Flow directed spark stretch and flame propagation in a high-tumble production engine

This study performs endoscopic high-speed imaging to enhance the fundamental knowledge of in-cylinder flow structure and flame development process in a selected high-tumble production engine. The endoscopic high-speed particle image velocimetry (eHS-PIV) was performed for varied engine speeds and intake valve closing (IVC) timings to evaluate their impact on the in-cylinder flow structure in a motored engine condition. On another endoscope engine sharing the same hardware, high-speed flame imaging was conducted to visualise spark stretch and flame propagation. The flow and flame measurements were repeated for over 100 cycles and the ensemble-averaged results are compared. The eHS-PIV showed that a strong tumble vortex is generated during the piston compression with the flow directed towards the exhaust side. As the piston reaches top dead centre (TDC), however, a complex flow breakup involving multiple flow components occurs. This is followed by lateral flow vectors travelling back towards the intake side, which is termed as the bounce-back flow. For a tested engine speed range of 1700–2700 revolutions per minute (rpm), 2500 rpm shows the most significant bounce-back flow as a result of competition between the remaining exhaust-ward tumble flow strength and the newly formed bounce-back flow strength. At a retarded IVC timing, the flow loss leads to a weakened tumble flow and subsequently no bounce-back flow formation to maintain the exhaust-ward TDC flow direction. From the comparison between the flow results and spark/flame high-speed images, a strong positive correlation is found between the TDC flow direction and spark plasma stretch, and subsequently the flame propagation direction. The findings indicate that the TDC flow direction should be considered as a key parameter in the engine design and operating condition settings.

Among multiple factors that affect the quality of combustion, the intricate and complex interaction between in-cylinder flow/turbulent field and flame propagation is one of the most important. In this study, true simultaneous, crank-angle resolved imaging of the flame front propagation and the measurement of flow-field was achieved by the application of high-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The technique was successfully implemented to avoid problems commonly associated with PIV in a combustion environment, such as interferences and reflections, avoided thanks to a number of adjustments and arrangements. All experiments were carried out inside a single-cylinder optical gasoline engine operated at 1200 rpm, using port fuel injection (PFI) with stoichiometric mixtures. It was found that the global vortex location of the tumble motion heavily influences the flame growth direction as well as the flame shape, mainly due to the tumble-induced flow across the ignition source. The flame propagation also influences the flow-field such that the pre-ignition flow can be maintained and the flow of unburned region surrounding the flame front will be enhanced.

The fluid flow through a stenosed artery and its bypass graft in an anastomosis can substantially influence the outcome of bypass surgery. To help improve our understanding of this and related issues, the steady Navier-Stokes flows are computed in an idealized arterial bypass system with partially occluded host artery. Both the residual flow issued from the stenosis—which is potentially important at an earlier stage after grafting—and the complex flow structure induced by the bypass graft are investigated. Seven geometric models, including symmetric and asymmetric stenoses in the host artery, and two major aspects of the bypass system, namely, the effects of area reduction and stenosis asymmetry, are considered. By analyzing the flow characteristics in these configurations, it is found that (1) substantial area reduction leads to flow recirculation in both upstream and downstream of the stenosis and in the host artery near the toe, while diminishes the recirculation zone in the bypass graft near the bifurcation junction, (2) the asymmetry and position of the stenosis can affect the location and size of these recirculation zones, and (3) the curvature of the bypass graft can modify the fluid flow structure in the entire bypass system.

Cooling of the turbine nozzle endwall is challenging due to its complex flow field involving strong secondary flows. Increasingly-effective cooling schemes are required to meet the higher turbine inlet temperatures required by today’s gas turbine applications. Therefore, in order to cool the endwall surface near the pressure side of the airfoil and the trailing edge extended area, the spent cooling air from the airfoil film cooling and pressure side discharge slots, referred to as “phantom cooling” is utilized. This paper studies the effect of compound angled pressure side injection on nozzle endwall surface. The measurements were conducted in a high speed linear cascade, which consists of three nozzle vanes and four flow passages. Two nozzle test models with a similar film cooling design were investigated, one with an axial pressure side film cooling row and trailing edge slots; the other with the same cooling features but with compound angled injection, aiming at the test endwall. Phantom cooling effectiveness on the endwall was measured using a Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique through the mass transfer analogy. Two-dimensional phantom cooling effectiveness distributions on the endwall surface are presented for four MFR (Mass Flow Ratio) values in each test case. Then the phantom cooling effectiveness distributions are pitchwise-averaged along the axial direction and comparisons were made to show the effect of the compound angled injection. The results indicated that the endwall phantom cooling effectiveness increases with the MFR significantly. A compound angle of the pressure side slots also enhanced the endwall phantom cooling significantly. For combined injections, the phantom cooling effectiveness is much higher than the pressure side slots injection only in the endwall downstream extended area.

