Layered composite materials can be treated as transverse isotropy in mechanics. According to basic equations of transverse isotropy, the compatibility equation in polar coordinates is firstly formulated. Then the analytical solution for a deep circular hole considering shear stress and two unequal normal stresses in layered composite materials is derived. The solution shows that the radial displacement is affected by the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio in both the isotropic plane and the direction of symmetry axis in spite of the hypothesis that the hole transect is parallel to the isotropic plane.

An engineering approach to estimation of the transverse shear stresses in layered composites is developed. The technique is based on the well-known D. I. Zhuravsky equation for shear stresses in an isotropic beam upon transverse bending. In general, application of this equation to a composite beam is incorrect due to the heterogeneity of the composite structure. According to the proposed method, at the first stage of its implementation, a transition to the equivalent model of a homogeneous beam is made, for which the Zhuravsky formula is valid. The transition is carried out by changing the shape of the cross section of the beam, provided that the bending stiffness and generalized elastic modulus remain the same. The calculated shear stresses in the equivalent beam are then converted to the stress values in the original composite beam from the equilibrium condition. The main equations and definitions of the method as well as the analytical equation for estimation of the transverse shear stress in a composite beam are presented. The method is verified by comparing the analytical solution and the results of the numerical solution of the problem by finite element method (FEM). It is shown that laminate stacking sequence has a significant impact both on the character and on the value of the transverse shear stress distribution. The limits of the applicability of the developed technique attributed to the conditions of the validity of the hypothesis of straight normal are considered. It is noted that under this hypothesis the shear stresses do not depend on the layer shear modulus, which explains the absence of this parameter in the obtained equation. The classical theory of laminate composites is based on the similar assumptions, which gives ground to use this equation for an approximate estimation of the transverse shear stresses in in a layered composite package.

Due to the importance of wall shear stress effect and dust fluid in daily life fluid problems. This paper aims to discover the influence of wall shear stress on dust fluids of fluctuating flow. The flow is considered between two parallel plates that are non-conducting. Due to the transformation of heat, the fluid flow is generated. We consider every dust particle having spherical uniformly disperse in the base fluid. The perturb solution is obtained by applying the Poincare-Lighthill perturbation technique (PLPT). The fluid velocity and shear stress are discussed for the different parameters like Grashof number, magnetic parameter, radiation parameter, and dusty fluid parameter. Graphical results for fluid and dust particles are plotted through Mathcad-15. The behavior of base fluid and dusty fluid is matching for different embedded parameters.

Microfluidics is an essential technique used in the development of in vitro models for mimicking complex biological systems. The microchip with microfluidic flows offers the precise control of the microenvironment where the cells can grow and structure inside channels to resemble in vivo conditions allowing a proper cellular response investigation. Hence, this study aimed to develop low-cost, simple microchips to simulate the shear stress effect on the human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Differentially from other biological microfluidic devices described in the literature, we used readily available tools like heat-lamination, toner printer, laser cutter and biocompatible double-sided adhesive tapes to bind different layers of materials together, forming a designed composite with a microchannel. In addition, we screened alternative substrates, including polyester-toner, polyester-vinyl, glass, Permanox® and polystyrene to compose the microchips for optimizing cell adhesion, then enabling these microdevices when coupled to a syringe pump, the cells can withstand the fluid shear stress range from 1 to 4 dyne cm2. The cell viability was monitored by acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) staining to detect live and dead cells. As a result, our fabrication processes were cost-effective and straightforward. The materials investigated in the assembling of the microchips exhibited good cell viability and biocompatibility, providing a dynamic microenvironment for cell proliferation. Therefore, we suggest that these microchips could be available everywhere, allowing in vitro assays for daily laboratory experiments and further developing the organ-on-a-chip concept.

ABSTRACTIn composite materials for electro-mechanical applications, the importance of the mode in which the constituent phases are interconnected (connectivity) was stressed. For the tensor properties of mechanical, piezoelectric, and dielectric behavior, controlling the manner in which fields and fluxes thread through the composite can make orders of magnitude change in the coupled properties.Examples were drawn from piezoelectric ceramic:polymer composites for uniaxial and hydrostatic (hydrophone) pressure sensing where the 1:3 connected transversely reinforced composite can be shown to exhibit a figure of merit more than 103 that of the piezoceramic phase alone. In these systems, the importance of poisson ratio effects in the polymer phase were evident, and some new composite systems where the hydrostatic stiffness of the elastomer phases may be better exploited were considered. In electro-thermal applications such as in pyroelectric composites, the requirements of small-size and low-thermal mass put rigorous limits upon the scale of the composite microstructure. Techniques which achieve the appropriate scaling were described and preliminary data showed strong enhancement of the secondary effects in these composites were presented.

The flow between two parallel plates driven by a pulsatile pressure gradient was studied analytically with a second-order velocity expansion. The resulting velocity distribution was compared with a numerical solution of the momentum equation to validate the analytical solution, with excellent agreement between the two approaches. From the velocity distribution, the analytical computation of the discharge, wall shear stress, discharge, and dispersion enhancements were also computed. The influence on the solution of the dimensionless governing parameters and of the value of the rheological index was discussed.
