Effects of screen-responsive visualization on data comprehension

Visualization interfaces designed for heterogeneous devices such as wall displays and mobile screens must be responsive to varying display dimensions, resolution, and interaction capabilities. In this paper, we report on two user studies of visual representations for large versus small displays. The goal of our experiments was to investigate differences between a large vertical display and a mobile hand-held display in terms of the data comprehension and the quality of resulting insights. To this end, we developed a visual interface with a coordinated multiple view layout for the large display and two alternative designs of the same interface – a space-saving boundary visualization layout and an overview layout – for the mobile condition. The first experiment was a controlled laboratory study designed to evaluate the effect of display size on the perception of changes in a visual representation, and yielded significant correctness differences even while completion time remained similar. The second evaluation was a qualitative study in a practical setting and showed that participants were able to easily associate and work with the responsive visualizations. Based on the results, we conclude the paper by providing new guidelines for screen-responsive visualization interfaces.

In 2012, the United Nations approved new Guidelines on the Use of Armed Private Security Companies by its agencies, funds and programmes. The Guidelines hold the potential to not only enhance the quality of armed security services contracted by the un, but also raise professional standards within the military and security industry more generally by serving as a model for other consumers and companies. Nevertheless, a close reading of the Guidelines indicates that there is still room for improvements. Drawing on best practices identified by industry associations, major clients and academic research, this article makes six recommendations for revision. Specifically, the article contends that expanding the scope, content and enforcement of the Guidelines would contribute to strengthening the control over private security contractors.

This chapter challenges traditional views on Iron Age dress. Recent research has greatly enhanced our understanding of how textiles were manufactured in Iron Age Europe. The variety of qualities, textures, techniques, raw materials, colours, and cuts give insights into the detailed knowledge of the craftspeople involved. Textiles used for dress, blankets, or furniture fittings were appreciated not only for their appearance, but also for the quality of the work. In everyday life, their optical qualities were used to express and signal gender, social roles and status, while the labour expended on textiles found in wealthy burials underlines both the status of the deceased and the extent of conspicuous consumption in funerary rituals—for instance, for wrapping grave furniture and goods. The chapter also looks at experimental data showing how labour-intensive textile production was, and the types of clothing and accessories found in different archaeological contexts or depicted in visual representations.

This study addresses the complex problems in taking a decision to achieve corporate objectives, to improve the quality of consumer care services, as well as care services in accordance with the wishes of the customer in Workshop Wijaya Toyota (PT Wijaya Motor Lestari) in partnership with PT Astra International Tbk. This research is descriptive, assigning a sample of 100 customers. Data were processed in the qualitative  methods using Quality Function Deployment and the result was displayed in a matrix House of Quality. The results show that strategies the workshop Wijaya Toyota applies to improving the quality of services are: the waiting room and toilet cleanliness, promoting warranty repair workshop, ensuring the accuracy of completion time of maintenance, speed of completion of the work, maintenance appropriate to their complaints, garage attendant explanation of maintenance, stock availability of original spare parts, direct workshop personnel explanation at the time of submission, garage attendant explanation upon delivery, transparent overall cost to be paid,  reasonableness price of original parts, friendliness and courtesy officer spare parts, and workshop personnel direct contact.

This paper presents a generalized job-shop problem taking into consideration transport time between workstations and setups machines in deadlock-free operating conditions. The automated transportation system, employing a number of automated guided vehicles is considered. The completion time of all jobs was applied as the optimization criterion. The created computational application was used to solve this problem in which chosen priority algorithms (FIFO, LIFO, LPT, SPT, EDD and LWR) were implemented. Various criteria were used to assess the quality of created schedules. Numerical results of the comparative research were presented for various criteria and rules of the priority

<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p><span>AdiTeknik </span><span>is one of the garages in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, engaged in repairing services industry tools. This garage recently has problems in attracting customers. Prior studies suggest that one of the things that affect the number of customers is customer satisfaction. After listening to complaints from several consumers, consumers said that they are less satisfied with the quality of the garage. This phenomenon become the trigger for us to investigate the customer satisfaction especially on the </span><span>AdiTeknik </span><span>garage. One method that can be used to help companies to improve the quality according to customer point of view is Quality Function Deployment (QFD). We find that there are twelve attributes of the desires and needs of consumers to improve the quality of garage service of </span><span>AdiTeknik. </span><span>Those are the quality of repair, cleanliness and neatness of the garage, complete facilities for customer, employee performance, repair results in accordance with demand, timeliness of completion, the ability to analyze problems, clarity fees and the completion time, warranty repair results, employee friendliness, ease of contacting a workshop, and a willingness to give feedback. </span></p></div></div></div>

