In the previous studies on the hydrostatic thrust bearing, the differences between the theoretical results and experimental results are obvious when the inertia parameter S and the ratio of supply hole radius to bearing radius r0/ R become large enough. To explain the differences, in this study, the inertia effect on the region of supply hole is considered in discussing the static characteristics of hydrostatic thrust bearing, and then new expressions of pressure, load capacity, and flow rate are given. For the continuous parallel bearing, the results of this study agree well with experiments, thus there is no need for the extra modified inertia theory. For the step bearing with a large inertia parameter (e.g., S = 2), the results of this study agree with experiments on the recess region, and are closer to the experimental results than those of old method on the region of bearing land. So when the inertia parameter S and the ratio of supply hole radius to bearing radius r0/ R are large enough, the inertia effect on the region of supply hole cannot be ignored in discussing the static characteristics of hydrostatic thrust bearing.

In the present analysis, the interactions of thermal effects and velocity slip on the performance of externally pressurized porous incompressible gas thrust bearing have been studied. Numerical results for load capacity, mass flow rate, and static stiffness have been obtained and their behavior is illustrated in figures. The results for slip as well as no-slip condition have also been compared with the experimental results of Gargiulo and Gilmour [7].

Externally pressurized supersonic gas thrust bearings whose generation of load capacity is substantially independent of the viscosity of working fluids, have been proposed and analyzed by the authors. This report presents the experimental results of the static characteristics of this new type of bearings. The experimental results including load capacity, stiffness, mass flow rate, and pressure distributions in the bearing clearance, generally show a good agreement with the theoretical predictions and verify the validity of this new bearing. The effect of an orifice to improve the stiffness is also examined. Some problems which should be solved to put the bearing in practical use are pointed out.

Foil bearing is considered to be a promising supporting technology in high-speed centrifugal machinery. Due to the high-speed shearing effect in the viscous lubricant film, heat generation could not be ignored. In this paper, a thermo-elastic model of the multi-leaf foil thrust bearing is proposed to predict its thermal and static characteristics. In the model, modified Reynolds equation, energy equation, and Kirchhoff equation are solved in a coupling way. The contact area between the foil and welding plate is taken into account. Besides, the effect of cooling air on the bearing temperature is investigated. The ultimate load capacity and transient overload failure process of the bearing is analyzed and discussed. The effect of rotation speed on the bearing temperature is more obvious than that of the bearing load. The bearing temperature drops obviously by introducing the cooling air, and the cooling effect is improved with the supply pressure. The transient overload failure of the bearing occurs when the bearing load exceeds the ultimate value.

This paper proposes a new type of a self-controlled restrictor which can achieve a very high bearing stiffness in hydrostatic bearings. This self-controlled restrictor employs a floating disk to control the mass flow rate of the oil entering the bearing clearance according to changes of the applied load. Furthermore, a hydrostatic bearing with this restrictor can theoretically achieve an infinite stiffness when the mass of a floating disk is assumed to be zero. The static characteristics of a rectangular hydrostatic thrust bearing with this self-controlled restrictor are theoretically and experimentally investigated. It was consequently shown that the proposed hydrostatic thrust bearing can achieve a very high stiffness (nearly infinite stiffness) in a very wide range of applied load independent of supply pressure.

Abstract In this paper, single-bump foil models with different thickness and double-bump foil models with different initial clearances are established. The structural stiffness and equivalent viscous damping of double-bump foil and single-bump foil are analyzed by finite element simulation. The results show that the double-layer bump foil has variable stiffness and the displacement of the upper bump is greater than the initial gap when the two-layer bumps contact. A model for obtaining static characteristics of aerodynamic compliant foil thrust bearing is established on the basis of the stiffness characteristics of the double-bump foil. This paper solves gas Reynolds equation, the gas film thickness equation and the foil stiffness characteristic equation via the finite element method and the finite difference method. The static characteristics of the thrust bearings including the bearing pressure distribution, the gas film thickness and the friction power consumption have been obtained. The static characteristics of two kinds of foils have been compared and analyzed, and the effect of initial clearance on the static performance of double-bump foil bearings is studied. The results show that the double-bump foil structure can effectively improve the load capacity of thrust bearing. In addition, the static performance of double-bump foil thrust bearings is between the performance of the single-bump foil bearing and the double-bump foil bearing whose foil’s clearance is zero. The smaller the initial clearance is, the easier it will be to form a stable double-bump foil supporting structure.

