressure linked continuity equation. The standardk-εturbulence model was used to obtain the eddy viscosity. Performance of the code was verified using the measured data for the Eckardt impeller.

Abstract When simulating elastohydrodynamic lubrication, two main approaches are usually followed to predict the pressure and fluid film thickness distribution throughout the contact. The conventional approach relies on the Reynolds equation to describe the thin lubricant film, which is coupled to a Boussinesq description of the linear elastic deformation of the solids. A more accurate, yet a time-consuming method is the use of computational fluid dynamics in which the Navier–Stokes equations describe the flow of the thin lubricant film, coupled to a finite element solver for the description of the local contact deformation. This investigation aims at assessing both methods for different lubrication conditions in different elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regimes and quantify their differences to understand advantages and limitations of both methods. This investigation shows how the results from both approaches deviate for three scenarios: (1) inertial contributions (Re > 1), i.e., thick films, high speed, and low viscosity; (2) high shear stresses leading to secondary flows; and (3) large deformations of the solids leading to inaccuracies of the Boussinesq equation.

An extensive experimental analysis was carried out at Politecnico di Milano on the subject of unsteady flow in high pressure (HP) turbine stages. In this paper the unsteady flow measured downstream of a modern HP turbine stage is discussed. Traverses in two planes downstream of the rotor are considered and, in one of them, the effects of two very different axial gaps are investigated: the maximum axial gap, equal to one stator axial chord, is chosen to “switch off” the rotor inlet unsteadiness, while the nominal gap, equal to 1/3 of the stator axial chord, is representative of actual engines. The experiments were performed by means of a fast-response pressure probe, allowing for two-dimensional phase-resolved flow measurements in a bandwidth of 80 kHz. The main properties of the probe and the data processing are described. The core of the paper is the analysis of the unsteady rotor aerodynamics; for this purpose, instantaneous snapshots of the rotor flow in the relative frame are used. The rotor mean flow and its interaction with the stator wakes and vortices are also described. In the outer part of the channel only the rotor cascade effects can be observed, with a dominant role played by the tip-leakage flow and by the rotor tip passage vortex. In the hub region, where the secondary flows downstream of the stator are stronger, the persistence of stator vortices is slightly visible in the maximum stator-rotor axial gap configuration, while in the minimum stator-rotor axial gap configuration the interaction with the rotor vortices dominates the flow field. A fair agreement with the wakes and vortices transport models has been achieved. A discussion of the interaction process is reported giving particular emphasis to the effects of the different cascade axial gaps. Some final considerations on the effects of the different axial gap over the stage performances are reported.
