Rise in the environmental problems in past few years has led to discussions and debate concerning the actions required from government, corporate sector and society at large. Realizing that espousal of green marketing practices is now inevitable, all concerned stakeholders including the business firms are assuming responsibility to safeguard environment from further degradation by actively engaging in eco-friendly practices. It is in this backdrop that the current research delves into the green practices that specifically hold relevance for manufacturing firms. Using the technique of CFA on the response set obtained from 77 key officials, the study confirms the composition of green dimensions and examines the performance of each of the constituents on operational performance of sample firms. The study additionally contributes to the existing literature by analysing the role of management’s environment orientation and firm size in influencing the aforesaid impact and linkages. The insights provided in the article would be useful for the management of manufacturing firms in formulating appropriate mix of green activities that could enable them in effectively attaining their operational objectives. The limitations acknowledged in the present work pave way for future studies in the area of green marketing.

- This work provides results from a survey based on a very large sample (25,000 firms) of Italian manufacturing firms carried out by MET in 2008. This survey, completed straight before the deepening of the financial crisis, aims to offer a detailed picture of the Italian industrial system with its regional, dimensional and sector-based variability. We show some evidence related to innovation and R&D activities. Intense heterogeneity among Italian regions is identified (other than north/south dualism). The main contribution of the work is to provide some measures of innovation and R&D for the smallest firms. Firm size is particularly relevant in explaining the intensity of R&D and the spread of innovation. Nevertheless, there is a key role of small firms in explaining the aggregate innovation performance both at regional and national level. Strong links between Innovation, R&D and Internationalisation are confirmed. R&D activities among small firms have specific characteristics: external research is widespread with an important role played by laboratories shared with other firms.

<abstract> <p>The current study investigates the influence of financial resources on environmental and financial performance with the mediating role of green practices (innovation) in manufacturing firms of the emerging economy, Pakistan. The research model and its proposed hypothesis was using 294 manufacturing firms' samples, for fruitful insights, the hypothesis was tested through a structured equation model using Smart PLS 3. Our results exhibited a positive and significant impact of financial resources on financial performance but not on environmental performance. However, green innovation fully mediates the relationship between financial resources and financial performance, while partially mediate the relationship between financial resources and environmental performance. Considering our insight, we suggest to the government that financially support the SMEs sector because they have a lack of tangible and intangible resources due to small size, and to easily adapt the green practices.</p> </abstract>

The medical sector has entered an epoch of rapid innovation and strengthened competition that demands more creativity. That rapidly changing environment demand more flexibility for the operations. Although, various studies are available on the effects of multiple approaches on operational flexibility still JIT, TQM, and SCM never have been verified in the same study. This is empirically varification, a questionnaire has been distributed by convenience sampling in the medical sector of Jordan. Total 318 responses received and SPSS have been applied for multiple regression analysis. It has found that all three approaches have positive effects on operational flexibility but very minor even no approach has significant effects. This study is unique because it applies three diversified approaches in the same study and findings are unique. It is recommended for all managers of a medical sector that JIT, TQM, and SCM are not beneficial for operational flexibility for developing countries due to lack of resources, technology, and education. This study will help the researches that more studies need to verify for Jordan hospitals. Moreover, future studies can be done to identify the reasons behind these unique findings.

PurposeThe paper aims to assess the influence of process quality management (PQM) practices on a firm's operational performance (OP) and investigate the mediating role of a firm's learning and development orientation (LDO) in the PQM–OP relationship. The paper also assesses the extent to which the proposed mediation is moderated by senior management support (SMS).Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on the sociotechnical system theory to carry out a survey study of 278 functional managers from various manufacturing firms in India through a postal mail survey approach. The response rate has been improved by frequent telephone follow-ups. The collected data was analyzed for mediation of LDO and moderated mediation of SMS in the proposed framework using Hayes's PROCESS Macro in statistical package for social sciences.FindingsThe research findings show that both PQM and LDO lead to better performance and should be encouraged. LDO was found to partially mediate the effect of PQM on the firm's OP. The results also show that an enhanced learning capability of an organization can significantly influence improvement in OP through a stronger support of senior management.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study explored the mediating role of LDO in the relationship between PQM and OP, while providing a future research opportunity for an empirical review of the mediating effect of LDO between the effects of just-in-time, maintenance and process benchmarking activities on OP.Practical implicationsTo transform PQM activities into a competitive advantage, firms need to develop learning capabilities. Senior managers in the manufacturing industry should strongly focus upon creating a learning-centered work culture to improve performance and productivity.Originality/valueThe study provides insights into the type of people-related activities that manufacturing firms should undertake to enhance their OP. Few studies in the extant literature have used SMS as a moderator to improve LDO's impact on business operations. The study aims at bridging this gap.

Besides stomata, the photosynthetic CO2 pathway also involves the transport of CO2 from the sub-stomatal air spaces inside to the carboxylation sites in the chloroplast stroma, where Rubisco is located. This pathway is far to be a simple and direct way, formed by series of consecutive barriers that the CO2 should cross to be finally assimilated in photosynthesis, known as the mesophyll conductance (gm). Therefore, the gm reflects the pathway through different air, water and biophysical barriers within the leaf tissues and cell structures. Currently, it is known that gm can impose the same level of limitation (or even higher depending of the conditions) to photosynthesis than the wider known stomata or biochemistry. In this mini-review, we are focused on each of the gm determinants to summarize the current knowledge on the mechanisms driving gm from anatomical to metabolic and biochemical perspectives. Special attention deserve the latest studies demonstrating the importance of the molecular mechanisms driving anatomical traits as cell wall and the chloroplast surface exposed to the mesophyll airspaces (Sc/S) that significantly constrain gm. However, even considering these recent discoveries, still is poorly understood the mechanisms about signaling pathways linking the environment a/biotic stressors with gm responses. Thus, considering the main role of gm as a major driver of the CO2 availability at the carboxylation sites, future studies into these aspects will help us to understand photosynthesis responses in a global change framework.

Abstract. After experiencing an emotional event, people either seek out others’ presence (social affiliation) or avoid others’ presence (social isolation). The determinants and effects of social affiliation are now well-known, but social psychologists have not yet thoroughly studied social isolation. This study aims to ascertain which motives and corresponding regulation strategies participants report for social isolation following negative emotional events. A group of 96 participants retrieved from memory an actual negative event that led them to temporarily socially isolate themselves and freely listed up to 10 motives for social isolation. Through semantic categorization of the 423 motives reported by the participants, we found that “cognitive clarification” and “keeping one’s distance” – that is, the need for cognitive regulation and the refusal of socioaffective regulation, respectively – were the most commonly and quickly reported motives for social isolation. We discuss the findings in terms of ideas for future studies aimed at clarifying the role of social isolation in health situations.