The paper discusses the redesign of a high-speed turbocharger for improved bearing life and mechanical operation. The bearings were changed from a pair of combination journal/thrust bearings to a pair of redesigned journal bearings with double acting thrust bearing at the center of the unit. Internal oil passages, drain cavities, and seals were also revised. These modifications resulted in reduced oil leakage across end seals, reduced coke buildup at the turbine, increased thrust load capacity, and improved rotordynamics. Both the analytical and experimental results, which consisted of bearing performance and vibration data of original and modified systems are presented.

Experimental and theoretical results are presented for the single-breath inhalation of an aerosol with 0.5- and 1-micrometer particles of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate droplets. Experimental results show that the recovery from the tidal volume decreases with increasing tidal volume and increases with increasing flow rate. The reserve volume recovery does not vary much with either flow rate or tidal volume. Experimental values for reserve volume recoveries for 1-micrometer particles were slightly larger than those for 0.5-micrometer particles, indicating intrinsic particle motion plays some role in the mixing process for larger particles. Calculated results from a convection-diffusion equation for the aerosol concentration are compared with the experimental results, with the aim of testing the hypotheses of the theoretical model. Detailed comparisons between theory and experiment for the exhalation profiles demonstrate that most of the mixing between the tidal and reserve volumes occurs in the alveolar region of the lung, as postulated in the model. Mechanical mixing in the upper airways plays a relatively minor role in the overall mixing process. Theoretical results for the recoveries show the same trends with tidal volume and flow rate as does experiment, and the agreement is good. Calculated values for the mixing of the tidal aerosol range from about 0.06 at a tidal volume of 400 cm3 to 0.23 at 2,000 cm3, and no variations with flow rate was found.

The main objective of the paper is to study the effect of rotary inertia and gyroscopic moments due to lumped masses on the dynamics of two spool aeroengine rotors. Since the rotary inertia effect is well established, the thrust of the paper is on the effect of gyroscopic moments. Quantitative as well as qualitative aspects are studied. Effect of gyroscopics and rotary inertia on rotor critical speeds and unbalance response are studied for several rotors with particular reference to relative LP and HP rotor speeds. A two spool rig which resembles an actual aeroengine has been designed and built. Experiments have been conducted on two configurations of the rig in order to verify the theoretical results obtained by a formulation developed using the method of extended transfer matrices, for the two spool rotor with two intershaft bearings. A reasonably good correlation between the theoretical and experimental results is observed.

Abstract This paper presents experimental and theoretical analysis of bolts employed as shear connectors in circular concrete-filled steel tube columns (CFTs). The theoretical results, obtained from ABNT NBR 16239:2013 formulations, were compared with the experimental results. A series of push-out tests were carried out, where the diameter and length of the bolts, the number of connectors and the concrete strength were varied. From the experimental results, it was observed that the equations from ABNT NBR 16239:2013 are conservative. Therefore, it is proposed an adjustment to the formulations in order to consider the concrete confinement. It was also verified that increments in the diameter and the length of the bolt increase the load capacity of the connector. However, the variation of the quantity of bolts and the concrete strength did not interfere in the load capacity.

ABSTRACTThis paper is former part of serial studies to investigate the influence of design parameters of tapered-spool type restrictors on static characteristics of hydrostatic bearing. The flow rates passing restrictors can determine the static characteristics of hydrostatic bearings. In this part an analytical method which includes formulas and solving is utilized to simulate dimensionless flow rate in both single-action and double-action tapered-spool restrictors. The numerical results illustrate the variations of flow rates with respect to the change of pressure and pressure difference, respectively. The findings give that the design parameters of tapered-spool restrictors and the useful range of recess pressure. The following part will depend on this paper results to study load capacity and static stiffness of hydrostatic bearing compensated by tapered-spool restrictor.