For increasing the thermal engine efficiency, faster combustion and low cycle-to-cycle variation are required. In PFI engines the organization of in-cylinder flow structure is thus mandatory for achieving increased efficiency. In particular the formation of a coherent tumble vortex with dimensions comparable to engine stroke largely promotes proper turbulence production extending the engine tolerance to dilute/lean mixture. For motorbike and scooter applications, tumble has been considered as an effective way to further improve combustion system efficiency and to achieve emission reduction since layout and weight constraints limit the adoption of more advanced concepts. In literature chamber geometry was found to have a significant influence on bulk motion and turbulence levels at ignition time, while intake system influences mainly the formation of tumble vortices during suction phase. The most common engine parameters believed to affect in-cylinder flow structure are: 1. Intake duct angle; 2. Inlet valve shape and lift; 3. Piston shape; 4. Pent-roof angle. The present paper deals with the computational analysis of three different head shapes equipping a scooter/motorcycle engine and their influence on the tumble flow formation and breakdown, up to the final turbulent kinetic energy distribution at spark plug. The engine in analysis is a 3-valves pent-roof motorcycle engine. The three dimensional CFD simulations were run at 6500 rpm with AVL FIRE code on the three engines characterised by the same piston, valve lift, pent-roof angle and compression ratio. They differ only in head shape and squish areas. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate the influence of different head shapes on in-cylinder flow motion, with particular care to tumble motion and turbulence level at ignition time. Moreover, an analysis of the mutual influence between tumble motion and squish motion was carried out in order to assess the role of both these motions in promoting a proper level of turbulence at ignition time close to spark plug in small 3-valves engines.

Gas-liquid two-phase flows in minichannels and microchannels display a unique flow pattern called ring film flow, in which stable waves of relatively large amplitudes appear at seemingly regular intervals and propagate in the flow direction. In the present work, the velocity characteristics of gas slugs, ring films, and their features such as the gas slug length, flow phenomena and frictional pressure drop for nitrogen-distilled water and nitrogen-30 wt% ethanol water solution have been investigated experimentally. Four kinds of circular microchannels with diameters of 100 μm, 150 μm, 250 μm and 518 μm were used. The effects of tube diameter and physical properties, especially the surface tension and liquid viscosity, on the flow patterns, gas slug length and the two-phase frictional pressure drop have been investigated by using a high speed camera at 6,000 frames per second. The flow characteristics of gas slugs, liquid slugs and the waves of ring film are presented in this paper.

The natural convection is studied in a cavity witch the lower half is filled with a porous media that is saturated with a first fluid (liquid), and the upper is filled with a second fluid (gas). The horizontal borders are heated and cooled by uniform heat fluxes and vertical ones are adiabatic. The formulation of the problem is based on the Darcy-Brinkman model. The density variation is taken into account by the Boussinesq approximation. The system of the coupled equations is resolved by the classic finite volume method. The numerical results show that the variation of the conductivity of the porous media influences strongly the flow structure and the heat transfer as well as in upper that in the lower zones. The effect of conductivity is conditioned by the porosity which plays a very significant roll on the heat transfer. The structures of this flow show that this kind of problem with specific boundary conditions generates a complex flow structure of several contra-rotating two to two cells, in the upper half of the cavity.

The understanding and accurate prediction of turbulent flow separation on smooth surfaces is still a challenging task because the separation and the reattachment locations are not fixed in space and time. Consequently, reliable experimental data are essential for the validation of numerical flow simulations and the characterization and analysis of the complex flow physics. However, the uncertainty of the existing near-wall flow measurements make a precise analysis of the near-wall flow features, such as separation/reattachment locations and other predicted near-wall flow features which are under debate, often impossible. Therefore, the periodic hill experiment at TU Munich (ERCOFTAC test case 81) was repeated using high resolution particle image velocimetry and particle tracking velocimetry. The results confirm the strong effect of the spatial resolution on the near-wall flow statistics. Furthermore, it is shown that statistically stable values of the turbulent flow variables can only be obtained for averaging times which are challenging to realize with highly resolved large eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation techniques. Additionally, the analysis implies that regions of correlated velocity fluctuations with rather uniform streamwise momentum exist in the flow. Their size in the mean flow direction can be larger than the hill spacing. The possible impact of the correlated turbulent motion on the wake region is discussed, as this interaction might be important for the understanding and control of the flow separation dynamics on smooth bodies.