We present an online algorithm for scheduling the charging of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in a Charging Station, aiming to optimize the overall quality of service through sum of weighted completion time minimization. Upon arrival of each EV, the algorithm generates a menu of service-price options. By letting the EV users pick their most preferable option, the algorithm offers guaranteed quality of service, achieves near optimal performance, and prevents the users from acting strategically.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the response rate and impact on quality of life of vinorelbine given as cycles of 30 mg/m2 weekly for 6 weeks to patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with histologically proven malignant pleural mesothelioma were enrolled (26 male patients and three female patients; median age, 58 years [range, 29 to 77 years]). Seventeen patients had epithelioid tumors, two had sarcomatoid tumors, and 10 had biphasic tumors. The International Mesothelioma Interest Group staging system was used: one patient had stage Ib disease, 10 had stage II disease, eight had stage III disease, and 10 had stage IV disease. Patients were treated with weekly injections of vinorelbine 30 mg/m2. A cycle consisted of six weekly injections. The new guidelines to evaluate the response to treatment in solid tumors were used. Responses were measured by spiral computed tomography scan. RESULTS: All twenty-nine patients had measurable disease and were assessed for response. There were seven partial responses (24% [95% confidence interval, 10% to 44%]), 16 patients had stable disease (55%), and six patients had disease progression on therapy (21%). The median number of vinorelbine injections was 12 (range, 2 to 30). Quality-of-life analyses showed a benefit for vinorelbine therapy. CONCLUSION: Vinorelbine shows promise in the palliation of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The relatively low toxicity of the drug suggests that trials of vinorelbine in combination with other agents should be feasible.

Trade-off problems concentrate on balancing the main parameters of a project as completion time, total cost and quality of activities. In this study, the problem of project time-cost-quality trade-off is formulated and solved from a new standpoint. For this purpose, completion time and crash cost of project are illustrated as fuzzy goals, also the dependency of implementing time of each activity and its execution-quality is described by a fuzzy number. The overall quality of the project execution is defined as the minimum execution-quality of the project activities that should be maximized. Based on some real assumptions, a three-objective programming problem associated with the time-cost-quality trade-off problem is formulated; then with the aim of identifying a fair and appropriate trade-off, the research problem is reformulated as a single objective linear programming by utilizing a fuzzy decision-making methodology. Generating a final preferred solution, rather than a set of Pareto optimal solutions, and having a reasonable interpretation are two most important advantages of the proposed approach. To explain the practical performance of the proposed models and approach, a time-cost-quality trade-off problem for a project with real data is solved and analyzed.

AbstractVariants of uncertain significance represent a massive challenge to medical genetics. Multiplexed functional assays, in which the functional effects of thousands of genomic variants are assessed simultaneously, are increasingly generating data that can be used as additional evidence for or against variant pathogenicity. Such assays have the potential to resolve variants of uncertain significance, thereby increasing the clinical utility of genomic testing. Existing standards from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG)/Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) and new guidelines from the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) establish the role of functional data in variant interpretation, but do not address the specific challenges or advantages of using functional data derived from multiplexed assays. Here, we build on these existing guidelines to provide recommendations to experimentalists for the production and reporting of multiplexed functional data and to clinicians for the evaluation and use of such data. By following these recommendations, experimentalists can produce transparent, complete, and well-validated datasets that are primed for clinical uptake. Our recommendations to clinicians and diagnostic labs on how to evaluate the quality of multiplexed functional datasets, and how different datasets could be incorporated into the ACMG/AMP variant-interpretation framework, will hopefully clarify whether and how such data should be used. The recommendations that we provide are designed to enhance the quality and utility of multiplexed functional data, and to promote their judicious use.

Cloud computing is provides resource allocation which facilitates the cloud resource provider responsible to the cloud consumers. The main objective of resource manager is to assign the dynamic resource to the task in the execution and measures response time, execution cost, resource utilization and system performance. The resource manager is optimizing the resource and measure the completion time for assign resource. The resource manager is also measure to execute the resource in the optimal way to complete the task in minimum completion time. The virtualization is techniques mandatory to allocate the dynamic resource depends on the users need. There are also green computing techniques involved for enhanced the no of server. The skewness is basically used to enhance the quality of service using the various parameters. The proposed algorithms are considered to allocate the cloud resource as per the users requirement. The advantage of proposed algorithm is to view the analysis of cpu utilization and also reduced the memory usage.
